Hmmm this is interesting. I tried that in 1.8.1, modded with CB, IC, RP. It not only works like a charm, but if do the trick with a lava bucket, and then put the lava bucket in the BC engine, you'll never have to replace it again. I'll assume it would do the same with a regular furnace.
