instead of watching the video if looking at them distracts you, look at something else and listen to the song. the backing vocals work. it's just that we expect a backing singer to sing along rather than do this, but it works for the song.
Please, let me clear this up. Del's version is wonderful. Richard's version is equally wonderful. but the lonesome harmony by Patty G. in this version puts this particular version out of the park. It's in a category all by itself. If this doesn't send chills up your backside I feel sorry for you. Think about this- how would you sing harmony with RT on this song? It is by far the best thing since sliced bread.
@samdogdamndog2 Are you for f***ing real ??! Del McCoury is a fine bluegrass musician, none better (IMO), love his stuff with Steve Earle, but fer Gawd's sake - this is Richard Thompson here ! He wrote the song, plays the definitive version (deffo NOT this one !), is commonly held to be in the top 10 acoustic guitarists in the world, has spent the last 40+ years creating some of the world's most beautiful music, and would blow D McC off any stage he had the nuts to share with him. Do wise up !!
@GonzoRecovery Yeah, I'm for f***ing real. I don't really like Thompson's vocals, and I DO know he is a great guitarist. Sorry, I am not a fan, nor am I particular fan of Nancy. She is a bit too...well..."sweet" for my tastes. I can say "Del's is still tops" if I like it best, right? You can love this song to death done by Thompson if you like, I don't mind, and I promise I won't use and asterisked epithets to denigrate you. Oh, and I do love McCoury's work with Steve Earle, & Chieftains.
@samdogdamndog2 Of course, you're quite right ; you get to like / favour whichever version of the song you please, I was just genuinely gobsmacked that someone who obviously has a genuine appreciation of quality in a cross section of genres (had a peek around your channel) would think the DMcC version stood comparison with the RT. In my opinion (and ONLY in my opinion), he cannot hold a candle to him, at least on this one. Didn't mean to come over dictatorial - sorry ! Agree re: Nancy G.
I have loved this song since I bought Rumour and Sigh on vinyl all those years ago. I have a number of Nanci Griffith's albums too. I'm not sure what she adds but this is a great version of the song.

@jccully And RT's picking is so crisp on this version. This song always rips at my gut.

sounds like some chick just watching him whilst she's whacked out on drugs and going "yeah i wanna sing the song but I haven't a clue how it goes".

This is fantastic. I love Nanci Griffith. I think her ethereal backup on this song is perfect.

I don't know Nanci Griffith but her part seems rather extraterrestial here. Doesn't really fit. If she dyed her hair red at least...
