She was small in stature, but the voice was as big and expressive as a mountain. Yes, she had slancio, a passion and feel for the music that went far beyond the notes. I, too, find her high notes rather shrill, but the overall package certainly outweighs her vocal idiosyncrasies.
I wish I could see, or just listen, and the duet between Michael Giorgetta, of which the most beautiful passage is: "Stay close to me, the night is beautiful" I am convinced that Mc Neil has sung to great
Puccini does in under an hour what Wagner takes hours to unfold: raw, hard, realistic tragedy that when performed by a Renata Scotto shakes, rattles and rolls. . . .awesome opera and awesome singer. . . . .and we can see so much of her work via the wonderful telecasts. . . .re: Elisabetta and Manon Lescaut. Brava my favorite singer.
Very underrated, this great Renata Scotto. A real Italian singer. She gives 100%. Therefore her language is perfect, her moves are naturel. Why always Callas and Tebaldi ? The were also great in their own specialleties. But Callas not in Puccinis operas (she could not understand the character of the women, as she was an american. Renata was to lovely. But we stil have Renata Scotto, Magda Olivedro, Virsinea Zeani, Leyla Gencer, and so much other adorable singers.
@qklq42 You mean that Renata Scotto could not sing a decent Marguerite in Faust, simply cos she didnt understand the character of the woman, cos she was italian. Therefore Callas didnt understand Norma, for she was Greek-American. Gencer didnt understand 99% of the roles she sang, as she was Turkish...
No, I'd say the nostalgic element of this particular scene is not a "light moment" of the opera. (This scene with Stratas and Domingo is especially touching) I feel it's even stronger than the death of Luigi. I mean, come on, people die all the time in every opera, but to see in a Puccini opera, people actually talking about the love of the land and of friendship, that is rare, since every other Puccini aria would be centered around love.
OH MY GOD! The slancio, the accento drammatico, the perfect diction, the musicality, the drama, the sheer gutsiness of Renata Scotto here is beyond compare, perfect for this role! This and FANCIULLA DEL WEST are my two favorite operas by Puccini, because I feel they are the most honest.
@billyguns2 this is pretty. She was still in relatively good vocal estates.. here.. She took on some roles in the 80's that sort of ruined her lovely voice.. My she was thin/ svelte.. what a figure.
Magnificent..This is Opera-acting with the voice..the voice is organic, it does not have to soud robotic and all PERFECT..perfection is static and boring..HUMANS are not perfect, therefore, singing process is organic and not mechanical..it has to be full of life and emotion..and La Scotto is all that!
Anyone hearing and seeing this who does not "get" it is someone I do not care to know; they must be deaf, dumb, and blind. This is the operatic art encapsulated in less than four minutes. Does anyone know the identity of the conductor? he's quite good!
oh my god. renata is at her best, impeccable and ferocious actress that she is. but i'm so impressed with moldoveanu. it's so sad that he was pretty much an afterthought in his prime (he lived in the shadow of the so-called three tenors), when the houses today would probably storm castles and sacrifice babies to have such a tenor in their roster. wow. thank you so much for sharing!
this is thrilling. her studio recording with domingo, new philharmonia, and maazel is an absolute must have too! they bring all the excitement and the voice is a little bit cleaner than here. brava!
I was at this performance at the Met. Scotto was electric. The audience went wild.

I usually love Ms Scotto a lot but in this video I feel she exaggerates: Giorgetta is young and frustrated not raving.
This is too dramatic a rendering of what, after all, is a light moment of the opera
