The MX5 raison d`etre are its low limits balanced behaviour as well as its directness and agility to enable a driver to safely explore those limits. Thats why an MX5 at 60-80Km/h on a tight winding road is a whole lotta fun. At those speeds in a 911, Impreza or Z you will be bored. Of course at illegal speeds say 120-140km/h the latter come into their own and the MX5's shortcomings become obvious. With the state of traffic and speed limits youll always have more opportunities for fun in the MX5.
If you look at the instrument panel shot at 3:30, the tachometer is at 2,000 RPM and the speedometer is at... 0 MPH! (Or 0 KPH). Is that a parked shot, with the engine revved up, edited in, or does the new car have a defective speedometer??!!

This guy is a moron, for a start the MX5 has always been available with an automatic option, why not test the manual, i don't find my NA model lacks feel, i've owned the NA and NB models and driven the NC, it's horses for courses but the NA is the purest of them all, more a roadster in the true 60s spirit, which was what Mazda were after in the first place.
This guy sucks. Manual's are always better for a roadster. My dad just baught a Mazda Miata MX5 2008 today, and it's a Manual. It's a manual because he know's manuals faster, and add's alot of personality to the car.
Why would you say Mazda ruined the MX5? They turned it from a girly little car to something sexy, bigger and still maintains the same wonderful handling and reliability. Who cares if they introduced an automatic, the automatic is still hella fun to drive.

@Folks that said no feel in the steering...uhhh yup, pretty much. My NC's steering is the tightest, most responsive, and gives the most feedback of any car I've ever driven that cost <$30,000USD.

Old Miata hands down.. the reason for me to dislike the new one.. It is more refined, its quieter, it has more trunk space,it has more cheap plastic in the interior, It has unfortunate (smiley face Mazda) styling, it doesn't have folding headlights, it has a folding hardtop. To me less is more.
But don't get me wrong I still love the new ones... I just wouldn't buy one with any options or Egad! an AUTOMATIC! at that point I would rather walk !

I respect the opinion of this mans review. Each individual defines "fun" in a different way. I owned a Generation 2 Miata for two years. Just recently purchased a 2010 GT with hard top. To me it's more fun. It's more refined, it's more powerful. It's "MORE" without losing what's made the miata so successful in all these years.
Grow up 4car, take out the power steering for a direct steering. And this car IS the definition of roadster, if you don't like the original, then you don't like Roadsters.
Mazda have "Ruined the MX-5" with an Automatic Transmission, well my friend it is an OPTION, NOT STANDARD. Mazda did this to appease those who want an MX-5 but want an Auto...NOTHING more and Nothing less.
And PLEASE while the MKI NA MX-5 was...I repeat WAS, a fabulous Roadster there it finishes, because the latest NC MKII is Light Years ahead of the first MX-5 particularly in SAFETY and Equipment, this is the best MX-5 made.

The vast, vast majority of people will go for the manual anyway, so why test the automatic and talk about it as if it's the only transmission available? I respect the opinion of this mans review. Each individual defines "fun" in a different way. I owned a Generation 2 Miata for two years. Just recently purchased a 2010 GT with hard top. To me it's more fun. It's more refined, it's more powerful. It's "MORE" without losing what's made the miata so successful in all these years.
To each his own, I suppose.

Grow up 4car, take out the power steering for a direct steering. And this car IS the definition of roadster, if you don't like the original, then you don't like Roadsters.

Mazda have "Ruined the MX-5" with an Automatic Transmission, well my friend it is an OPTION, NOT STANDARD. Mazda did this to appease those who want an MX-5 but want an Auto...NOTHING more and Nothing less.
And PLEASE while the MKI NA MX-5 was...I repeat WAS, a fabulous Roadster there it finishes, because the latest NC MKII is Light Years ahead of the first MX-5 particularly in SAFETY and Equipment, this is the best MX-5 made.

Who is this guy? "Mazda have ruined the MX-5." Why, because they offer an automatic for the UK market? The vast, vast majority of people will go for the manual anyway, so why test the automatic and talk about it as if it's the only transmission available? And he contradicts himself at the end by saying the Mk1 offers a "more involving experience" when he's just slagged it off for having no steering feel!
