Here is the thing. The disease of alcoholism is horrible. It is chronic, progressive, and fatal. Given that, of course any decent person favors any method that alleviates its symptoms. The enigmatic aspect of the disease is its profound spiritual component. If you like, call it an existential component. Such maladies resist medical treatment, to this day. So, any type of treatment that addresses the spiritual or existential malady works. Find one and work it if you are an alcoholic.
AA is a dangerous cult for douchebags. They don't care whether you stop drinking or not. They just want to control your mind. Stay away. Going to AA is worse than doing nothing at all. And it is full of perverts hitting on any young woman who walks through the doors of a 'meeting'. Steer clear of these brainwashed losers!!
I've heard Father Joe identify himself as an alcoholic....and I'm happy to listen to him and take direction from him as another alcoholic. He may wear a collar and I respect that but I don't think he wears it to offend people...that's just his job...it's his way of life but I don't think he preaches at anyone...he just tells you how he did it, how he is staying sober....I want what he's got!
I could be wrong, and Ive never been a member of AA, but I didn't hear him say he had a problem.
So what qualifies him to interpret steps of a program that is proposed to be by alcoholics for alcoholics. Or is it that collar, that expresses some sort of authority.
Would you trust a 20 year heart surgeon to perform your bypass, or someone who just read about it in a book?
@gmcmudder1 ...to answer your question, I would have to explain it using the analogy: the Model T FORD paved the way for other manufacturers such as GMC--they would simply not exist if it were not for Ford's origins. i.e. just like AA's 12 commandments (aka 12 steps) --the only thing separating the two 'religions' are the 2 steps that AA added on to the original 10 commandments of the Catholic Church.
@gmcmudder1 To respect AA traditions he wont identify himself as a member of AA but he does identify himself as a recovering alcoholic in other videos.
Look at our strengths, joys and pleasures in life. Look at the good things we have done in life and be proud of our strengths. Focus on these things and make an effort to step forward positively to a better life for our self and those dear to us.
Step 3
Seek help to understand your anger, your moods and psychological health. If a positive approach to life, appreciation of love and feelings of joy are too hard to find, seek professional help to understand why this is so.
Admit that we can not control our drinking. If we have any alcohol at all, we can not control our behaviour and it has a negative affect on our life. We must not have another drink.
IMHO..If AA gets you and keeps you sober...GREAT. If you "get it" in Rational Recovery...GREAT. If you "get it" in Celebrate Recovery...GREAT. Do whichever ever one works for YOU. If watching baseball does it...then break out the TIVO! When you are working your program, whichever one it is, if it aint broke then don't fix it. If it IS broken...then do something ELSE. No matter what group you follow...make sure that you are actually DOING the program of choice, NOT just lip service! It wont work!
Admitting you have a problem is completely different from being "powerless" over it.
It's just an excuse to relapse. "I'm powerless so it's not my fault I got drunk and beat my wife and killed somebody with my car".
This AA shit is so pathetic. It's a recipe for relapse.
Disease? Cancer is a disease, putting a bottle to your lips and drinking from it is a choice not a disease. You can choose to stop drinking, you can't "choose" to not have cancer.
Some of you anti AA folk display a very deep misunderstanding of the fellowship...or a willingness to spread disinformation. But then again...that is the way with most conspiracy theorists.
If you have the misfortune of being forced into treatment, these father martin vids are a form of torture. Not to mention and example of forced christianity on people.
One year, four months. I'm living a life I never thought imaginable for me, all due to the 12 steps and AA. If you want to call it a cult, knock yourselves out. But it works miracles for people suffering emotional, physical and spiritual anguish that few outside of addiction ever experience.
@vikes51349 God bless you for being honest about it man. I know it's been 2 months but I hope you've found your way to the rooms by now. Just know that I started out pissed off at anything and everything and not willing to even say the "G" word, but here I am 15 months later and my life has fallen back in place. I fuckin' love it man.
@WelshiesCousin It works "miracles" for people who won't take responsibility for their own lives and actions. It's a lot easier to let someone else(your sponsor) make the choices for you.
And here I thought AA was a cult.
Silly me.
They might not take all your money, but they will take your time and individuality.
@kirst439 How exactly does it 'work'? How exactly does doing 12 cult practices and reading a rubbish book written by a deluded, brain-damaged wack-job (the so-called big book) cause people to stop drinking? I think that the causation works the other way, wanting to stop drinking causes people to go to AA, where they get brainwashed into believing that AA is keeping them sober, and that they will surely relapse if they ever dare to leave the AA cult.
Sober since 12.05.06 . Not only am I free from alcohol & drugs, but I am free to have a life that I never thought possible. I tried rehabs, churches and everything in between, but the 12 steps made it simple to practice everyday and it works for me.
Don't listen to the haters. The results speak for themselves. These creeps that hang around and bad mouth such a giving institution as AA are sick in their souls and want to spread it to anyone they can. AA is NOT the only way, but it DOES work.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
AA is a religious cult with its 12 commandments written by the right wing wacko Oxford Group made more redundant via megalomaniac Bill Wilson. AA cult meetings are nothing but a waste of time, BS testimonials for god Bill Wilson, as you understand him, a very sick cult peddling guru.
Anger is one of the many symptoms of a untreated alcoholic, self pity is the second most common. AA is not for everyone, however it works if you have a drinking problem and want to change your life.
In AA you're NOT ALLOWED to be angry at the blatant hypocrisy of the AA cult, that's why they say angry is your enemy or a "luxury afforded NORMIES!, Of course AA wants power over the powerless, very obvious cult tactic from AA.
Who says you're NOT ALLOWED to be angry AT ANYTHING in AA? As a matter of fact, no AA member can ever tell another member what to do, or how to feel ever. The first time I got angry another member leaned over and said: "Welcome, you've now joined us." Anger, guilt, shame, remorse, fear are all stepping stones to crossed in recovery. Come on back, we'll be here when you are ready to come back and only when you are ready. Feel whatever you need to feel at the time and be whomever you are.
When did the Catholic Church jump on the AA bandwagon? Bill W. and Dr. Bob's 12-step program was based on the Oxford Group. Back then, Catholics were forbidden from attending Oxford Group meetings (under threat of excommunication)
As soon as someone says the truth about recruitment into the cult, out come the culties and their PERSONAL attacks. They Never argue the facts about the cult, they just personally attack anyone who dares to question the cult.
Who is attacking? If it helps people stay clean, whats the big deal? Cults do mind control. The only requirement for membership in AA is the desire to stop drinking. What is so wrong with that?
Anyone who might think that AA is a cult has never been to an AA fellowship business meeting. It's like a herd of cats all trying to go in opposite directions and arguing about which way to go. Nobody, and I mean nobody in AA every agrees 100% with one another and I love that. It's the most organized disorder on the planet and still it works just fine. AA is no more a cult than the local tavern on a Saturday night is a cult and we hung out there too.
