PD JOnes, you're the last of the REAL horsemen. Don't let these pussy ass dudes say a thing against ya. When they've ridden HALF as many horses as you have we'll start to listen to their banter... You ought to teach YOGA as limber as you hacve gotten in your old age!!
PD just found you. Thank for taking the time to put these video together. All the other be asken YouTube to make us pay to watch. You have no nonsense way about you. Glad to have found you. Stacy Wi
mr pd, i have a 3 yr old mare she is really nice but she always has her ears pinned when im on her in the round pen. she used to take a saddle really well but one day, i wasnt there and my lil brother rode her and every since when i go to saddle her she snorts and blows at me and some times bucks but when i walk her out she stops and is normal, what do you think happened?
I like the way you think...short, sweet, to the point, and in a way the horse can understand...now that's training :) Do you always ride in a martingale though? Just curious...
@catfreak8008 Yes I always use a martingale when I'm in one of my ring chain bits & don't use them when I go to one of my chain gags. This is just stuff that has worked for me for a long time. Check out my web site.
PD are you still around? Miss your videos, it's very refreshing watching someone with some common sense and a no frills approach. I'm not a whole lot younger than you I'll bet and still try to get a few good colts started every year. I really enjoy seeing somebody get things done the good way.
I do the same thing. For the first several rides i let the horse go where ever it wants as long as its moving just to get a feel for someone on its back. I dont even ask it to go any faster then a walk until it willingly moves off and takes directions easily. Im also really over dramatic with the reins when directing at first too lol
Thank you, I appreciate it. Just start them easy & don't scare them or make them mad & your about there. Notice the ears on this nice colt, just up & alert & not mad about anything...Make learning fun for them!!
exactly. totally agree. thats basically how i learned so much about horses. i just payed attention to what they did and if they liked wat i was doing. and just let the training come naturally. teach em wat u know later. have fun.
For the first 60 days & really for the first year there are no boring circles or me really trying to "train" them, I just ride them around & go somewhere & the training takes care of it's self...
i dont think hes really interested in showing the horse where to go, since they are in a round pen and there isnt very far to go. im pretty sure that if i were on a horse that had only been ridden once in its entire life, the only thing i would be worried about would be actually staying on the horse. i wouldnt really give a shit about what i looked like. .
I agree, all that matters in the first few rides is that both horse and rider are relaxed and comfortable with each other. All the other stuff can come later on. So many good horses end up ruined or turned sour simply because they have too much asked of them too early. You do a fantastic job and I love watching all your videos! wish there was someone like you in australia!!
Thank you, I appreciate it. The first year or so I just ride colts colts around easy & let them have fun & get used to things. To many people are trying to "train" them every time they get on them. I just like to ride them & let the training take care of it's self.
sorry, but that is the false way to ride a horse. You are to hard with your hands and feets. Your seat is terrible. The horse don´t know what you want.
@kommunikationsanalys Sluggardy? Oh boy. You are an idiot. What the hell difference does it make if you wear spurs? He goes to bucking and you spur him a few times, and he thinks "Huh, when I bucked that was kind of unpleasant." You dont make him buck or show him how to buck you just do a little discipline. Go back to your Parelli- fall off like a sack of shit- bullshit and shut the hell up.
Oh, I see.. I just was looking at their online catalog and realized that they were foundation as well. I must have just caught your words wrong. Thanks anyways!
No, for 10 years I got most of them from the MJ ranch in Canada & the the fuel prices & money exchange just made it not workable & have just been buying weanlings that I liked at a couple sales each fall.
I hope you folks put more video's of your colts up on here..I enjoy seeing colts that are started right & on their way to being useful critters for the next 20 years or so...
From me! I have a video on here that shows how & why they work. They are $20+$5 shipping. P D Jones, 300 5th st, Nora,NE 68961. I also take Paypal. I'll send my email & phone number in a PM if you need anymore info. I think you will find them very useful.
P.D. it's good to see somebody else with a few years under their hat still having that enthusiasm for the young horses. I appreciate your no nonense way of going. Nothing glitzy, no big marketing campaign, just good solid horsemanship. I'd sure enough feel pretty good buying a colt from you. Lookin forward to seein more from ya. Al...Smokin P ranch
Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I enjoy working with colts & like to pass on some of the things I've learned over the years to make things easier on the colts & those that handle them.
Great information on your videos, I have a 6 year old quarter horse I am soon to break in to saddle but im told she has bucked one time when the first owners tryed to saddle her. So any advice?
Oh gosh, Not a lot of room to tell much on here but if you don't have quite a bit of experience I think maybe you should think about getting some professional help starting a 6 yr old that has been been known to buck. That's why I buy colts right off the mares & handle them myself till it's time to ride them. Hopefully I haven't taught them any bad stuff & they are just pretty easy to get along with.
Thanks for the advice, I was hoping to start her myself. I havent done this before but she is easy going and I can now lead her, pick all feet up and go to her in the paddock without haltering her and brush her and handle her all over, So maybe its worth a go. I will start slowly. I did get a saddle on her a few days ago she fussed a bit then walked around quiet. If she gets difficult I will look into a Professional. I will look forward to more of your videos Thanks for all your great work .
He's a nice colt, if you just handle them right from the first day you start to halter break them it set's them up for the rest of their lives. I just do the things I do in my colt handling videos. It's easy, not complicated & it works..Thanks for your comment.
I really like this colt. Again, if I had time, land and money I would buy him off you lol. I think he's going to be a good ranch horse. Could probably do anything.
HA...Well by God I can still get on um!! (sorta) I'd guess he might be around 14HH & might end up around 15.....I sure hope no taller..I still just love putting these first few rides on them, they are easy. It's the next few hundred hours to make a good one that is hard onan old man!!
Sorry about the audio on this. I wasn't going to put it on here but I really like this colt & will try to follow up with more as he progresses. But I guess Ya can never do the 2nd ride again so I put it on here...

@wdeneaful Sorry, unless I was there to see it anything I would say is just some kind of wild guess & that wouldn't be much help.

I had no idea my feets & ass were so bad. Perhaps you could show how it's done on your 2nd ride on a colt
pdj47 2 years ago
You ride with spurs on a 2 yr old colt. That is dangerous and sluggardy. You are a free- time rider?
kommunikationsanalys 2 years ago
kommunikationsanalys
Maybe you don't have the education to ride with spurs, there only harsh when ridden by a bad rider.
