  • I can't understand, who the hell is this, James or Kirk?!!! I think James, the rhythm part seems like its...but i don't know exactly...

  • @lucretiam Both, James has more treble on this album, while Kirk has more bass and mids. This is because Kirk uses an Ibanez Tube Screamer on the solos, which boosts the treble, and makes it sound more "raw". That's why james' solo on Master of Puppets sounds a bit overloaded; because he has both his treble (which is quite a lot on a Mesa Boogie) and the Tube Screamer treble. Sorry it's a bit long and confusing, but that's my answer. :D

  • @nicobal666 Don't worry, i understood, thank you man!

  • wtf happens @ 1:27 ? A third guitar comes in?

  • @FlyingVSnow 8 guitars in total bro, that's how you can get that tone, all of them played by Hetfield, except for the solos of course

  • This riff still echoes as loud as it did back in '86.

  • HOW DO THEY GET THAT TONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @oT0MJHo FUcking mesa boogie mark IIC+

  • hahaha do you hear all those punch ins during the solo??

  • Jaymez' rhythm is fucking bulletproof.

  • 1 person obviously suffered too much battery.

  • This should make it clearer to all the people who play the bridge riff wrong.

  • Listen to this is 2x speed haha.

  • Riff at 3:00 gives me a fucking orgasm!

  • that lead tone <3

  • This song is probably the best song to master the right hand palm muting.

  • one person could not do the acoustic opening as amazing as metallica plays it

  • James' hair looks like spaghetti.

  • That is the true metallica line up right there that picture!!!

  • this track is great for those who want to play this on guitar like i do :D

  • WOW There's A GODS

  • "this riff will kick ass for all eternity"

lol fuckin A man. Fuckin A.

  • @Doomzdayxx this song will kick eternity's ass

  • Can you make one with Orion guitar only?

  • great times....for one day I'd love to go back.

    I've always loved 3:16 to 3:50...especially 3:41 on...

  • great times....for one day I'd love to go back.

  • Wow I never really realized solos could be so sloppy in pro recording, I can stop dreading my recordings now.......

  • 3:47 - 3:51 , blows my mind every time

  • Awesome! Crazy after so much time hearing this again... lots of odd time signatures, 7/8 riffs... when I was younger I couldn't understand why I never got the tempo of Master of Puppets and Justice albuns.. that was metallica at its top complexity

  • I was so madafuking traumatized with the tone at 0:41 - 1:05 since I was a little kid and now that riff right after is blowing my ass!

  • They all wear leather jackets exept for cliff on this picture. It makes him stand out a bit, because of his originality.

  • 2:06 - 2:12 Cheesy solo break , then kickass rythm guitar kicking in lol

  • No one could ever , EVER play this as brutally as james did.

this riff will kick ass for all eternity

  • @Greenman422

If I added more notes and scraped the hell out of the chords I definitely could.

  • It's surprizing how much reverb they used here...

  • LoLz look at james fingers, hes making a heart =D S2

  • kirk hammet is not the best player in the world and he's not even close to that... but he has something better, he had composed the best solo's in history of thrash, like one or master of puppets... that's why he's my favourite guitar player

  • @Scaar81 your right finally someone who gets my point technical skill and being able to play better than anyone really means nothing unless you can compose great solos and riffs which is what kirk is great at he can improvise on the spot and ALL his solos fit EVERY song

  • @mmim4 that's why my favourite solos are the most of kirk, like the unforgiven, one, master of puppets, dyers eve and more... and that's exactly metallica, you can easily notice the difference between metallica and other bands

  • I was alive but was very young around this time. I wonder what it would of been like hearing something amazing and new like this blasting out of the radio from nowhere. I don't hear anything new today that a stands a chance of being remembered even in a few years. This stuff is timeless.

  • @Doomzdayxx yes... today i hear bands like violator, evile, municipal waste, gama bomb, bonded by blood... but there's nothing like those days, and of course, you can't hear that on the radio... thank you internet !

  • @Scaar81 oh man don't get me started on evile. I saw those guys a few months back. FUCKING awesome

  • the solo is just...... FUCKING INSANE!!! =D

  • hell yeah!

  • 0:41 <3

  • Damn that's a shit load of guitar tracks

  • dude, he's kirk hammett - he can do everything

  • @GiampaoloPazzini7 ... Kirk just recorded solos since kill em all to black album, all riffs is pure Hetfield.

  • @TheLuis1283 Nope, I read somewhere that he wrote and contributed riffs since the mid 1980s. Plus, you can distinguish two guitars, one with more treble (for the rhythm), and one with more bass and mid (leaving the treble for the Tube Screamer which kirk uses for the solos, which boosts the treble and uses "crunch") That's why James' solo in Master of Puppets sounds a bit overloaded with treble

  • How does he do that on 3:26-3:27?

  • @InstantBollocks That's just a bend, dude. But It's huuge

  • god domn that`s good...

  • A site you will definitely find useful - clearly not spam, by the way

A collection of more than 700 original studio guitar, drum, bass and other tracks just like this one, all available for free download.

    tracklibraryOblogspotOcom

    (replace "O" with ".")

  • @chansey13795 'cause he loves us all :D

  • you can tell thet layered multiple guitars in the studio to fatten the tone.

  • the structure of this song is the same a fight fire with fire

  • i wanna hear the rhythm part under kirks section at 3:00

  • Kirk's use of wah is just legendary.

  • Just think.. James sings at the same time too. One of a kind.

  • @omnipotent1995 That part sounds a bit like the tone from Justice ....

  • @sergiudrummer you meen justice sounds like the tone of master

  • this is so much fun to play on real guitar. hell, even in guitar hero its fun

  • the albulm of master of puppets can give any metalhead a metalgasm everytime they listen to it.

  • James Hetfield is god, he is a guitar beast

  • a big part of metallicas sucess is clearly their guitar tone

  • The riff from 3:51-4:00 fuckin' kills...

  • Kirk looks like a little kid there XD

  • SAVAGE RIFFERY.

  • best album of history

  • So much talented guys. This is the best band ever!

  • what damn triplets are you talking bout? that are no triplets. it is eighth-sixteenth-sixteenth gallop. and yeah, that part is played alternate picking, for chords i am not sure, i play them downstroke (so i play alternate/dowstroke mix), but in kirks guitar lessons where he shows battery riff you can clearly see he plays chords alternate. dunno. but believe me, eighths on 220-230 bpm is probably fastest you can play with downstroke

  • when i heard the lick

    i jizzed in my pants!!

  • fuck sakes! BRUTAL RIFF!

  • lol 2:08

  • No one i said no one can ever beat metallica

this veterans will kick your motherfucking Ass as you can hear

  • most of metallica's riffs are down pick but definatly not this one

  • ya you might have to be retarded to believe this is all down picked

  • tttra tttra tarara tttra tttra tarara-ra...BATTERY!!! this riff fuckin' rocks!!!

  • Het's sound on this album was brilliant..it's more of a "crunch" than a "distortion", which I prefer.....soooo much low end/balls!

  • best riff of metallica.....jamezzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!

  • What a riff!!!

    so aggression..Best album

  • Tha solo reminds me of Joe Satriani

  • Satriani thought Kirk, so they're gonna have to sound at least a little similar.

  • SAVAGE RIFFERY.

  • that slide at 3:50 is so sickkkkkkkkkkkk

  • yeah but the triplet gallop is tremlo picked. if you think otherwise you must be an idiot

  • Well, bowiefan is correct. It's not tremolo picked. It's just upstroked on every 2nd 16th note of each gallop.

  • yes ok wich requiers the technique tremolo picking, but bowiefan implicates that everything they play is downpicked. wich is stupid.

  • Or alternate picking...

  • So is Master of Puppets

  • well if your theory on every metallica song being downpicked was correct, then whiplash was all downpicked? not.

but yes, it is hetfields to pick extremely fast. but not battery fast.

  • dyers eve and fight fire with fire riffs arent downpicked only. those are obviously alternate picking

  • of course

  • @vzlarocker i was replying to bowiefan441970 because he said all of Metallica's riffs are down picked only which is obviously not true.

  • How the hell can anybody down pick Fight fire with fire? thats insane. Master of puppets is, but Battery??? yea right.

  • @metallifreak23 Those triplets here are alternate picking, it's physically IMPOSSIBLE to downpick them. MOP - there are no triplets in that song, it's downpicked all the way. FFWF is alternate picking also.

  • @stefan90210 i agree but who the hell would EVER think FFWF would be downpicked thats impossible

  • @stefan90210 Agreed, James' alternate picking is just as bad ass as his downpicking

  • Dyers Eve.

    Disposable Heroes.

    Fight Fire.

    One.

    Please, smoke more crack.

  • Amazed at how crisp these guitars sound. Not to mention the awesome tone.

  • Agreed. I've wanted that tone for so long.

  • Only if the Metallica in this picture were still here.

  • @Thunderfucku2 ahhh fuck cliff burton

  • K,thanks guys below me.

  • Comment removed

  • not the triplets no way u can downpick all of those triplets in the main riff

  • Comment removed

  • ynah i think ur thinking about master of puppets ,thats all downpicking u think u can downpick triplets in the main riff no one can do that

  • that's retarded , the triplet gallop is in alternate picking, just watch the live videos

  • looks like there ´s 3 guitar players in it

  • (Left to right) Kirk (lead) James (vocal/rythm) Lars (drums) Cliff (Bass player who was most inspirational, died in 1986)

  • i miss this metallica :(

  • 2:09 cool kirk

  • @nicopanadero123 Yeah I love how he goes straight back into the riff after a little bit of soloing

  • This is the holy grail of guitar tones. Take it in people cause there will never be an album as Good as puppets. Hail Metallica!

  • @Blacksabbith102

    Ride the Lightning.

  • @Blacksabbith102 except RTL is better than MOP :)

  • @rocafella142 I think that they are just as good. It's a matter of opinion.

  • @rocafella142 RTL had escape which is not strong enough

MoP has only strong songs so it wins slightly(: BUT! RTL is second of course:P

  • @rgt4all are you kidding escape is a good song....nearly all metallica fanatics agree that RTL is the best while the media say MoP and Black album.

  • @rocafella142 James voice is the best in RTL that for sure

but if you listen ride the lightning there's just taht on song that shouldve been on another album still a good song but no crackin song

Master is 1 powerful album without any weak points

black album? nah disagree with the media at that point:P though it has some strong songs.

but if you like Ride the best,

u should its a fuckin great album(:

    MetallicA 4 life\m/

  • @rgt4all Hell yea \m/...but I will admit my favorite Metallcia song is on MoP...Battery ftw.

  • @rocafella142 mine dyers eve but battery is really really great(:

  • @Blacksabbith102 I think And Justice For all is better than Master of Puppets, not just musically, but also the guitar tone. Listen to the guitar track for Shortest Straw and Dyers Eve and you will hear what I;m talking about. AJFA is closer to the "holy grail" guitar tone.

  • This is called BRUTAL RIFFAGE!!!

  • @KrisiunDark thats correct

  • Im aware of that. They also covered Iron madien, Rainbow, Pantera, Muse and others too. But if you know anything about Portnoy and really listen to his playing you can hear Neil Pearts influence in his playing. But you might be a drummer so you wouldn't notice. No offense.

  • I believe they only covered Maiden, Pink floyd and metallica entire albums at one time... but ne way, yea they have been influenced by many bands, incluiding rush

  • Ok I saw the post that CCstunna put up about Dream Theater being absolute fan boys of Metallica. They are fans, its known that Mike Portnoy listened to a lof of their stuff and liked Lars' earlier playing but they were more influenced by rush. You can definitely hear it on their new album BC&SL album on the songs The best of times and the first couple and last several minutes of Count of Tuscany. You information is a little inaccurate.

  • Your information might be a little inaccurate but Dream Theater has covered the entire Master Of Puppets album from start to finish in a concert... As a tribute and also recognizing Metallicas influence.

  • what's up with lars' stache!?

  • whats up with kirk with no stache?! haha jkjk

  • MCM probably more sexually comfortable with van canto's cover ?

  • im not gonna lie (first i like there music im not a hater so i dont need all the bullshit im gonna get from this shit n u youtube bitches with nerd rage rofl) but they look stupid as shit in that pic seriously lol

  • when Sebastian Bach bought Kill 'Em All, he thought "these are the ulgliest humans I have ever seen - I must own this"

  • man kirk should have practised a lil bit more xD

  • even practice wouldnt help that sorry motherfucker

  • I cant get over the fucking tone! It's absolutely insane! They are so incredible! Not to mention how helpful this was to a student of Kirk Hammett's guitar playing.Metallica fucking rule! i don't care what people say, i listen to Metallica every day and i fucking love them and always will.Death Magnetic is fucking awesome, the best metal release of the last decade from the greatest metal band of the last century!

  • splitspades11, if you were a girl i wud marry you.

  • thanks man.ahahahaha!that's kinda gay!

  • yeh metallica's great and all but Kirk is NOT that great of a guitarist at all. like the last run in the solo for this song was a complete mistake on his part and he has tons of mistakes in the ride the lightning solo.

yeh hes good but he cant play with ppl like Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian, or Kerry King

  • You really have no fucking idea what your talking about! If you knew anything about "guitar" then you would except Kirk for what he is!Experienced musicians know that it's not just about how many scales you know, but how much feeling you give the instrument and how much feeling is intern expressed when the song is taken in as a whole! Kirk is incredible and you bad mouthing him just shows your lack of knowledge in this field!Kirk could shred the shit out of your ass any day!

  • Here comes the "OMFG HE HAS FEELING!!!11!11!" argument. Almost every good Thrash guitarist has feeling in his playing.

Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine, Jeff Hanneman to name a few, all of them play with feeling.

Metallica is a good band, but Kirk is very overrated. He's just average.

    AVERFUCKINGAGE, GET OVER IT.

  • Your comment is stupid. It has no proof that Kirk is good, you didn't prooved me wrong.

Bur if you want to talk about my life so bad, it sure isn't on a Metallica video.

Prove me that Kirk is above average, prove me that success does not equal talent (e.g. Britney Spears is successful, I assume you love her, according to your logic).

Come on, I dare you, cum sucker.

  • Prove me that he's below average... What the fuck are you stupid? It's an opinion you can't prove it... That's why it's called an OPINION.

  • Talent is not subjective.

  • Yes it is because YOU think he's not good. I think he's the BEST. See... Prove me I'm wrong. You can't...

  • Just because he is in Metallica? Pfft. Most of his best solos were composed by Mustaine, anyway.

Kirk relies on wah wah for almost every solo to sound cool. He even made mistakes in this song! But also, I never said he's not good, learn to fucking read.

    AVERAGE =/= NOT GOOD

  • Good > Average. I said that you said he wasn't good... Therefore he's average.

Mustaine wrote the four horseman and call of ktulu THAT'S IT.

  • "You don't understand the meaning of "not good". Not good takes off good. Let's there's good bad and wrost, not good leaves you with either bad or worst. Get it?"

    What?

olol the almighty wikipedia, i'm very intelligent now

  • So I'm the one that's fucking stupid even though:

    1) You didn't proove me wrong when I said Kirk uses Wah Wah for every solo to sound cool.

    2) You didn't talk about the mistakes he did on this guitar track.

    3) Your meaning of not good was incoherent bullshit.

    4) w w w . metallicaworld . c o . u k / dave_mustaine . h t m

    Allow me to quote:

"Dave Mustaine (lead guitar) toured with the band, co-wrote several songs which were later featured on the albums "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride The Lightning"

  • Then I guess you don't have anything to say about Kirk anymore.

    Therefore, he is still average.

  • Look, I never said Kirk was a bad guitarist. I do think he's average, though. Why? Does he sound original? No. A lot of guitar players sound like Kirk. The strong point about Metallica are riffs written by James Hetfield and the basslines by Cliff Burton, the solos are unmemorable apart for one or two.

  • yea i agree i mean most metallica riffs just wanna make u kill something well off the 1st 4 and mabey death magnetic but i mean i loved the bass line too james and cliff were the one behind the music
