Two years on and I still haven't found an "instrumental" attempt any better than this one. I have heard a few undistorted instrumental versions of VLV on a few television shows, but they are hard to come-by. I am not sure whether the editors of these shows modify the song themselves and do it properly, or if they actually have a master copy of VLV with the vocal track excluded from the compilation.

Guitar Hero can do it, so why can't we?

@AlteranAnciote That's because we (the public) are ALWAYS given a copy only. Like you said, someone has the master version, but we get the copies. It's not to be cheap, but it's to save space. When they put it as MP3 format, they compress all the audio into one layer that we can't adjust without messing with the whole track. It's converted to fit more stuff on the CD provided or to put it as a smaller file in places such as iTunes (website).

I'm curious, how do you create an instrumental version using Audacity? I've recorded with this software but am unaware of how it might be used to separate out the instrumental from the vocals. I'd love to know how to do this as there are some Coldplay other songs for which I'd like to create instrumental versions. This song is so lovely, and the instrumental version with only the background vocals is a nice alternative version but I love hearing Chris singing it too! I can hear him faintly.

You must have Audacity 1.3 Unicode Beta. Then, you must have the MP3 file Viva La Vida. In Audacity, go to "Effect" and find the one that says "Vocal Remover". You don't have to do anything. All you have to do is put Ok. So that's how I did it.

Maybe it's grayed out because you're probably playing the song. Stop the song. You've got to put "select all" and then put vocal remover. Try.
