If you some hardware (Mixer, Percussion controller, MIDI keyboard), i'd say Reason 4. I started out with FL Studio which is very easy to learn, but as soon as you get used to it you'll want to get something that packs more of a punch when it comes to features. No hardware? FL will do the basics you need. Somewhat hardware? Reason 4 I recommend. Hardware? Cubase 5

Garage band is cool, but i never use it I work at the apple store so i know it in and out, but what you should try to grab is Logic even if its Logic Express for like 200 bucks. You get a lot more control over it. Im using logic pro.. hit me if you git questions homie..
