Really dependent upon the type of shoulder joint you have. I don't think they are inherently bad. Some people have no problem at all with them...others get major grief. I don't think it takes a rocket surgeon to realise that if it hurts...don't do it...if if doesn't then I guess you're fine.
Do you additionally do any direct external or internal rotation or is that superfluous?
