if ever there was A SONG years ahead of its time THIS IS IT bankers and money men should be made to it every day . better still get it released and play every day on the radio tv etc
@KirkSandall I just upped the full version on my channel. There was a 10 minute limitation on YouTube until recently. The link is above or go back to my home page and you'll find it. Enjoy!
people who know me know how much i hate "flutes and saxamaphones in rock and there are precious few times when they are acceptable" this is one of those times..
Definitely NOT Jim gordon on drums. He looks nothing like the drummer on the video. I'd go with Roger Hawkins. In any case, the drummer rocks hard. and is musical too.
1st convention center show Feb 73 @ TCCC . I forget who they were fronting for I was blown away so much with Winwood & Ginger Baker on drums & the sax player. We were 2nd row looking @ Winwood. Long time before "Higher Love" lol
If I'm not mistaken this drummer isn't Jim Capaldi or Roger Hawkins. I'm pretty sure it's Jim Gordon. The guy that got even more famous for flipping out and chopping up his mother with an axe. Weird but true ! I guess sex, drugs, and being a rock star was more than he could handle.
@highhats11: Trust me, it's Roger Hawkins. I'm a huge fan of him and his band. I know his whole life story. Are you a drummer? Listen to "Land Of A Thousand Dances" by Wilson Pickett. That's Roger Hawkins on drums. One of the greatest drum breaks in history.
I only got the cassette of the album not long ago, but my interest in them was re-sparked with Woodstock 1994, where Steve said they had missed the first one, and making up for that
Thanks for posting this! So cool that in the era of guitar gods Traffic sounds so good without the presence of a lot of guitar. I know - Dave Mason was the guitarist - but he didn't stand out as much as others of the day.
@jeflar56 guitar is great, make no mistake, but this is a band that's groove heavy, and jamming, where you can use all manner of musical instrument. This song is so good because of it's melody and chorus, very easily stands the test of time
@jeflar56 If this concert was recorded in early 1972, Dave Mason had already left the group by then. Rick Gretch is credited on the LP as having played both bass and guitar, but I don't see him here on stage (the bass player is definitely not Rick Gretch).
@rayjr62: The bassist here is David Hood. He and the drummer you see here (Roger Hawkins) are the rythym section for the legendary Muscle Shoals Band. There isn't enough room on this thread to list how many smash hits they played on. It's mind- boggling. They were hired by Traffic just for this tour.
never thought i meet someone who liked steve winwood as much as i did ... Awesome set of videos you got - thanks. All of them are perfect.... if you see something that looks like a star....it might come from the empty pages guiding your vision to heaven to roll right stones
I love Steve Winwood and Traffic, but god he wore the ugliest shirts! Very much liked the rest of him--still do.Oh and did I forget to mention just how great this band was?
Did I listen to this song about some several thousand times? NOOOOOOOOO!
It was a few more thousand times more!
I saw Traffic at the Capital Centre, Maryland in 1974, there will be no times like the 60's and the 70's, sorry kids, look back to where music came from and the 60's and 70's is where it';s at!
Agreed. I feel sorry for this younger generation that wasn't born then. They missed out on a magical time. . . and as Lakers Baskeball coach Phil Jackson once said, "If you remember the 60s, then you WEREN'T THERE"
Wow, what a treat to find this!! Seems like you're a pretty huge Steve Winwood fan. I'm trying to remember...didn't Dave Mason play with Traffic at some point? I used to have most of his stuff on vinyl. Thanks for posting, I get to see Winwood with Clapton in Denver, can hardly wait 'til June.
That whole damn album is good !
