  • See Steve Jobs loved Halo, thats why halo is the best game in the world

  • lol it would have totally failed if it was mac only....microsoft really helped them out...money and allowing xbox development

  • Wow, think how different Apple would now be if they had gotten a real hardcore game both technically and mechanically as their leading software..

  • What would xbox be without halo? This has got to be the greatest purchase MS has made.

  • I can only imagine it went something like this:

Apple: We will be making a game for ---

MS: LOL. Dude, we bought the game company! :P

    Apple: FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUCC---

  • We'll miss you Steve :( RIP

  • where can i download this

  • Fuck you if you disliked

  • I wish that they made halo for again, FUCK U MICROSOFT!!!!!!

  • Ah, what might have been had Microsoft passed on Bungie?

  • Steve Jobs must have stabbed the person who told him Bungie got bought by Microsoft.

  • thumbs up if your the 117'th liker

  • @RiverAcrobat hahaha lol I was!

  • Can you just imagine being there at that time. There has never been a cool game and amazing graphics at that time. To see that for the first time would just blow all of us away.

  • if microsoft never bought bungie we culdve been playing halo on our ipods lol

  • And the saga begins..

  • nostalgia to much old stuff i get shaky

  • didn't know that was Apple Idea

  • YEAH 240 P ALL THE WAY!

  • :) I remember sitting at home watching this and thinking, "that looks weird, but cool I guess". Little did I know, my mind was about to be fucked. <3 Bungie

  • this looks better than reach

  • wait wait is halo and halo combat evoled two diffrent rhings?

  • @TechThoughts Microsoft wanted the game "halo" to have a longer name, something that would give people a hint so that would know what kind of a game it was. Halo combat evolved is the released first halo game, not the third person one shown here.

  • when this people first heard the music they must have jizzed

  • I wonder what would happen if Apple owned Bungie....

  • Microsoft sucks for buying Bungie. Halo made the Xbox what it is today... :[ and now its ending without a proper end to the epic, because of Microsoft. :[

  • If they were still making it for the mac Halo would suck ass and would have shit graphics lol

  • i really need help on the story line. did bungie read all the halo books in order to make reach???? did microsoft read the books? and why was the flood in halo wars when it was set before halo was found??

  • Microsoft is badass for buying Bungie out in the neck of time. If not for them, Halo would most likely be a Mac or Sony exclusive.

  • @flipysrevenge96 I think just might be the only person in history to ever use the words "Microsoft" and "badass" in such close proximity.

  • @marktrade88 Well, yeah they screw up (a LOT) especially with 360 repairs flowing in thanks to the RRoD

  • @flipysrevenge96 It fucking sucks that Microsoft bought Bungie. Halo would have been released for Mac and PC, instead of just the Xbox 360. Now only 360 users and their shitty systems get Halo while PC is stuck with H2 and Mac is still stuck with H1. Fuck Microsoft and the 360.

  • @MBP6705 The 360 is fun..... Reach blew the fuck out of CoD. Halo owns. so does the 360...

  • @flipysrevenge96 A good PC is way better than a 360. The only thing I like about the 360 is the controller, which I can use with my PC or Mac. PC can support higher resolution and graphics, and the components of the 360 suck. Something like 60 or 70% of my 360 owning friends have gotten the red ring of death or other failures. Many less of their PCs have failed.

Anyways, isn't Reach coming to the PS3? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

  • @MBP6705 Nope. U might have read it but that certainly doesn't make it true.

  • i have a mac and all the system reqs but i cant find this game anywhere =(

  • this video is so funny for its irony

  • So Microsoft bought bungie? Please responed. Thanks :3

  • @AtleeRaider Yep, and then a few years later, they became a separate company again, but Microsoft still owned the rights to Halo. That is why it stayed a 360 exclusive.

  • If ms didnt buy Bungie this would be a sony game only god damit!!

  • and microsoft wins again

  • i wonder what apple are thinking now .hmmmm

    "DD..AAAMMMMMM YOU MICROSOFT YOU

    YOU YOU MOTHER FUKERS "

  • YAWN...

  • this was not out and i wounder why.

  • a simple name, a simple anouncment, a simple project, which turned out to be such a HUGE game in gaming history, Mac should have tightend their grip on this, otherwise this cosonole war would have been real diffrent if their was no Halo on a microsoft console

  • The graphics are amazing for '99

  • would have been pretty cool if the control display on the ghost would have stayed purple.

  • *Sigh* What happened? This game looks 10 times as great as the actual game. What did bungie do?

  • I <3 Halo, best games ever made.

  • This is at its best... too bad microsoft bought them

  • what would xbox be like without this game. nothing. To bad microsoft bought it bungie

  • Without doubt, this was in my opinion...one of the finest games ever made.

  • Cant believe that Bungie sold the Halo franchise to M$! Why?? That or Halo wouldnt get online support or something?

  • @EmberBurn333

because microsoft had more to offer, and not just money, microsoft guaranteed them it would be popular, and provided them with a game studio better then the one they had,

  • yeah its still halo... i mean it was halo then. and nowadays.

  • Fast Forward to now. And Bungie is finally free of Microsoft rule, but Halo is out right owned my Microsoft. But, now Bungie now make a 10 year long Publishing deal with Activision, and no Activision didn't buy-out Bungie. But now is going to make a unnamed Multi-platform under Activision. But no worrys, this time around Bungie can do what ever they want with this game. Even go to another Publisher if they want.

  • oh yeah i forgot combat evolved was online for computers. it was the Xbox didnt have online at the time

  • every1 that works at microsoft probably has a mac...lol

  • @xismax03

    probably not...

  • This should be Level 2: Covenant Warthog Run.

  • those elites were some ugly sonza bitches huh? am i Right?????

  • F#$* Microsoft =)

  • well, it makes since that FATX, the file system used for the Xbox is so similar to Mac's file system. Also, Bungee had been making games for Mac for years. Marathon was a great FPS series back in the 90s and was even referenced in Red vs. Blue. However, poor Mac lovers get no games. Shoot, I think people running Linux get more games.

  • you know, i think halo may have been lot cooler if it were made like this.

  • w0w, jason jones looks so nervous

  • i think halo would be better if that went ahead that looked pretty good

  • I still find it extremely ironic that Bungie ended up blowing off Macintosh for Microsoft!

    ^_^

  • You know, Bungie didn't blow Mac off, they were bought out by Microsoft.

  • so the whores could keep halo

  • what the fuck is the difference between 4 weeks and 1 month?

  • then blowing off Microsoft 7 years later and becoming independent.

  • Microsoft Bought Bungie, So Microsoft blew off Apple ...

  • I wouldnt say it like that. I would say it more like Microsoft fucked Apple then took all the goods.

  • what would halo be now if this was released 0.o

  • it would run on the iConsole

  • i think apple should make a gaming system. maybe the next, NEXT GEN console

  • would halo 1 run in lepoard

  • Yep, in fact it was re-released as a universal application for PPC and Intel as Halo 2.0 with slightly better graphics.

It actually has confused people who thought it was the real halo 2/

  • Hah! it's funny though that this game was all rendered in OpenGL. Does that mean that when they began development for the xbox and windows versions that they had to scrap the entire graphics engine and re-code it using directx?

... It's shame in terms of graphics, because while I don't know if it's the case now, when halo was released, openGL was defiantly a far better system.

  • Well Halo was originally a co-op 3rd person shooter with many elements, characters, and creatures from their Marathon series. In 1999, Microsoft and SGI broke apart and ended their openGL project called Fahrenheit. That's when they moved all development to DirectX (Win2K is the last to have real native OpenGL support). So yes, much of the engine was scrapped and the game was redeveloped with a slightly different story and a whole new gameplay style.

  • OpenGL is the professional choice for high-end 3D modeling. Maya, an industry standard is used in the making of many Blockbuster movies and video games.

A more closer comparison is the Playstation 3, Wii, PSP, and iPhone which all run OpenGL ES.

A last example is OpenGL's efficiency. Vista uses Direct3D for it's Interface, while OS X and other UNIX based system used OpenGL. To run Vista's Direct3D interface, you need a higher spec system compared to an OpenGL based OS.

  • @GranitW : directx bitch, does 3d sterovision, superior

  • can you believe it !!! Ten years ago.. i remember waiting for this game to come out and now the trilogy is over !! time flies too fast !!

  • well now we g2 wait for halo odst or recon or whatev they finally decide to name it.

  • @joeytwnty2 halo 4 coming out

  • Everyone is forgetting even though Halo was stripped down to work on the console, it still revolutionized the way shooters played on consoles. No one thought they'd work until halo proved them wrong

  • Then what was Goldeneye and Perfect Dark then ?? before "Halo Xbox" there was "Perfect Dark N64" and before that "Goldeneye N64" both shooters and classics.. both revolutionary. Halo was a traditional PC shooter by design released on a console, this was very risky.. because PC shooters made to work on consoles were not successful pre-halo, but the designers of halo implemented the gameplay with the xbox controller with superb fashion, so much that the xbox version was prefered to PC me included.

  • It's likely you prefer the Xbox versions because the PC ports we're the worst ports I have ever played in my life. Maybe it's just that the gameplay doesn't hold up compared to other shooters, but I find it impossible to play it unless it's on the Xbox.

  • U took the words outta my mouth.

  • If only Bungie had said, "no".

  • but imagine the differnce in the gaming world

  • The xbox would not have been the hit that it was without halo.

It might have been a blow to microsoft serious enough to never had the xbox 360 make it past the drawing board.

  • Steve Jobs must've been pissed when Microsoft bought the rights to Halo

  • yea. but they probably dont care right now becuse they have better things to do like finish OS 10.5.7

  • Damn, sometimes I forget that once upon a time Bungie were the Gods of Mac Gaming. Where does the time go?

  • now the halo series and bungie belong to microsoft and xbox but at least halo 1 is still for mac =) the multiplayer is still strong ignore the shitty 2001 graphics

  • For your information, Bungie split from mircosoft in October 2007

  • Microsoft still owns the rights to Halo though

  • This is cool, I wasn't aware that the games theme song was this old.

  • Hmm, I always heard that the first Halo demo had Steve Jobs personally playing the game. Well, here's photographic evidence to the contrary - Steve just gives an introduction and the demo looks pretty non-interative. =)

  • Damn, most people have to admit, those graphics look badass for an alpha build from 1999!

  • lol master chief waved at the elites to get their attention what a jackass lol

  • bad ass is the correct term i believe

  • also know this

the song from this demo is also featured in halo in 2001

so the main halo song is nearly 10 years old, maybe even older!

  • Just imagine what Halo could have become if Bungie hadn't sold out and cram their creation into piece of limited hardware that to this day has to rely on training-wheels game-mechanics to make FPS play even remotely possible.

  • that is the reason i hate Macs they almosted killed halo

  • what do you mean?

Halo was originally going to be on Macs, PCs, and the PS2 (Port). It wasn't just a Mac game, it was bungie's sceond game that was native to both Macs and PCs (after Oni).

  • What about Marathon 2?

  • Marathon 2 was ported to Windows, it was originally native to the Mac platform only. Oni was the first Bungie game developed from the ground up for multiple platforms.

  • True.

  • @USStealth1288 Same here mac sucks it cant even do mw2

  • Bungie was one of the old school Mac developers, before MS bought it for Halo. They're now separated from MS and plan to start making Mac games in the future once more, along with PC games. Halo was their third game that was for both Mac and PC, the others were Oni and a port of Marathon 2. The rest were Mac only games.

  • nice, im getting the new macbook :D

  • Halo had dozens of weapons, back in 1999/2000. It had to be cut down a lot to port it onto the XBox. And the maps got very repetitive, with relatively few textures. What a shame.

  • yea, and a lot of characters were removed too :(

  • HAHA. I wonder if Steve Jobs gave it a go when it was released on the Xbox? For sure he got in on the action when it was ported to the Mac. When I saw this I thought "imagine the flop it could have been if Halo wasn't stolen, i mean bought out by Microsoft... but then it would have been put out for Windows, and since it wasn't a FPS, it could have been a big success. But I still laugh at Jobs who was so excited... Makes the Xbox victory much SWEETER! :p

  • the graphics looks shitty compared to the xbox THE CHIEF LOOKS LIKE HE WAS BANGED WITH A GIANT STICK AND THE PLANET LOOKS LIKE A COLORED EMPTY PIZZA BOX.

  • two things: it was in Alpha stage, and the year was 1999.

  • It looked shitty on the mac, plain and simple. It had crap graphics and physics and that video made it look like a friggin RPG with guns.

  • just to note, it looked just as bad in Windows at the time. this was the Alpha stage.

  • iChief anyone ?

  • I now hate Microsoft! Halo would've probably been better on Mac than Xbox!

  • well i think then we wouldnt have seen any of the cool stuff like halo three and all the extras and polished graphics

  • well its on the mac,

and the xbox version is far superior to what this one was turning out to be

  • lol tard it would make so little there would no halo 3

  • I just cant see how this is state of the art for it's time. Both open gl and Halo. The graphics are, well not too good compaired to PC games of it's time. Mainly, the Warcraft series. I have played Warcraft III which also came out in the late 1990s and It's graphics are better. Because of what Macintoshs are, they simply cannot become gaming computers. I would be willing to admit i'm wrong if the day came, but I dont see how PPC based computers could compete with Intel in terms of games.

  • N64, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 all use PPC.

  • I realise this is late, but PPC's are just better for running games, there isn't any argument, that and the ps3 is actually a very powerful "computer" capable of doing good stuff like folding at fantasic rates. PPC's were good, their power consumption wasn't.

  • the xbox was the most poweful system of it's time, running a pent. 3. faster than the ps2 and gc both running ppc chips. also the ps3's cpu is a cell processor, it iis a completely new and revolutionary design. the reason they chose ppc is because most console games already ran on ppc arcitecture.

  • man the game cube didnt really appeal to gamers. it lasted only like 2-3 years on one consol.

  • 1. Arguments for the xbox are void because its pretty much disappeared whereas the ps2 still sells very well.

    2. At least the ps3 wouldnt cause anyone any serious damage if it fell on them.

    3. its nothing to do with most games already being ppc its the RISC vs CISC argument, people with a basic knowledge of architecture will know what i mean. -.-

    4. Look up cell processor for me, it is a PPC processor...

  • i no the cell cpu is ppc, but the two have nothing to do with eachother. im not a cpu expert, i know kinda what risc is but no cisc, and y does weight make a diff in a HOME console. also, the only reason the ps2 was around for much longer is because alot of ppl didnt want to switch to the ps3, and alot still wanted a sony system.

  • the Xbox dissapeared because nvidia stopped making it's gpu around about 2004 or so so microsoft had to release another console before anyone realised they weren't selling xbox's anymore and thats why the xbox 360 came out in 2005 and probably why it cooks itself too.

  • Warcraft 3 came out in 2002/2003 of course the graphics are going to be better than something released in 1999 or 2000. And the graphics in this video are on par with UT and Quake3, but only just.

  • Really? Well, there are still many higher quality and higher graphic 3d games for the PC like C&C. There r better examples but I wasn't really into computer games then. I was very young.

  • The warthog moves so much better than any of the other halo games

  • That's because bungie had to rewrite all the code and were in a rush, but in Halo 2 they wern't in a rush so it moves much better then.

  • Well the graphics sure did look nice for a 1999 game

  • That was one of the big things about this game, was the graphics. Right before this presentation a company, Alias, came up to demenstrate their product, Maya. Maya is the industry standard for 3D graphics in the Film Industry. They show a 3D scene, then a quicktime video of the rendered results. This tidbit of information might make the comment in the above video more understandable: "Quicktime is really cool, but what I'm about to show you, is not a quicktime movie".

  • I find this so ironic

  • because its was a game for macs and now it is a game just for xbox, microsoft´s console?

  • the because of what steve said and now its a Windows exclusive

  • Halo was and still is one of my favorite games on the XBox. It's amazing to see how it originally looked on the Mac.

  • yeah, Bungie pretty much redid the game from the ground up when Microsoft bought them. It still has the same basic storyline, but some of the characters are missing and it's not 3rd person anymore. Also the graphics aren't that good in this demo, it was still a work in progress.

  • nice video

  • didn't Microsoft buy bungie out and make halo for the x-box?

  • Yep, about six months after this video was taken MS bought Bungie. Halo was then completely redone for the Xbox. This delayed Halo for the Windows Pc and Mac from a 2000 launch date, to a 2003 one.

  • also though it was delayed, they still couldn't make it go xbox live because that element wasn't finished
