  • Held the drift till the curb mind.

  • The fact that he'd just had 10 pints down the Red Lion didn't exactly help.

  • What was the dickhead thinking of!

  • mix how ya want, I like he's driving skills ...

  • I've got crossplies on my Consul and they're a bit shit..but Ilike the original look

  • I like the way he just gives up and lets go of wheel and hides his face to add further insanity

  • That's Basil Fawlty's car

  • The driver's name is Bernie Fangle and he was quite a famous actor in the 1960s. He went mad and was locked up in a loony bin for raving on live TV that he was doomed to die on telly advertising crossply and radial tyres.

It seemed like bollocks at the time but ...

  • is this `coughing` bob fleming at the wheel?

  • 1100's were always tail happy. I had one back then until someone knicked me windscreen whilst I was in the pub, driving home and thought "odd, seems really cold" and yes, i was drink driving. naughty naughty sold it for £60 :-)

  • And don't turn corners at 60 Mph. They must have bought this type of car in bulk for PSAs in the 70s. They use the same type of car in almost every PSA back then.

  • looks like my blunders

  • they were called slicks here

  • better still don't drive like a noob

  • Best thing to do with a Austin 1100!

  • In the seventies in Britain, it was compulsory for anyone caught driving with a mix of tyres to be suspended from a crane and dropped on their roof

  • same outcome i suppose if you mix your drinks whilst mixing your radials and crossplys!...

  • Jeremy Clarksons Dad

  • I'm American and have never heard of crossplys, maybe we know them by a different name here?

  • @UtahImplosion Bias ply?

  • @UtahImplosion The Germans call them Diagonal tyres, if that's any help... I've heard the name "bias belted" somewhere, which I think is the same thing. By tradition, crossplies are denoted by inch measurements (6.00x13 is 6" wide on 13" diameter wheel) and radials are usually mm width x inch diameter (165x13 is 165mm wide tread on 13" wheel)

  • LMAO, fucking shitty cars were the Austin 1100, If that pedo looking chap had not weaved about showing off he would not have flipped it, silly cunt + shit car+ hydro suspension = looking a twat.

  • They're about as compatible as RRabbit42 and AmyRoseCute.

  • I always mix those tyres, but to be honest, when I'm driving I'm usually too drunk to care!

  • What is the lab scene at 0.26?

  • Crossply and radial tyres. Good for drifting .

  • Where did they get these fucking freaks to star in these adverts?

  • LOL@0:25

  • Whilst filming that they failed to get the 'crash' right the first time. Solution? Rush out and buy another Austin 1100, quickly spray it red, wipe the paint off the glass with thinners, and drop it...

Gawd I have some boring crap in my head...

  • Coca-Cola & Space Dust don't mix ;0)

  • Do crossply tyres exist any more, more to the point do Austin 1100s or that other much loved PIF car the Vauxhall Victor?

  • make sure its a michelin !

  • only if its a good year boom boom funny hey ?

  • Anyone notice that the explosion at the start happened at the side, not in the bottle?

  • if you mix custard creams and bourbon creams you may never live to regret it!!!

  • @peteron3 has paul bentley seen this video

  • I've seen it, that bloke deserved to die, because he stole that car from Basil Fawlty.

  • what a load of coswollop

  • lol

  • Just touching the brakes would impale himself on the steering column !

  • Just gone to check my tyres now. Thanks for the info. Ha ha!

  • It just me or was the car being driven by Leatherface from Texas chainsaw massacre just before it crashed?

  • Remember.Morris 1100's are Dangerous!

  • serves him right for buying fucking remoulds, and his tax disc had expired

  • poor 1100,crossplys on the front radials on the rear, what a waste of a good car

  • When that ad was shot it was merely a case of destroying the car before the rust ate it!

  • Ho ho, they rusted but not as much as the Vauxhall Victor. A Victor totals a BMC 1100 in the Keep Your Distance ad, but it would have died far earlier if someone had thrown water over it.

  • just as well he crashed he was on his way to hang around the school

  • @BREN70S hey i fink ur rite mate

  • @totenkophff43 just doin my public service , it was i who mixed the tyres ha ha ha , amazinly i was only 5 at the time he he

  • I just had to type in 'carboch' then to add a comment. Yer couldn't make it up! Was that a Michelin ZX on the left? Like the way it lands on its roof, very Monty Python!

  • I wish I could five star your description.

  • me too!

  • Morris 1100s and speed, they just dont mix.

  • OMG TOKYO DRIFT YO

  • Ha ha! I though that was John Cleese driving that car!

  • That's the world's most extravagant bong at the start of the clip. You can hear someone toking on it...

  • Love how the car just suddenly appears in a big field and falls perfectly upside-down! Ah well, gotta give them credit for at least not having the crane dropping it in shot...

  • good old days...there was a good government then and no do nowt scum

  • Hahahahaha this video is hilarious, and even more hilarious because of the description. 5/5

  • the first drifting competition ended badly

  • that wasn't the tyres! the car's body body broke apart due to rust! it was an austin 1100!

  • another 1100 bites the dust thanks to PSI films!

  • Once was taken to court for having a radial and crossply tyre on the same axle on the back wheels of a mini..It was dangerous but got off because I showed the magistrates that a mini had no back axle...therefore they wer,nt on the same axle!!!

  • how fuckin scary is that guy driving the car?

  • Don't mix crossplys and radials...and don't sodding drive around a tight bend at 50 mph on a wet surface in a cheap mini...twonker.

  • It's not a mini, it's a 1968 Austin 1100!!

  • That one's a Morris.... same car anyway :)

  • Hey its a day out driving with Ronaldo

  • That's what happened to me!

  • Are crossplys still available?

  • Yep, they're still out there for people who need them or want complete originality for their classic car. Longstone Tyres have a big range.

  • Longstone! Dont remember that brand. Firestone Tyres - I remember them.

  • @Futurebobbers or are a poor student like me!

  • @northernsmile only in scotland !

  • was that frankkenstien

  • This is a classic. It's like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters.

  • This is still true though-specially on motorbikes where a lot of the cheaper bikes now hav tyre sizes that both crossplys and radials are produced in-but they tyres don't look so obviously different as in this film.

  • I thought that was Basil Fawlty in that car!

  • Loved the description, hilarious!

  • And at the end, half a second of Flintstones Hitler. :-)

  • There's one more reason to take a bus.

  • lewis hamilton was taught to drive by that guy

  • It sounds like Joss Ackland who played the South African diplomat in Lethal Weapon 2

  • Yes. I am sure you are right; it is Joss Ackland.

  • What a smash up! The moral of the story is, if you mix your tyres, your car will be dropped by a crane into a field.

  • I've seen that same car in "Fool for a Father" and "The Blunders" series, looks like it was very popular in the 70s

  • BMC 1100, it was Britain's biggest selling car through the 60s. So in the 70s when these films were made they could buy them dirt cheap and crash them I suppose.

  • It may have been a big seller, but it was the start of the end for BMC - to undercut Ford they apparently lost 10 quid on each one they made!

  • I can believe it. Ford has been run by accountants virtually since henry ford's day. BMC made the car first then worried about costing it afterwards, the mini also lost them money on every one sold, although the marina- considered by many to be one of their worst- was actually a profitable model

  • @Futurebobbers MY ol'man had a white one y'know..

  • @Futurebobbers They were horrendous rust buckets, so there were probably lots of scrappers around to wreck...

  • At 0:21 he looks like he's really enjoying himself.

  • Any ideas who provides the voiceover on this PIF, which incidentally is on Charley Says 2? At first, I thought it was Frank Windsor, but now I'm not certain.

  • It might still be Frank Windsor.

  • Its not Frank Windsor.

  • I just turned 40 and as part of my midlife crisis was trying to work out why I've been scared of zombies for absolutely years. Saw this, and now I remember. The vein in that rubber-faced freak's face at 18 seconds has been quietly poisoning my backbrain since childhood. Throbbing like a small power-tool beneath his dirty brown 70s slaphead. I'm so glad they dropped the car upside down with him in it but still wish it had burned a bit.

  • That vein does look a bit worrying doesnt it. Thank god i dont remember this PIF!

  • That's funny -when I took my bird out for a drive in my Morris Marina my dad said "son,, women and seamen dont mix,,so take care".....nuffin about the tyres tho'...still wonder what he meant by that..anyhow...

  • never seen full lenth version before though the fact that they clearly dropped the car upside down allways made me laugh.

  • is that The Elephant Man driving?

  • so so true radials should always be on the back because they mould and give most grip round corners

  • The dangers of driving with an unclipped monobrow.

  • lol..hilarious.

  • That was Basil Fawltys car wasn't it!!

  • lol, he had an estate version, last seen being bashed with a treebranch!

  • That scientist must have been making White Lightning cider in that lab! Mike S.

  • I remember this ad so well,............memories eh?

A bloke who worked in MICHELIN once told me why it is dangerous to mix tyres.....and i've forgotten..LOL

Classic P.I.F by the way. Thank you.

  • the tyres were fine but the driver looks like hes pissed

  • HA HA HA H AH A the look on that man's face is priceless..i can hardly type i am laughin that was great!.

  • i think it also helps avoid such accidents if you refrain from cornering at 60mph and try and control a skid rather than just covering your face with your hands!

  • that was my uncle,he was 1962 drift champion.

  • Obviously not in that one, thats a 69

  • Ha ha, I soooo remember that. Nice one!

  • Sir, I have been looking for this for ever. I salute you.

  • DVLA have no record of VWJ558F

  • It's upside down in that carpark

  • No its a 69 plate F reg

  • The makers of Public Information Films liked to used BMC 1100/1300's a lot.

  • crossplys are wild !!
