This is one of the best moments in the musical. Also the confrontation between Valjean and Javert was so intense that the subtitles forgot what they were supposed to be doing for part of it (6:48).
Is all the death necessary? Well, it IS Les Miserables... not Les Slightly Unhappy. And if nothing else gets me, Enjolras laying over the flag at the front of the barricade does it every danged time.
@kharperci : Honestly, it's really touching in the book. It's one of the few books that made me cry. I understand the musical has time constraints and everything, and I love the orchestral part, but I think all of them dying all at once kind of plays down the dramatic aspects of the book. Yes, they all still die, but that's what the lower classes' life was condemned to back then (I really hope I'm not rambling. I have a head cold, and I tend to ramble when I'm sick, so, sorry :))
this bit always breaks my heart seeing that they all died, when i did it with my theatre group all my friends and my boyfriend were students and i almost criend every night

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember, doesn't he throw himself into the river in the book?

@themusettes Because Victor Hugo liked killing off practically everyone in his novels.
