That maybe so, but this particular meter is a POM and it is the same meter I work with.

Depending on the meter it can be as advanced as an RF link that senses when a car has left and "Expires" the time.

But in San Antonio the one meter per slot is being replaced with meters that print out a ticket one puts in the window, time and date stamp plus location and serial number.

Or you can buy a 'Park-Tag' a thing that goes in the windshield and is read by the passing motor maid and street sensors.

You can also add this "feature" to your Toll Tag.

What happens is that the meter patrol simply reset the meter.

Put the quarter in the meter and do the trick.

The meter records everything and time stamps it, if it jams at 10:00 and there was no time recorded for 15 hours, guess what? ticket!

It the meter has 1 hour of time at 09:59 and jams at 10:00 it looks like you just had a bad day.

Wrong on all counts, I work with the POM meters everyday. They aren't nearly as sophisticated as you think. No timestamping, no recording of anything, it just reads metal content in currency.

The problem is not 25-cent fees, but the huge FINES (e.g. $ 20 to 75+ or even towing!) EVEN for one minute overtime.

Cities know this and probably earn greater income from fines than fees!

They should of find a way to fairly charge for time used - AFTERWARD.

It's illegal for normal business to add penalty fees for unanticipated services used.

Cities are capitalizing on our imperfect memory to return in time to RE-feed the meters, etc. (= entrapment?)

Set a reminder/ALARM on your cell phone!

Feeding meters after they expired is illegal here. The meters have maximum time limits in order for the businesses to get a turnaround rate for the parking spaces. Without limits, people would just sit all day long in the same spot and anyone that showed up downtown afternoon wouldn't be able to park at all.

But once you take the money out or it drops in, the system resets itself and the error msg "Out of order" will go away. So you need to use a thick glue that dries quick so the coin stays there. can be any metal object that will fit, just make sure you see the error message and the that glue dried and its a strong glue

If the metered spaces were all free, people that live or work in the area would fill up all the spaces and nobody else would be able to find a place to park. They have maximum time limits in order to achieve a turnaround rate for the parking.

I think you underestimate the amount of people that live and work in downtown areas.

Also, remove parking meters (revenue loss forever) and no tickets (lost revenue forever) AND build free lots (spending an assload of unneccesary money.) What you are asking, is for the city to tax the hell out of you to make up for the money it would lose. Trust me, meters are a better way to go. Also, if a couple of quarters are too much money for you to spend, then I'll be damned if I take any fiscal advice from someone in dire straights.
