This is NOT the version i remember seeing on MTV...the one i remember had cartoons in it. Song is still righteous! Where is the other version with the animation??
So excited right now because this song has been buzzing in my head forever and this is the first time hearing it since.....whenever.....thanks for posting
Saw them support Dire Straits at Maine Road, Manchester, early 90s. Electrifying performance, especially a guitarist who wouldn't go off during their band break and did this ridiculous incredible solo for ages just entertaining the huge stadium crowd. It was amazing!
I think these guys had a wee stroke of melancholly in some of their quieter stuff actually. Do you know "Shadow & Jimmy" or "Anytime Lisa", or "Wedding Vows in Vegas"? Even "Love can be Bad Luck"?
They all have clever, downbeat lyrics and a message to them too! I think there's a matureness to some of their less well known stuff, honestly!
This is the beauty of "The Tube" don'tcha see it?!? WE THE PEOPLE are the ones who DECIDE and not some payola guy who's under "the thumb".
And believe IT, all of THE ARTISTS appreciate the fact that "THE NEW UNDERGROUND" - that's YOU and ME keep it going and not some hack with his hand out for the doller.
I agree that "Walk The Dinosaur" was kitchy, and fell in line with what Was (Not Was) was being marketed as in the late-80s, a kind of comedy-soul group. "Spy", however, is a serious Power R&B Funk Jam, a tune that really showed the singing chops of "Sweet Pea" Atkinson and Harry Bowens, as well as the masterful synth instrumentation skills of the "Was Brothers". The song reached #16 on the U.S. Billboard charts, but seemed to be quickly forgotten, unlike "Dinosaur". A shame.
"I made a voodoo doll of her and sat around and squeezed her"... who else could make such awesome lyrics shine but a WAS? Most talented group to come out of Detroit in years. I love them because their music is as skewed as my mind. If any of you can get your hands on "BORN TO LAUGH AT TORNADOES" I highly recommend you do so. Probably the most overlooked LP of the 80's.

Not only one of the best R&B songs ever written, but a really cool video too! True Detroit Michigan soul. "Sweet Pea" Atkinson is one smooth cat.

This is a catchy song from Was not was this song it didn't had much air play besides walk like a dinosaur which was considered as a one hit wonder.

"What Up, Dog?" is one of the most underrated albums ever. One of the best tracks on an album full of great songs, albeit a schizophrenic album.

Yes, I'm still a huge fan of Was (not Was), and think they are sadly neglected today!

David, not Don is the lyricist.

I discovered them back in the day via their awesome collaboration with Bonnie Raitt on her "Love Letter" song. Man, talk about a hard video to find.

"I used a tiny camera ... I thought I'd Japanese her??" Again, who would've come up with those lyrics besides Don Was??? Simply brilliant.

Why is this song ignored by 80s radio?
chrispdx 3 years ago 3
Unfortuneately they will be remembered most for "Walk the Dinosaur" which is a nursery rhyme compared to the brilliance of this song.
