  • My RR girl used to do this when she was younger, whenever she was uncertain and sensed danger. Our ridgie boy never does it (he's a bit dense though — for a Ridgeback, anyway ; ).

Your boy is so beautiful, so focussed and intent. He has such an inbuilt grace, elegance and proportion about him, which so many of the weirdly-shaped modern breeds whose form doesn't follow function don't have any more.

  • love Ridgeback , i have one :)

  • Both by the look of it.

  • Beautiful animal!

  • haha! my ridgeback used to do this too!!!

  • we have an anatolian shepard ridgeback mix and we does the same thing to squirells. lol

  • Beautiful boy! I love how his foot twitches, he's SO focused lol

  • my German shepherd lifts up his paw if he sees a rabbit or pheasant in our fields and any movement and he'll chase it

  • My Ridgeback does the same thing, her back legs shake whilst she points, must be a nervous thing.

  • my ridgie dosent do that i wonder why

  • Awesome dogs ... and yours (naturally) is beautiful! My RR is such fun. We pretend to go "Wabbit" hunting sometimes when we're on walks. Her forehead wrinkles up and she gets very studied and serious as I call out "here wabbit, wabbit, wabbit, wabitts ... where are youuuuuuuu?" LOL .. RR personalities are the best!

  • my ridgeback pup does that same exact thing to birds

  • lol my rrs do that buut not as long

  • I didn't even know they pointed. I just though RRs tracked game and held it at bay as best as they could. RRs are amazing!

  • Well, they are multipurpose dogs ;)

  • @Janeway1269 Ridgeys point, stalk, hunt, fetch, retrieve, they are an all round dog, so stealthy, I love them

  • thats nice :-) my dog, honey, does that too :-) our RR are simply amazing!

  • haha, my ridge does that too! And when I say "GO!", he's jumping after the thing he's chasing like a gaselle. Really funt to watch :)

  • That's a ridgeback taught to point. ha I have 2. The best dog's in the world. Im safe 24/7.

  • you dont teach a dog to do that, its a natural thing, i work lurchers and the raising of the front paw is a very common mark, in all breeds. ridgebacks are very game dogs and it would eb a surprise to see one that wasnt interested in hunting, even if it is just marking to a sound or smell.

  • Case and point, my miniature schnauzer does it too. You should see him when there are some small rodents or a cat nearby.

  • omg! your dog is extremely beautiful !!

  • Mine does this too (hunting squirrels). They'll freeze in any position if the prey identifies the threat. Mine will even freeze with her back paw in midair. They also do not want to put the paw down at that moment to avoid any noise. You'll also find that the closer they get to the prey the lower to the ground the head will go in order to present a lower profile. Compare the ridgeback's posture and motions to a lioness stalking and you'll see where they learned it.

  • RR's did not learn stalking behaviour from lions, it is part of predatory motorn patterns that most of dogs have. It is innate behavior, not learned.

  • My Ridgeback does that from time to time but only for a few seconds maybe there was a pointer some where in there make up!

  • THAT is beautiful. I wouldn't want to be a bird with THAT RR on my tail!

  • Oh wow!!

    Your RR is a beaut!!

I have a RR cross, 8 months, and she does exactly that when she sees the birds on the fields haha

  • check out his back leg muscles - wow. i have a 12 month boy rr and he loves the hunt aswell

  • Ridgebacks are beautiful dogs. Mines only 6months at the momentand is growing fast!

  • That is a gorgeous animal. Of all the hound breeds I like the Rhodesian Ridgeback the best. They are highly intelligent and a great guard dog also. Back in the 1950's during the Mau Mau uprising in Africa there was a story of how some Mau Mau terrorists attacked a woman and her teenaged daughters on an isolated farm in Kenya. The family's Rhodesian Ridgebacks ripped these guys apart, even killed a couple of them. Tough dogs.

  • mine does that too and she loves birds

    she's 15 mos and 80 lbs

  • Gorgeous RR! Mines only 7 months but does the exact same thing with squirrels in the park! Can't wait until mines this big!

  • Enjoy in his puppy time, you'll miss it when he grows up. :-)

  • how old is he and how heavy?

  • 18 months, 39kgs

  • Your Rhodesian Ridgeback is very beautiful! =D

  • Thanks!
