@youngfart40 Open overhead bins exist on very old planes before the 70s. The USSR was late as usual to the party with closed bins, which first arrived on the Tu-154 in 1969. ("New Western Cabin")
Back in the day, even the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 had the same unsafe open bins. But keep in mind, people in the 50s-70s did not carry 9 tons of luggage with them into the cabin, checked luggage was included with the price of a ticket. Instead, hats and coats would be up there.
I don't remember a flight from 1989 up to today in russia were luggage wasn't checked with the ticket. The worst case was where we had to carry our luggage on our own to the aircraft where it was loaded into the cargo bay. But this happend only one time!
Yes, Soviet Aeroflot sucked, because it was the only ride anywhere. However in a way, is it really the fault of Aeroflot for being so shoddy, or the system that kept them that way???
@MEATYOKERRable This is post soviet aeroflot of the 90s, even worse as it was being torn apart. Sure service sucks, but at least it was safe before 1991 as the planes were kept in proper maintenance. Now after 1991 everything decayed.
By 2001 and on the "babyflots" had mostly died off. There are not as many airlines as created in the chaotic split-up in 1993.
@drivojulianrobotnik Welcome to the "democracy" and "capitalism" we promised you!
Don't you love how Yeltsin let Goldman Sachs and Bank of England back up the U-Haul truck, clean out the miserable Soviet estate, then rape and loot everybody else? Believe me, Gorbachev and Yeltsin got their payoff after they left office.
I guess Putin is unable or unwilling to extricate Russia out from under the global banking mafia. Russia is bleeding money to the banksters the way Weimar Germany bled after WW1.
@InfiniteMushroom Do you actually believe all this bullshit you write? Russia does not prosper because it's people are obviously unable to properly use the resources that god has blessed them with, instead, the rich people are just decadent and not interested in the country moving forward. Luckily it seems that the little people are waking up, moving against criminals like Putin at last.
@naisi After rereading my comment, recalling how things went down in the Yeltsin era, my comments still stand.
HOWEVER, you ARE correct regarding Russia's inability to make best use of their resources. Rolling Stone columnist, PJ O'Rourke, had plenty to say about the chronic incompetence of Soviet life. THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE the naked robbery by New York - London vulture capitalists and their exacerbation of an already broken system.
Re Putin, he repaired much of the damage done by Yeltsin
@InfiniteMushroom Western capital firms may -to some very little extent- have contributed to this, but the main reason are the so called "Oligarchs" that robbed state property. Putin is their patron.
