The couple don't have to be both straight and attracted to each other to be able to pull off the emotion required for Rumba. The close relationship that 2 dance partners have with each other is enough. They art is translating that into the dance.

It's like saying that a gay actor can't portray a good heterosexual love, or a straight actor can't pull off being in love with a man. They draw up on past experiences and feelings they've had.

i think another reason why they're great is because they were pioneers at a time when latin ballroom looked different, they changed the direction of latin dance and stood out amongst others.

All of your dancers dance very sophisticated routine. There are a lot of eye candies. But are they ready dancing?  For example, a rumba romantic dance. The dancers you mentioned dance a fancy routine but are they romantic? I cannot judge their dancing but I do know that you do look at somebody in their eyes when you are romantic with them. Gaynor is a wonderful performer and they were pioneers in their time. However, dancing like that doesn't fly anymore. BTW, about looking at each other romanticly, did you notice that Donnie didn't even look at her when he leaded her to a fan.

can you explain to me what do you mean by "dancing like that doesn't fly anymore"? Of course, if you mean that kind of dancing will not win competition then that maybe true. Judging is subjective. As for Donnie not looking, I think Donnie want to show they are romantically involved when they were not.

If you look at the video of them found in dancesportinfo and others from their competition times, their dancing very different compared to what it is nowadays. They dance seperate (they can also pretty much practice seperate) and then just go and dance together. They don't really feel each others' weight moving from foot to foot or at which part of the foot their partner's weight is on. This is all because at the time they danced, they didn't have this kind of "depth" in lead and follow.

I agree with you on most of these points. What I am saying is why the modern dancers dance like that. There maybe a lot of eye candy but are they dancing the dance? Remember that a chacha is fun and cheeky dance and rumba is romantic. Where is that feeling of the dance? Just b/c the current dancers dance like that make that "right"

It's because the feeling of gaining that connection is absolutely amazing. Alas, it also gives you chance to listen to your partner more and thus, create a way more balanced dancing. It's also natural for the body to create such connection and movement instead of working as seperate entitites. But really, check Slavik's and Karina's rumba or Bryan's CCC. Are they really missing that romantic connection and feeling or cheekiness? Passion?

They are dancing the dance and even they occasionally break it to portray raw real emotions (i.e. Maria Manusova in their world latin solo rumba). As I said, Gaynor is a wonderful performer. But I like to see the story and the effect of passion portrayed in the movement of the body. That is what dancing is about, no?

Essentially it was about push and pull of hand. Now people are using hip rotation and angels of body in relation to eachother to create a spring like tension between each other to create effortless speed (Bryan, Slavik, Matej, Franco, Maurizio, Stefano etc.). In comparison with the push&pull lead, this creates a lot more speed and also helps the dancers properly fill out the beats of music without looking "dead" in the body.

Keep in mind, I don't deny they were superior at their time, they simply were, but the dancing you see in this video will not make you into world quarter, semi or finals today. I am not disputing with you that D&G's routine is not as fancy as what is current today and they probably will not make even the semi. But what they do better is to express the

What a lovely performance, so thrilling, full of passion, elegant figures en perfect movements with her lovely long legs en charming symplicity. her expressive hands en gestures. I hardly could finish seeing them gone. Rumba is a dance of love and passion and this is what it should be as I as dancer can imagine. Donny is doing very sensitive as well, very, very pleasing.

I don't have the talent to dance competitively but I am a very dedicated fan and had darn great teachers that taught me the basic technique. I just enjoy watching GREAT dancing. And Donnie & Gaynor and the Hilton's are the best I had seen.

well, in our society where looking young and beautiful is an obsession, they are trying to have that "look". IMO, they failed on that. But when I look at them, I'm look at their dancing. Wow, they are in a class by their own. I look at Joanna and Michal, they are very athletic and technically brilliant, but they lack the "emotion" that make rumba a romantic dance.
