@1goldbaby lol.. we called them the Honey Combs when I was growing up.. What the heck is a honey cone? Sorry but "the honey cones" is a dumb name.. just sayin'
@whoislilboyfresh both were artists for the same record group, one on invictus, the other on hot wax. Probably the reason the two artists sound so much alike. But this one went to Number 1 for the Honey Cone.
Didn't we miss a trick in the UK? Just love the Honey Cone, Holland-Dozier-Holland's alternative 'Supremes' in the early 1970s. SOUL divas with attitude.
@infinera06 ..... That's what makes it so good....it sounds tinny like a pocket radio. If it sounded like music today with full stereo sound etc, there would be something missing.
I like this song. Is it just me or does this seem to be one of those rare transition songs where you hear old Mowtown sound blending with what becomes disco?
she has such range and control...wow..and you can tell she is just *loving* this song as she sings it..Im so glad I was teenager in the 70's instead if now..the 70's were one long party with awesome music as the soundtrack...
These are some sophisticated, talented, beautiful and classy ladies.
And this is some sophisticated, classy music: funky, syncopated and sly. It's so funky, makes you feel like skipping on air. Look out! Too much. Just too much. Ain't nothin' today can hold a candle to this old soul music. Nothing. These were some sophisticated no-bullshit musicians, singers, arrangers, and producers. They were layin' it down, and ain't nobody can pick it up.
Russell Simmons is one the main reasons why music is so F--k -up today. He's the father / pioneer of hip hop / gangster music. Sorry Russell, the facts speak for themselves. Back in the day, young women were referred to as "Ladies" and now, they love it when you refer to them as "Hey ho' " or bitc-.
@shadesmagazine I couldn't agree with you more however i wouldn't say Russell was alone in the degradation of our people never the less our women the music business is run by Jews Rick Ruben was the true leader of defjam.there were plenty of white owned blacksploitation movies in the 70s the Mack superfly shaft box office smashes.somebodys mama got slapped in every one of those long before gangsta rap came along .
@shadesmagazine i will say that tingokuman sums it up as well as i really care to right now...there were many before, during and since that may have been much more influential in a negative regard than russell simmons...honestly, im 40-something yrs old now....the bigger 'message' i remember from russell or def jam to expand...beastie boys and their alcoholic rhymes...stands out more than most everything except some of llcoolj's early stuff. russ can only be held accountable for def jam stuff
@gdub520 I see you have one of my favorite player's saved as a favorite: William (Bootsy) Collins. I just happen to be listening to his greatest hits cd as we speak. I play it everyday. I'm in my mid 50's. See, "This is some good music that influence a generation of funk-a-teers (like myself) that wasn't degrading or calling women B's or h's in their lyrics". The hip-hop community should learn from guys like "BOOTSY."
@undataka2000 ....Well Undataka, I don't mind doing the research but................."On what?" I'm ole school youngblood, I don't know what this "IMAO" means. Please speak it to me in english. Your language gives your age away. Chances are wherever research you're referring to, I've lived it or living through it (from experience) to be able to state my opinion or facts.
@shadesmagazine no its fucking newskool music its fucking retarded listen 2 old skool hiphop nas 2pac .. etc ikuld go 4 days :) nd no fuck yu idont care if yu cant understand how ispell not in skool fuck face :) - my opinion like it or not
@Esai1289 See what I mean. "You're ignorant junior." "THAT A FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!" Like it are not. See what happens when you skip english class and quit school early. I could only read the last 5 words in your sentence. I hope you never run for President. You can't speak or write english.
@shadesmagazine It more than Russell Simmons its people not wanting to take a stand for themselves. I am a you woman and if some body decides to call me ho or bitc- they better sleep with one eye open.
@shadesmagazine Once upon a time, black music involved (1) professional songwriters, (2) professional musicians, (3) experienced record producers, (4) professional singers, (5) artist and repetoire professionals, and (5) professional choreographers. That's why people still listen to Motown, Memphis and Philly, etc. While there are talented performers in hip hop, and there will always be talent coming out of the black community, things are very different now professionally . . . .
@soulgriot As for the bitc# and ho references, go back and listen to Jelly Roll Morton. Trust me, it's in there! The difference is that the songs with so-called smutty references were not presented as acceptable for general audiences.
@shadesmagazine I don't thing anything has changed, except the the levels of sexism in all eras. Music evolves, the objectification of women unfortunately has not.
Honey Cone were some funky-ass sistas with some great vocals and tunes. R&B vocal groups are non-existent these days. The "Boy Band" era killed the credibility of it unfairly enough. Now any time someone puts together a vocal group it has to be a freaking pre-packaged group like N Sync or Spice Girls where members audition.
They are some sexy ass females...and they can SING.
Although I was only 3 back then (next week I turn 44)...what I miss now are songs that had positive messages, songs that made you feel good and songs that speak from the heart.
@gofyerself It should... The group was on the Hot Wax label... which was started by Holland-Dozier-Holland after they left Motown. HDH wrote many of Motown's classic hits prior to leaving the label.
The Honey Combs and Freida Payne sound similair. I love them both... these were the good old days... when you knew good music was bring made and played! Thanks for sharing revup67!
Here's another act who pretended to be The Supremes. At any rate, why don't women fight other women for their men? If boys have to fight for their girls, in a relationship, it should be a two way street, It's all about Chivalry, girls; Don't get into his face, get into hers.
Want Ads was written by General Norman Johnson, who also wrote Stick Up for the Honey Cones. Johnson was very well known as the lead singer for The Chairmen of the Board, whose big hit " Give Me Just a Little More Time", features one the all time great soul/r&b vocals.
Fantastic song: the lyrics tell a story. Ace arrangement and playing by the band w 16 yr old Ray Parker Jr on guitar. Tremendous lead vocal by Edna Wright and perfect backup backup singing by Carolyn Willis and Shellie Clark. Funky soul music at it finest.
Don't blame the group for lip synching. It was the standard back then for most shows like this (Soul Train, American Bandstand, etc.).
these young "sisstars" are not british born blacks.... not to be confussed with brittons .... they are africans orn in the america.... today you call them african american..... second this song was released in 71 just a little for real black soul music loves ...... ya know the peole the light up the world.
MY MOM WORE HOT PANTS IN 1971!! HATE TO SEE THIS BUT GALS JUST DO NOT DRESS LIKE THIS..MY AUNT SAID THAT YEARS AGO PEOPLE PUT ALOT MORE EFFORT IN THEIR DRESS!! NOT LIKE TODAY...
I was trying to sample this song unsuccessfully last week and I see today that Girl Talk used it for a beat. fuuuuuuuuuuck. I hope he doesn't know who Betty Everett is.
Dont know how anyone can be confused with 60s 'Honeycombs', who were a white British band with a female drummer. This band were on Holland-Dozier-Holland's Hot-Wax label [to us Brits] & excelled in the Northern Soul clubs. I think they were Shellie Clark,, Edna Wright & Carolyn Willis & had Lps called 'Sweet Replies' [which this track came from], 'Take Me With You', Soulful Tapestry' & 'Love, Peace & Soul' during their run on Hot-Wax/Invictus. Also Sharon Cash joined them towards the end of HDH.
Christ i grew up with this as well as you OLD people(46).Just because you can't get into some of today's music, you forget about a lot of the CRAP that came out at the same time. Just because you fondly remember this airbrushed memory,no need to diss some of todays stars, that will also be remembered fondly thru hazy shade of yesterday by this generation. Man, did everyone here just get OLD and LAME
@Clariccy Dear Clar., OLD means unstylish - not in accord with or not following current fashion; "unfashionable"; "an unfasionalbe type of any thing". . OLD has nothing, necessarily, to do with the age of any person. A ten year old with a reel-to-reel tape recorder or a dead sea scroll, could be OLD whereas a ninety-years of age person, with a bright mind (example Prince Phillip) could easily be called not OLD. . Cheers. from, del-boy.

????????????????? .

This song features a then teen-aged Ray Parker Jr. on rhythm guitar. . . he was a prolific session musician long before "Ghostbusters."
