The song was written by Don Raye and Hughie Prince, and was recorded at Decca's Hollywood studios on January 2, 1941, nearly a year before the United States entered World War II but after the start of a peacetime draft to expand the armed forces in anticipation of American involvement.
15 and proud to say that I LOVE this song and many other 40s swing, big band, and jazz. -3 another example of a great song from about the same era is "Sing Sing Sing" by Benny Goodman.
@CelloChick14 The song was written and first sung by Louis Prima & his New Orleans Boys, Benny Goodman did not write it. It was recorded on 78rpm in 1935 and sounded nothing like the Goodman arrangement when he performed it at the January, 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. Goodman's arrangement was much faster and was about 9 minutes long. Prima's original version was about 3 minutes.
sometimes i had the same feeling, BUT then i remember, that i can watch this, and other great stuff, again and again! The peoples of past periods woud stunning, what for enjoyable advantages we have today. ;-)

I am a baby boomer but I appreciate the music of my parents who are sadly no longer on this earth. I bought them tickets to see the Andrews sisters on Broadway in "over there' in the 70's and they loved it
Rofl, as if being patriotic in anyway reflects someone's talent. You don't have to perform for our troops in order to be a respected or good singer or entertainer.
im only 15.. and I just found out about this song toight.. and I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it.... :) r.i.p. Andrew sisters :)( well 2 of them)
By 1942, the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) sent 16-inch, 33 rpm vinyl transcription discs to the troops, mostly radio shows with the commercials edited out.
The V-Disc project actually began in June 1941, six months before the United States' involvement in World War II, when Captain Howard Bronson was assigned to the Army's Recreation and Welfare Section as a musical advisor. Bronson suggested the troops might appreciate a series of records featuring military band music, inspirational records that could motivate soldiers and improve morale.
V-Disc was a record label produced during the World War II era by special arrangement between the United States government and various private U.S. record companies. The records were produced for use of United States military personnel overseas. Many popular singers, big bands and orchestras of the era recorded special V-Disc records. These 12-inch, 78 rpm gramophone recordings were created between 1943 and 1949. The "V" stands for "Victory".
@caballoalizeero According to jasonseaman1: The Andrews Sisters introduced the song in the 1941 Abbott and Costello film "Buck Privates", which was in production when they made the record.
My uncle Bob had a picture hanging of the three of them and him from one of the Pacific Islands during WW2. He also had three Japanese Swords, and 2 pistols. He survived the entire war from Guadalcanal, to Okinawa without a single scratch. According to him, "anyman who is not scard in combat is lying or dead"
@Kelsie154 Me too. I know them because they've done some songs for Disney. (like "Little Toot" for example.) I like them much more then anything in this generation of music.

i think Keri Hilson, Katy Perry, and the woman from Sugarland did a really good job paying tribute to this song on "Salute the Troops" well at least i thought so >.>
@soxmonki Well ... yeah, I guess so ... but if you consider the rationing -- food, gas, rubber, nylon, etc. -- that everyone had to live with in the U.S. at the time, plus all the men (and women) "over there" who might not come back alive ... Not so sure it would be so great to revisit. Jes' sayin' ....

I'm a Boswell Sister fan myself. This song was familiar to me well before Bette Midler version. The video however is not from the Abbott and Costello movie. I started welling up like it was the ambush scene in the close of Gunga Din. Good thing few youtubes make me cry.
These three gals were very patriotic--unlike most of today's singers and entertainers. During WWII they often visited our troops in theater--unlike most of today's singers and entertainers. And they can REALLY sing and perform--unlike most of today's singers and entertainers. God bless the Andrew Sisters!
@caseygblake These 3 wonderful, amazing & truly patriotic ladies were my inspiration for singing harmony as they were my 1st exposure to said style of singing. I am honored just to hear them sing. IMHO, they are the best female trio to date!!! God blessed us WITH them! I miss them so.
@caseygblake Unfair comment. Very unfair. I work for Armed Forces Entertainment. We sent 191 talented, volunteer bands and performers this year alone to Iraq and Afghanistan. We are not affiliated with the USO, who sent TWICE as many acts who volunteered their time and talent this year as well. This year. While it is fine to applaud the Andrew Sisters, it is a disservice to denigrate the efforts of today's talented performers who do their patriotic best to entertain our troops.
@mr39jeffy Sorry if I wasn't clear...I meant Hollywood entertainers and celebs. Thanks to your fine efforts there are many great bands and performers who have gone overseas to entertain the troops and are much appreciated! Unfortunately 95%+ of the folks in Hollywood would never ever consider entertaining our troops--anywhere. With the exception of Gary Sinise, I can't think of a single one. If you know of any others, please post.
@caseygblake With respect, still unfair: Number one, I am a huge fan of the Andrews Sisters, who in fact, never went overseas. That doesn't detract from their efforts, of course. But here is only a partial list of what you might refer to as "Hollywood celebs" who volunteered their time and talent for our cause alone in the past five years: Matt Damon Julia Roberts Brad Pitt George Clooney Jennifer Lopez Robin Williams Drew Carey The USO, a larger organization, can boast many others. Best!
I was just watching and old Abbott and Costello movie,Buck Privates tonight. It made me realize some thing that is VERY important that has been forgotten. Duty, Honor, and Country!
They are doing a short film showing how they record a show for troops on the front lines that entertainers couldn't be taken to because of the danger. The recording would be sent off and be driven around to outposts that the touring shows couldn't get into during the war. It was a way to remind the guys of a little bit of home.
Absolutely incredible. Too bad no present-day singers can sing live like this. It seems that just about anyone can record an album, these days. It took real talent back then. These girls are amazing and outstanding. :)
What spirit today ? it's everyone for themselves sadly. They had talent then because they didnt rely on technology and instant success like we have today. Bring back the 40s !
@kassandrasduplex Oh, hell, yes! It was the last time that nearly all Americans were united on a thing. It's why you really don't want to piss off the Americans..But, I guess you're right; it's going to take quite a bit to get that kind of spirit again..
I performed this song in my school performance for music and dance and drama and art (theyre all put together into something called Exploratory Arts, and we have a performance every year) and When I performed with my group, we were louder and happier than everyone else at the show. I went up to say my line, and being the school celebrity I am, EVERYONE cheered for me. It took about five minutes to wait for them to shut up. thanks to this song, Im famous at my school. Thank you, Andrews Sisters.
I adore the Andrew Sisters,Elvis and Beatles etc but I dont see why on utube everyone has to write comments comparing them to disney stars today such as JB and MC,I realise that they have nothing on the era before 2000 but I mean have any of you heard the crap that goes on the radio 2day? computerized voices all mixed & mashed until all you hear in a thumping beat and some1 rapping over it making no sense,..just my opinion but no need to make fun of JB&MC cause they attract a different audience
Btw im 14 and pretty much love ALL types of music and have grown up listening to the likes of The Andrew Sisters, Elvis, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder , Elvis Costello and sevral more AMAZING artists so please dont say I dont know what im talking about because im pretty sure I do haha xo
Man, these girls ROCK! Patty (the one in the middle?) looks like she's about to take off like a rocket. I bet she rocked as hard elsewhere as well! LOL Jeez, so sexy and still wearing all them clothes and not using profanity! Yow-Za!!!
@Invictus2091 , I'm 43 yrs old and I like the Andrew sisters they are great singers.. the first time I heared them was when I was in high school in the 1980's. in a movie they co-stared with Abbott and Costello called , Buck Privates, (1941). Abbott and Costello are my favorite comedy team loved their movies.
It's too bad they didn't get along very well and fought amongst themselves constantly. They ended up not speaking to each other and didn't go to each other's funerals.
@BigRedMcCool Actually there are many groups that can come close to this, and may even exceed (without pitch correction) but (and this is a big but)...
The general population are not the least bit interested in the admiration of talent these days. And if you don't believe me, listen to anything (and I mean anything) that falls under the category of Hip Hop, Rap or Urban. One could train an elephant to mimic that garbage. Requires absolutely no talent at all yet earns billions.
@BigRedMcCool How true BigRedMcCool,"The Andrews Sisters became the best-selling female vocal group in the history of popular music, setting records that remain unsurpassed to this day:
The Andrews Sisters had more chart-topping hits than Elvis or The Beatles. The only reason that isn't acknowledged more often is that they pre-dated the Billboard Charts.
that isnt actually true. they had more top tens and charted hits than the beatles and elvis but so did a few others. they didnt pre date billboard either but they did pre date the hot 100 which is why they arent acknowledged as much as they should be.
im not not being picky or anything btw :). just stating facts.
I just love the comment that C2apostle made about his 70 year old mother saying the Andrew Sisters were before her time. It is so funny, but also sad that so much time has passed since they were so popular....but I love their music , as old as it is!!
This is the generation that will always sooo totally have my respect ... my grandparents' generation ... they went through so much (ie - Depression) but they say stf what ... and pulled themselves up with their bootstraps ... and we have the US as we know of it today!
God they were ugly

They fell out and didn't go to each others funerals? i didn't know that - thats depressing.
mikenotts01 2 years ago
It's too bad they didn't get along very well and fought amongst themselves constantly. They ended up not speaking to each other and didn't go to each other's funerals.

really thats a shame
hoolahoop75 2 years ago
Well, they couldn't have possibly made it to each other's funerals...maybe one could have.lol But yes, if that is true, that is very sad.
kenaco2009 2 years ago 3
Well, if no one comes to my funeral, I sure as hell ain't going to anyone else's.
And yes, these ladies sing beautifully.

No singer or group of singers today can even come close to this!
BigRedMcCool 2 years ago 92
@BigRedMcCool Actually there are many groups that can come close to this, and may even exceed (without pitch correction) but (and this is a big but)...
The general population are not the least bit interested in the admiration of talent these days. And if you don't believe me, listen to anything (and I mean anything) that falls under the category of Hip Hop, Rap or Urban. One could train an elephant to mimic that garbage. Requires absolutely no talent at all yet earns billions.
amoskowitz0103 1 year ago
@BigRedMcCool They could but people have low standards these days.

The Andrews Sisters had more chart-topping hits than Elvis or The Beatles. The only reason that isn't acknowledged more often is that they pre-dated the Billboard Charts.
Badgersprite 2 years ago 2
that isnt actually true. they had more top tens and charted hits than the beatles and elvis but so did a few others. they didnt pre date billboard either but they did pre date the hot 100 which is why they arent acknowledged as much as they should be.
im not not being picky or anything btw :). just stating facts.
the1musiclad 2 years ago 4
They also were only famous in the USA, contrary to Elvis and The Beatles, who had international success.

I just love the comment that C2apostle made about his 70 year old mother saying the Andrew Sisters were before her time. It is so funny, but also sad that so much time has passed since they were so popular....but I love their music , as old as it is!!
