Marley, flat-coated retriever

Almost certain she's a border collie golden retriever mix. I've been researching genetics on my dog Bensen, who's her double. What I've discovered is that the black in border collies is dominant, as is the long hair. If she were a mix with a lab, she'd be short haired.

Also, into all this conjecture you have to figure the odds. There are a lot of labs, goldens, and borders out there, but not that many flat coats.

@Wodeshed Thanks for the info! She looks a bit different now and has so many physical qualities of an Irish Setter (not the color, of course) so it's hard to tell. I appreciate you sharing what you've found!

My flat coat is 5 years old (6 next May) and he's still acts like a bloody pup. Not that anyone in the family minds, he's very funny. =] He's a bit fat though because he has hip dysplacia. =< Flat coats are prettttyy awesome.

wat was her weight when she was 5 or 6 month old? i have a flattie hu jst turned 6 months old and i wonder what a normal weight should be. coz my flattie seemed to be small, he weighs 40 @ 5months. what do u think?

Marley looks EXACTLY like my Charlie who is a shelter doggie as well. He is so precious to me. I don't think he's a pure flat coat either, but i'm not sure what else he would be. Marley and Charlie need to get married. :D

Yup, Marley is from a shelter too - they called her a flat coat but we're thinking more of a setter something else mix. She's about 45 lbs. and very sweet and timid. Gotta love those mutt babies :)

We have a black Flattie, now 10 years old, we had a liver colored one, but an ex- police attack-dog killed him ... The ex-policedog´s owners don´t give a rats as what happened to our sweetheart... We could sue them but for what... They´re a poor trashy dutch family called Miranda and Dion Evers, from the citty of Deventer-Holland and even if we got money from hem ....That doesn´t bring our sweetheart Marron back. I believe in karma... You know what I mean!

Aww I'm so sorry to hear about your liver dog :( some people just couldn't care less, it's awful, I think you should still sue so it doesn't happen to another innocent dog

Flatcoats are the best ever! Our Flattie is naughty as well, but so sweet! She would never harm anyone. Thanks for this video! We just adopted a dog, and he looks EXACTLY like your dog. They told us he was a flat-coated/ retriever mix, but studying the breed I think he's a fullbreed.He behaves like one, his body is exactly like Marley's, even the white on his chest and his tail looks the same! So is Marley 100% flat-coated? Thanks for any information.:)

My parents have a mix-breed dog that looks EXACTLY like a flat coat, even though neither his mum or dad was one. (One of them was an Irish Setter so close enough, I suppose...) Anyway, I love watching flat coat vids on YouTube when I'm missing "our" doggie like crazy, not having seen him for a while. He not only looks like a flat but behaves like one, too: very playful, even at the ripe old age of eleven, lol. And very very affectionate. We dread the day he will be no more...

This dog has a wavy coat. All flat-coats and goldens decend from black wavy-coated retrievers that looked like this!

Flat-coats are so similar to the working-type golden retriever. Working-type goldens have that setter/retriever combo temperament that I so love. The flat-coats I've met have that temperament, too. I've done some work on wavy-coat and flat-coat history.

I have a Flat Coat 2 years old. Its a very active dog..I feel her attention span is much shorter than Golden and Labradors. Was it the same with you? Are Flat Coats more difficult to train than Golder and Labradors?

I had working type goldens and have been around working type labs. When they are young, like under 3 or 4, they really are much active and easily distrcted. Working type retrievers, which all fatties are, tend to have really short attention spans. My guess is that most of the goldens and labs you've been around are show-types, which are much calmer. I had a golden retriever that had really strong flat-coat features (she looked just like one except for the color).

All working type retrievers are like this when they're young. Most performance bred goldens and labs are like that, too. They are all generally really lightly built like the flat-coat. The three breeds were interbred for about 30 years. And when they were registered, you registered the puppies by their color and coat length. Goldens were a color variety of flat-coat for many years, like a yellow lab. Some goldens are really flat-coatlike, especially from working lines.
