Imagine...it's only the beginning of this technology. This reminds me of the movie "Paycheck", which was only fiction. But we're on our way there. Fascinating!
Im not trying to be a know-it-all, but a the surface of a spining mirror is flat. Doesnt this mean that this does not produce a 3d image, but a 2d image that can be viewed from 360° without changing the image? As that is a big diference.
@JustSomeRandomNewb You're probably right but it might be a law of inifinites/halves (limits in calculus) here. Best example to explain is if a frog has to go 100 yds but with every hop he can only jump half the distance, will he get there? The answer is no because halving is infinite and will never reach 0. So with the mirrors (i'm guessing here) is that they spin so fast and there's so many of them that it seems like a true rounded image. 3d modeling uses polygons in the same way forvideogames
@JustSomeRandomNew movie "3D" is where it pops out at you. REAL 3-D, 3 dimensional, means the object has 3 dimensions. it has a front a back and a side. example, old school mario is 2D because the images were front and back nothing else. newer games are 3D because (even though its on a screen) the objects in them have a full 360 degree image. so basically point is, it has 3 dimensions, they have essentially created a 3-D image, this just isn't a TRUE SCI-FI-esque hologram.
@captrob1516 correcting myself on the dimensions, a better description would be a "front and back" a "top and bottom" and a "side and side" make up 3 dimensions, length width and depth essentially
@captrob1516 I am studying physics, i know my dimensions ;) but still, i thought that all they did was display a 2d regular image on a rotating mirror, so you could view it from every side of the 'display' i only now notice that as the miror turns a certian amount, the image will be changed acordingly.
Definitely what we futurists are looking for. Two things instantly come to mind when seeing technology that can really produce 3D holograms. The first is that this should be used for video games. The second is that maybe they could alter the brightness and contrast of the projector or some of the images to make it look less bright and more realistic.
It'd be cool if they could use SONAR to capture a 3D image from a live feed and reproduce it using light with the mirror. Then we'd be one step closer towards live 3D telecommunication. Of course, one issue would be tracking the image, because what would be the point of being able to move around to see the 3D effect if, when moving, you moved out of the field of SONAR that was sending your 3D image to your recipient? Still... this is an incredible breakthrough.
@kyleain he just wants us all to listen to his gay techno trance. i like electronic music - but that was shit, look up breeze n styles real world remix
It's a FANTASTIC concept but it'll be a while until the technology reaches the consumer.
Your typical HD display is either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 and they both have bandwidth requirements measured in megs-per-second for good image quality.
Now try to imagine a 1920x1920x1080 display. That's 3,981,312,000 cubic pixels and the bandwidth needed for high quality volumetric displays would instantly rise from megs-per-second to gigs-per-second.
For static 3D objects an LCD might work if its viewing angle is restricted from almost 180 to only a view degrees. In order to achieve a 360 degrees experience there must be shown a different perspective to at least every 10 degrees. Therefore the LCD must be build in a way that the pixels can be seen in an angle of 10 degrees only. As the LCD rotates, the image must switch in perspective 36 times per turn (every 10 degrees during the rotation) .
Limiting factor will be the frequency of the LCD. In order to get a calm image there must be at least 50 Hz for every single perspective: 36*50 = 1800 display updates per second. Even todays fastest LCDs aren't fast enough :-(
Humans creating a 3d holographic world in the 3d holographic world there were themselves created in. Thats astounding. If thats not affirmation of who we really are then I do not know what is.
Amazing video regardless of the above comment from me. Thanks.
It is indeed a hologram, but it isn't projecting it across the room into thing air making a 3d model like in Star Wars, which in theory would need something to block the light anyway. This is breakthrough, though.
ok...From What I see, there is a mirror and it spins too fast in a 360 degree and I see the blue light and 2d image, thus, creating a hologram?!!!.....MAn.....awesome.....
It is explained in a very clear and simple way on the video... if you can't understand even then maybe it is because your brain isn't equipped or prepared to understand it, but don't worry you are not alone, the vast majority of people do not understand the vast majority of things happening around them, no matter how simply it is put to them...
well, when you're in a dark place and spin round a burning cigarette, you won't see the tip of the cigarette, just a circle. Now, imagine that you're holding 3 of them, side by side and they shouldn't be of same length. When you'll spin them, you'll see something like a bracelet. This technology works in the same manner, like spinning thousands of tiny cigarettes very very fast
The mirror is slanted so that it covers a wide area from top to bottom and front to back. When it spins around, any given point in the space it's spinning around in can reflect the blue laser. The blue laser is very carefully timed to the spinning of the mirror so that the computer always knows exactly when to fire the laser and at what angle to point it inorder to hit a particular point in space. The computer needs to know where the camera is so it'll look right. It only works for the camera :(
Amazing stuff, but I think it just childs play compared to alien technology lol. We all live in a holographic Universe, now we making our own holograms crazy irony hahahaha.
What is certain is that we all live in the Universe. Every single idea about what the Universe really is, however, is speculative, non-certain. What you postulate could be a possible hypothesis, but that doesn't mean it is at all probable.
On alien tech: All human feats seem insignificant in contrast to non-proven or imaginary godlike adversaries. In the minds of their believers, God, sci-fi, aliens and rainbow deers have the indisputably best Ipod technology.
In case you didn't notice, I was pointing out how ridiculous the whole idea is on comparing human technological progress to some imaginary adversary, as suggested by user sistermiller.
Advance this and mix it with teleportation and wallaa a holadeck!! AI is HERE and we should merge with the silicon...Nice work! we are cutting edge technology!!!!
nifty...ok. would like color images also. keep working on it. could be really awesome later. not that its not cool now. just not perfected is all. keeep upp thhe wooorkkk.
I understand, that's why I said that the exposure is a good thing. And, just to not cause any misunderstanding, this video is the best example of a holographic display I've seen on Youtube.
In regards to the interactive displays: The thware tv website is a perfect example. So much potential, yet the first consumer product we see is an interactive coffee table?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it may be the poster has never taken a science or math class in his life. It's just clever programming, a projector, and a spinning mirror...NOT MAGIC
or he might just be referencing the fact that magicians and illusionists have been using mirrors for hundreds of years and this isn't such a great leap.
and you were obviously to eager to post your little "i'm more inteligent than you post".. who knows eh.
I am a computer scientist, and I assure you I am both knowledgeable in science and math.
In no way did I mean for the Arthur C. Clarke quote to imply that this specific technology employs magic in order to work. For me to think that would be ridiculous and ignorant with my current knowledge. However, if we were to show these amazing tools to other civilizations, the product of our accelerating technological progress could well be seen as nothing short but magic.
In a sense, the idea that man lives in space, that an entire family can fly across the globe, that we can instantly communicate with each other, that you can download knowledge, capture time, play music from a box, entangle particles, summon fire and water at will, revive the dead, cool and cook things in seconds, slow aging, control machines with the mind, could be seen by an ignorant mind as divine or magic.
I don't mean ignorant as an insult, but as an impediment, someone who simply does not have the knowledge or capacity to understand the inner workings of a given technology or process.
With the current accelerating pace of technological progress and the coming introduction of intelligent automation into the various facets of human technological development, the emergence of self-improving AI, will initiate a wave of progress that will seems nothing short of magic, to non-augmented intelligence.
This coming revolution might only be fantasy though if we can not wrap our heads around the methods required to deal with such a wealth of information.
it cant change fast if you go on there website it says it on there website it takes 5 minutes to change a imge...it has 15 fps and can move the image but cant change the background or image for 5 minutes...
didnt you watch the man running on this vid, or the cubes rotating? those images changed... or did you not watch this at all and just post a comment for fun?
thanks, i am not sure to have been understood,I am french. This is the time called "horizontal and vertical parallax using vertical tracked camera". Does it seem that the picture at this time moves only with camera, and that another observer could not see anything. First I thought everybody was able to see it from a circle around, at anytime, I thought that only the mirror was tracked and coordinated with the projector, but in the second example it's another purpose, I understand better (I hope).
The part of the video titled 'interactive content manipulation' shows how the operator can orient the image for eye to eye contact. Orienting the image through 90 degrees vertically , or 'yawing' shows how you can look at the top of the head which is the same as looking directly down.
I hope my explanation is helpful. I will try to translate this message into French in my next message.
You are very welcome ;-) If it wasn't for you posting this video I would probably not even been aware of this amazing technology - so thanks to you too.
Thanks for posting this. I think it would be difficult to underestimate the significance in this development. I understand the argument that this is not 'star-wars' enough, but we just don't know enough about how light works to do that yet. The quantum leap is that conventional holograms are one-off images stored in a substrate so you can put one in your shopping bag. This system needs no substrate and the data is computer generated on-demand. The mirror is acting as a conduit.
Aye, as an imaginative author and populariser of science, I know of no other equal other than Carl. We will remember you, old friend. Therein lies your immortality.
I conceed that according to conventional ideas of what a hologram is, this display is a hologram. In my limited understanding of the science behind holograms, I've come to expect a "Hologram" to be light manipulated to project a 3d image into the void of space (like those seen in sci-fi movies). Maybe my expectation is fictional. Awsome hologram.
Consider the example here of the wireframe human head. In most holographic projections you would see the wireframe of the opposite side of the object in addition to those surfaces that normally intersect your vision in your day-to-day experiences. With this technique however you only see the surfaces facing you. This is a huge advantage in visual data representation.
Additionally, this can be reprogrammed to show normally hidden surfaces, so it's quite versatile.
Compared to other holographic displays this has the advantage of only displaying the surfaces that normally intersect the observers vision. Other holographic displays that also show the surfaces which the observer normally don't see can be confusing and unpleasant.
True holographic displays exhibit that problem, which is why I consider that for the time being this display is superior for the purpose of visual representation of information. I do not see that changing any time in the near future.
K, I think I may be the only person thinks this is NOT a hologram. First of all a hologram is a 3D projection which has no solid surface. Well, seems to me, this is nothing but an illusion of a hologram generated by an extremely fast spinning disk and the computer math to boot which determines which angle is projected on to the mirror. Thus giving the illusion of a hologram. Try putting you hand in there and touching it. Obviously that defeats the purpus. But again. this is not a hologram.
Putting your hand in there and touching is not what makes a hologram a hologram. You wouldn't want to try putting your hand in the Japanese version of the plasma volumetric display, now would you?
Listen, in almost all sci-fi, a hologram is something you can pass your hand threw. However, I conceed it is not what makes a hologram a hologram. But this invention is either re-inventing convential ideas about what a hologram could be, or it is an attempt a duplicating the aw we've come to admire in sci-fi movies. The latter which I believe to be true. Purhaps time will prove the former true with a population ready to except it's new inception. Whatever, I don't care, but it's no hologram
I'll be sure to let my high-tech watch know that it's not a high-tech watch because Science Fiction dictates all high-tech watches have a microphone and a speaker.
Great! Could you create a camera circle in another city and send the video signals to this 3D display so one could have a holographic video telephone?
very cool-thanks or keeping us informed. love the holographic concepts. remember that little holo ghost woman on some tunnel ride at disneyland around 20 years ago. have been fascinated ever since. and the holo r2d2 had of princess leah in star wars. also, am reading, "the holographic universe" by michael talbot. amazing stuff in there. definitely, in some way, this kind of science will have a lot to do with our future.
Sometimes a little too eager, and they end up overhyping everything.. but it's a good thing to expose any kinda technology to the public so there'll me faster progress..
I'm not sure who I was replying to.. but "They" are the researchers, people who come up with these ideas.. just like the interface-free touch screen.. What do they do with it? interactive coffee table....
Sometimes a technology arrives and its potential is not immediately clear. It might take a generation worth of human creativity to explore the potential benefits of an invention. I.e: The Binary Numeral System
As we inherit inventions and ideas, we can creatively apply and evolve them by seeing them with brand new eyes.
You mentioned the interface-free touch screen. I invite you to visit Thoughtware (dot) TV and go to top rated section. Check out Office Labs and you'll see.
Poltergeists of the scientific mind. Are we the same thing? Just a bit more compacted? Denser? If I may. Not being sarcastic. What was the stuff of psuedo-science is now the Word of Truth.
The future is what we make of it. There'll always be people trying to impose world views upon us. This has been so since civilization began, up to this day. We don't need a theoretical conspiracies to have people trying to impose their idea of "order" on our idea of the "world".
As humanity attempts to achieve new levels of organization and knowledge awareness, we will have to overcome our fears and paranoias, and start working towards a better, ordered world, where life's liberty remains and only change for the better.
good point! you get a smily for that!"yay!" :) see. now here is the problem when the elite think they contorl everything and they use this technology for evil means. look at "project blue beam" it may have hit one of your skies alreadly and WILL hit all of our skies SOON! that is a problem agreed? when power is abused. and people and creatures suffer and die as a result. :( have a nice day and namaste :)
Hi. I read the Wikipedia Article. I think, in truth, the goal is pretty irrelevant. People don't need technology to do this.
Soooo many groups since civilization have come and gone, trying to convince themselves and others to organize in order to talk about supposed apparitions of Deities, such as Greek and Roman mythological creatures and the arrivals of messiahs. They've been able to move the masses without any evidence whatsoever.
I mean...lets think about this. We have an Artificial Intelligence roaming in mars.
If a group of religious fanatics rich-folks want to fulfill their hopes of experiencing a kingdom come light show, by using technology to make some cheap light show to abuse minds, it is indeed truly sad, but we can make their efforts useless by educating people and promoting critical thought, teaching people the value of reevaluating every now and then their long held ideas and beliefs
yeah. because look at the structure of a prymarid and place us "average folk" at the bottom. and place the elite at the top. if we are suppoting them what if we i dunno stop doing what we are doing right now?! stop shopping stop watching tv. and started thinking, we outnumber them! think about it. it is your god-given right! SO THINK!
hm...I just don't buy the elite conspiracy sorry :)
I do agree that there are "big interests" within elite societies, companies and groups and that I think its completely wrong when those interests care not for those negatively affected, specially when health and public well being is involved.
it is not a "conspiracy" it is a reality. i agree some aspects of it are a little crazy. but agree with me on this a group of "rich people who think they control the world and us (normals)" and there is tooo much evidence to prove it otherwise. if not well bummer for you :( if you want i guess you could think what you want then. well see you later then bye. :( have a nice day peace and namaste! :)
Wanting control of others is not a matter of being rich or poor, it is not limited to pyramids of social status, nor goverments or the private industry. It is not limited to race, or nationality.
It is a matter of indifference and specifically ignorance.
true. but again that is what the anti-wno movenemt is all about! and soon the u.s. govt. will strike first and most likly blmae it on the internet, and us the "terroists" and we will be taken away drugged and killed. but you are right! peace and namaste. :)
As you see your world so you act, and as you act, so it'll become.
I rather free from those ideas, specifically that "us vs them" mentality. I suggest you do the same, trust me, otherwise, those ideas will consume you.
yep. well when nibiru hits us and it will the mayans were close but off by 4years poor mayans :( something must be acceralatering its movement. but i dont know what. oh and it should come and pass us on dec.12, 2008! if you have a telescope it should be next to the moon given my friend who told me about the new information. :)
yeah i agree. and well it is not that hard. all it takes is #1 the most important part "ahem" ummmm. a crazy thing i call thinking with your brain! say what!? :0 #2 question authority and stand up for the betterment of all living things peace love happines ect. see where i am getting at?
The answer is in part to create or promote a culture of educated consuming, and to collectively put pressure on people and companies that don't do whats right. That there are people economically superior to us isn't whats wrong. Its how wealth is put to use (or lack of positive use) that worries me
very nice! i dont see this as being as popular as multi touch is going to be, but it's a huge step in the right direction none the less. final word; astounding.

On the Universe:
What is certain is that we all live in the Universe. Every single idea about what the Universe really is, however, is speculative, non-certain. What you postulate could be a possible hypothesis, but that doesn't mean it is at all probable.
On alien tech: All human feats seem insignificant in contrast to non-proven or imaginary godlike adversaries. In the minds of their believers, God, sci-fi, aliens and rainbow deers have the indisputably best Ipod technology.

quidproquo2004,
I am a computer scientist, and I assure you I am both knowledgeable in science and math.
In no way did I mean for the Arthur C. Clarke quote to imply that this specific technology employs magic in order to work. For me to think that would be ridiculous and ignorant with my current knowledge. However, if we were to show these amazing tools to other civilizations, the product of our accelerating technological progress could well be seen as nothing short but magic.
thoughtwaretv 3 years ago 7
In a sense, the idea that man lives in space, that an entire family can fly across the globe, that we can instantly communicate with each other, that you can download knowledge, capture time, play music from a box, entangle particles, summon fire and water at will, revive the dead, cool and cook things in seconds, slow aging, control machines with the mind, could be seen by an ignorant mind as divine or magic.
thoughtwaretv 3 years ago 3
I don't mean ignorant as an insult, but as an impediment, someone who simply does not have the knowledge or capacity to understand the inner workings of a given technology or process.
With the current accelerating pace of technological progress and the coming introduction of intelligent automation into the various facets of human technological development, the emergence of self-improving AI, will initiate a wave of progress that will seems nothing short of magic, to non-augmented intelligence.

it's very smart, I understood the principle, but how does it work when you look over??????????????????
kalish86 3 years ago
As the projector is located directly above the rotating mirror assembly you cannot look directly down at the image as your head would be in the way.
ClanRooster 3 years ago
thanks, i am not sure to have been understood,I am french. This is the time called "horizontal and vertical parallax using vertical tracked camera". Does it seem that the picture at this time moves only with camera, and that another observer could not see anything. First I thought everybody was able to see it from a circle around, at anytime, I thought that only the mirror was tracked and coordinated with the projector, but in the second example it's another purpose, I understand better (I hope).
kalish86 3 years ago
The part of the video titled 'interactive content manipulation' shows how the operator can orient the image for eye to eye contact. Orienting the image through 90 degrees vertically , or 'yawing' shows how you can look at the top of the head which is the same as looking directly down.
I hope my explanation is helpful. I will try to translate this message into French in my next message.
ClanRooster 3 years ago

You are very welcome ;-) If it wasn't for you posting this video I would probably not even been aware of this amazing technology - so thanks to you too.
ClanRooster 3 years ago
Thanks for posting this. I think it would be difficult to underestimate the significance in this development. I understand the argument that this is not 'star-wars' enough, but we just don't know enough about how light works to do that yet. The quantum leap is that conventional holograms are one-off images stored in a substrate so you can put one in your shopping bag. This system needs no substrate and the data is computer generated on-demand. The mirror is acting as a conduit.

That's great Seplrm. :)
I enjoyed your comments, they made me think.
You would be more than welcome at thoughtware dot TV
thoughtwaretv 3 years ago
Consider the example here of the wireframe human head. In most holographic projections you would see the wireframe of the opposite side of the object in addition to those surfaces that normally intersect your vision in your day-to-day experiences. With this technique however you only see the surfaces facing you. This is a huge advantage in visual data representation.
Additionally, this can be reprogrammed to show normally hidden surfaces, so it's quite versatile.
davea0511 3 years ago
agreed!
thoughtwaretv 3 years ago
Compared to other holographic displays this has the advantage of only displaying the surfaces that normally intersect the observers vision. Other holographic displays that also show the surfaces which the observer normally don't see can be confusing and unpleasant.
True holographic displays exhibit that problem, which is why I consider that for the time being this display is superior for the purpose of visual representation of information. I do not see that changing any time in the near future.
davea0511 3 years ago
K, I think I may be the only person thinks this is NOT a hologram. First of all a hologram is a 3D projection which has no solid surface. Well, seems to me, this is nothing but an illusion of a hologram generated by an extremely fast spinning disk and the computer math to boot which determines which angle is projected on to the mirror. Thus giving the illusion of a hologram. Try putting you hand in there and touching it. Obviously that defeats the purpus. But again. this is not a hologram.
seplrm 3 years ago
Putting your hand in there and touching is not what makes a hologram a hologram. You wouldn't want to try putting your hand in the Japanese version of the plasma volumetric display, now would you?
thoughtwaretv 3 years ago
Listen, in almost all sci-fi, a hologram is something you can pass your hand threw. However, I conceed it is not what makes a hologram a hologram. But this invention is either re-inventing convential ideas about what a hologram could be, or it is an attempt a duplicating the aw we've come to admire in sci-fi movies. The latter which I believe to be true. Purhaps time will prove the former true with a population ready to except it's new inception. Whatever, I don't care, but it's no hologram
seplrm 3 years ago
I'll be sure to let my high-tech watch know that it's not a high-tech watch because Science Fiction dictates all high-tech watches have a microphone and a speaker.

picardout 3 years ago
Dear Picardout,
Sometimes a technology arrives and its potential is not immediately clear.
Check out Office Labs and you'll see.

one question. have you heard of a new world order? and have a nice day. peace and namaste. :)
ingance 4 years ago
The future is what we make of it. There'll always be people trying to impose world views upon us. This has been so since civilization began, up to this day. We don't need a theoretical conspiracies to have people trying to impose their idea of "order" on our idea of the "world".
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
As humanity attempts to achieve new levels of organization and knowledge awareness, we will have to overcome our fears and paranoias, and start working towards a better, ordered world, where life's liberty remains and only change for the better.

good point! you get a smily for that!"yay!" :) see. now here is the problem when the elite think they contorl everything and they use this technology for evil means. look at "project blue beam" it may have hit one of your skies alreadly and WILL hit all of our skies SOON! that is a problem agreed? when power is abused. and people and creatures suffer and die as a result. :( have a nice day and namaste :)
ingance 4 years ago
They've been able to move the masses without any evidence whatsoever.
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
dont trust wikipedia. look here at youtube. or just look at my favorites look at. they will be in the back.
ingance 4 years ago
I mean...lets think about this. We have an Artificial Intelligence roaming in mars.
If a group of religious fanatics rich-folks want to fulfill their hopes of experiencing a kingdom come light show, by using technology to make some cheap light show to abuse minds, it is indeed truly sad, but we can make their efforts useless by educating people and promoting critical thought, teaching people the value of reevaluating every now and then their long held ideas and beliefs
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
Human critical thought has to be trained, and from my point of view, it is on the rise.
More and more people are releasing their minds from the petty mysticism of the past and reevaluating incompatible, long held beliefs.
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
yeah. because look at the structure of a prymarid and place us "average folk" at the bottom. and place the elite at the top. if we are suppoting them what if we i dunno stop doing what we are doing right now?! stop shopping stop watching tv. and started thinking, we outnumber them! think about it. it is your god-given right! SO THINK!
ingance 4 years ago
hm...I just don't buy the elite conspiracy sorry :)
I do agree that there are "big interests" within elite societies, companies and groups and that I think its completely wrong when those interests care not for those negatively affected, specially when health and public well being is involved.
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
it is not a "conspiracy" it is a reality. i agree some aspects of it are a little crazy. but agree with me on this a group of "rich people who think they control the world and us (normals)" and there is tooo much evidence to prove it otherwise. if not well bummer for you :( if you want i guess you could think what you want then. well see you later then bye. :( have a nice day peace and namaste! :)
ingance 4 years ago
Wanting control of others is not a matter of being rich or poor, it is not limited to pyramids of social status, nor goverments or the private industry. It is not limited to race, or nationality.
It is a matter of indifference and specifically ignorance.
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago
One powerful tool to confront this is knowledge, technology, imagination and the wisdom and action to do whats right.
What I'm saying is not that you're wrong. But that there is more to it than meets the eye and a mirror can reflect much about this problem.
thoughtwaretv 4 years ago

The answer is in part to create or promote a culture of educated consuming, and to collectively put pressure on people and companies that don't do whats right. That there are people economically superior to us isn't whats wrong. Its how wealth is put to use (or lack of positive use) that worries me
