It's Johnny Bristol. The story is, that Diana was too tired for the session and Johnny was calling out these parts to get her into it and keep her energy up. Then, in the end they liked his part so much, they kept it. So, interesting story.
FOR THOSE OF YOU who remember this reunion special, you will notice that, while these three ladies are on stage, NOT ONCE are they mentioned as "Diana Ross and the Supremes
I remember when this special was telecast on NBC in May of 1983 - when Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong were to be reunited for this special, they were supposed to sing four of their hit tunes - at the time, Diana Ross was already signed to RCA Records and felt awkward about even being there at the special - spectators at the show claimed that she was acting more of a prima donna than when she was at Motown-
this evening was intended as a celebration of the legacy of motown and that is precisely what it was and is. it wasn't about the unsettled scores mary brought to the party. the supremes had their reunion anyway. ross and mr. gordy were also reunited after not having spoken to each other since ross' defection to rca for a then record-breaking 20 - 30 million dollar record deal. and michael jackson became the brightest star in the show business stratosphere.
I Love The Supremes but The Supremes are over. Mary Wilson is the only Supreme, who doesn't see the group as a stepping stone but rather, she see's it as a dream come true because she and her friends worked hard. Sure Mary has made her mistakes, but the bible clearly says if we fail to admit we have done wrong, than we delude ourselves. How many of you all can write a book and write about some of the darkest times in your life? Very few. Mary, I Love you. God bless!
I remember this on tv. Diana is simply Diana. She is elegant, beautiful, talented and the true Living Legend Diva that she is. The Supremes were and is the Original Diva Girl Groups. This is when Diana supposedly pushed Mary. It was good to see them all together again. They always said Someday We Will Be Together. Thanks for the post and the memories.
i don't have to defend motown. what motown achieved thru ross' success was absolutely without precedent or parallel and the legacy continues to this day worldwide. fortunately, the legacy of motown does not rest on who has negative feelings or who has bad things to say about motown. it rests on the music and the music is forever. imo, ross has never truly received the respect she is due for the success of not only the supremes but of motown as well. why? one word: jealousy.
Svgbaritone said if personal attacks start he will consider disabling the comments section. So out of respect for him I will no longer comment on this clip. Now it's not even about this clip anymore it's these personal attacks that are getting out of control. Some people just need to learn how to have a debate without insulting someone just because they disagree with them. I'll say one last time that I love ALL three original Supremes and I will continue to respect their legacy.
I appreciate that very much luvcam1975. We need to remember why we love these ladies and share that vs. viciously fighting as we all have our own opinions.
I just feel bitterweet about this clip, that this may be the best we'll ever have for a reunion.
I hold hope and would pay a lot to see them together again.
The question is, can we unite as fans, put our differences aside and hope the ladies can do the same, to give us the reunion we so much want.
There have been countless artist, musicians, and songwriters that have had major issues with Motown not just Mary. Mary is no GOD she is human and makes mistakes like every human does. I know how to have a discussion without throwing out personal attacks just because someone disagrees with me. You apparently don't.
Before you attack a person please have your facts straight first. I never said that this was the first time Mary had an issue with Motown. Also lets not act like Mary is the only person that had major serious issues with Motown. Now in terms of my knowledge of Motown, Mary and The Supremes in general I am very well informed. What your problem seems to be is if someone disagrees with you then you shoot out personal attacks.
what's silly is to think mary stood up for anything on this occasion. anyone who thinks this was the first time mary acted out knows very little about mary and her history with motown and the supremes. by this point ross and the motown brass were AT LEAST every bit as fed up with mary and her b.s. as she purports to have been with them. they just never bothered to run her down publicly the way she did them. it is so funny how mary's little fans think everybody's sh-- stinks except mary's.
if mary wanted to stand up for flo she should have done so in 1967 when she voted instead that it was in the best interest of the group as a whole to remove flo at that time.
apparently not for you, heartandoul22. same video clip. same vendetta against ross. same hopeless cause of trying to make mary out to be more important than she is.
the truth of the matter cannot be denied, h&s22. before you jumped out of the woodwork again on the attack, i had merely responded truthfully to another poster's comment about mary "standing up for flo": how can mary stand up for flo after flo is done and gone when mary was every bit as complicit as everyone else involved in flo's ouster from the supremes in 1967. besides, this clip isn't about mary. mary and her desparate bid for attention were only a very minor part of the evening.
Branchwater7, we are going into 2010 and you are still discussing on a daily matter, what happen in back in the 1960's. Everyone who dealt with Flo wish they could have done more for her, including Diane and Mary. We all make our mistakes and we all learn from them and ask for God's mercy to covers us. Have a happy holiday and let the past be the past.
many think diana hated flo but she didn't same for mary. flo disliked diana for reasons that are clear but she didn't hate her, she though diane was a talented person but disliked her because she though diana was out too get flo which in some ways i suppose was true. mary wanted flo in the supremes but flo was not happy, flo wanted everyone too have leads and have different songs but berry wasn't about too let that happen.
branchwater7 . . . I just visited this clip to leave a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CINDY BIRDSONG, and low-and-behold there is h&s22 still going on about poor mary . . . loved yoru reply.
@branchwater7 mary never said that. she was in the meeting and looked at flo but she turned away. flo was fed up with the way things were. she won'ted things too be equal like shareing leads but berry wanted diana to be a star.
Mary stood up for herself and let Ross know that this night was not all about her. So we can go back and forth for all eternity on who each of us feel was right or who tried to ruin this night. But it will solve nothing. What's done is done and it's past time that the fans let this silliness go.
I agree luvcam1975. I have read Mary's books, Diana's Book, The lost Supreme and am working on Where Did Our Love Go, the story of Motown.
All of the opinions vary, and it seems that this is a personal matter between Mary & Diane. I love all of the Supremes and wish things were better, but we can't change that and the fans/media only seem to seek out the catfights and negative press. It's hard to resolve old personal matters in the spotlight. I hope someday we do see them unite again!
Mary Truly f'ed up! Do you know how many entities would have loved to celebrate and FETE the Supremes? And how many times MARY could have accept lifetime achievement awards? This night stopped any chance of future Supremes performance. Yeah she made money off the book but a true performer wants to perform! It's art. Soul Train, BET, AMAs, KENNEDY CITY AWARDS etc etc. opportunities gone because she wanted to stake a claim that wasn't hers. Not only did she suffer but so do we as fans
Mary & Diana both are in the right to hit that stage and sing while strutting their stuff. They both paid their dues from the very beginning and made and continue to make Motown many many millions.
This performance was before Mary released her best selling book. Remember Mary exposed ugly truths about Motown just as she did on Diana. So it wasn't necessarily this night that pissed off Motown. But I do know on almost anything you see about The Supremes or Motown for that matter (including Motown's 40th anniversary special) Mary STILL is featured giving commentary on countless documentaries.
I am very proud of Mary Wilson. Her growth, her persistence and her strength and wisdom. I thank God for her and may God continue to bless you Mary in all of your efforts.
PS: I also read somewhere that James Jamerson had to buy a scalpers ticket just so he could sit in the audience!!!! Shame on you Mr. Gordy. The FUNK BROTHERS were Motown!!!!
marys seemingly efforts to B louder and upstage Diana are noble but could never touch Diana Ross--"everyone came back?" Made me think of Flo--May she rest in peace------this song is forever-No one can sing it like Diana Ross-
I protect Mary because I feel this level of hate and lies aimed at her is unjustified. I've said on many Youtube pages about the Supremes that I love them ALL. I don't feel people should be bashing Diana either. I love Diana for her contributions to the Supremes and for being Diana Ross but thats not to say she nor Mary are without their faults.
It's good you live them ALL, I don't. I only have one question, did you grow up in Detroit during the Motown days, and if you did you would have a different upon of Ms. Diana Ross. Friends that knew her would beg to differ with you...Diana would be called a "B" then and now. I don't see the argument about Mary, what did you do?
i have traveled all over the world including europe africa and latin america and everywhere ross is celebrated from small small villages to the most cosmopolitan cities like paris and milan. it is only in her own country that i have seen the level of misinformation and jealousy about ross' achievement and permance in the patheon of quintessential american stars.
your position is a perfectly sound one. i just find it ironic that it is only when mary comes in for the same bashing that ross haters on these sites subject ross' name to around the clock that the calls for civility come out. my comments about mary are comparable to comments made about ross on here for months and on a regular basis.
Why are there so many hateful comments about Mary Wilson? The Supremes were a fab group and gave joy to millions of fans. Celebrate the music they gave. I think all 3 of them are amazing in this video.
Do you know what happened during the recording of this special? This is cut. Only Berry Gordy and the exucutive producer have the uncut version of this performance. Mary wanted to ruin this.
come on, luvcam1975! no horse in the race??? not that serious to you????? then why the FOUR comments based on nothing except your need to protect mary the real "lost supreme"????
I have no horse in this race and I love Mary and Diana both. The two of them are not even fighting anymore it's usually their fans that like to keep the drama going. I would like to also add that just because SOME of you are mad at Mary don't make her out to be some broke poor untalented nobody. She has money and lives quite comfortably in Las Vegas.. I saw her condo on Entertainment Tonight a few years ago. Some of these comments about Mary are laughable...it's not that serious to me.
Alot of you hardcore Ross fans are just pissed because Mary was honest and told the truth about The Supremes story. Thats why Mary's book was a best seller and Diana's own book (that she herself wrote) was not. Diana's book got horrible reviews and was a huge disappointment for her just like The Return To Love tour was.
I too believe she is not making much for her concerts but don't act as if she is broke just because you dislike her. She was getting six figures back in the 80's for her royalties so I imagine it has been adjusted since then and she is getting more. So yes Diana is definately worth more but I'm not sure it's 200 mill. I love Diana too but I'm not gonna play Mary down only to build Diana up more.
performance??? this can hardly be called a performance by mary. a stunt or a childish cry for help would be more like it. this was the last time mary was invited back to motown.
I also heard that it was DIANA who said they should all wear black and white as a way of controlling everything and Mary just didn't want to be controlled anymore.
When you spend time and money in court battles for years...your not in a position to be there financially for anybody. Motown ripped a lot of their artist off and Mary was one that they almost seceeded at bankrupting. She is in a great place now financially but she had to fight like hell over her own money in court for years. She doesn't retain all rights to the name Supremes but she can still use it and she was able to still secure her money from the Supremes royalties.
I will not allow my love for Diana to dismiss the fact that she at times was lowdown and shady. People who say that Mary was not close to Flo are misinformed. There is actual audio of Flo on Youtube saying that Mary was there for her and visited her and her daughters often. Mary was having financial problems with Motown so she couldn't help Flo in that way. Mary spent enough time and money in court making sure Motown wouldn't rip her off.
True Supremes fans fell in love with all three not just one. Diana tried to do the reunion tour without Mary and Cindy and it was a huge failure and had to be cancelled due to half filled arenas. So when it comes to The Supremes MOST of the fans love all three not just Diana. If that wasn't the case Diana would've been able to carry the tour by herself.
Some of you write as if Mary is broke and has no other means to support herself. Remember she still does get royalties from all those Supreme records. She is also a best selling author and has made and still makes plenty of money off of her books. She still tours and does concert dates so that is also income for her. Diana has more money but by NO means is Mary Wilson broke.
I'll bet anything that Mary is broke and has been broke for some time. IF she is getting royalties from Motown, I'll bet they don't amount to much--and that's a big IF.Best selling author??!! She had that best seller how many years ago?It was ONE book. That money is long gone.Wasn't she getting royalties when Diana was lending her money?Tours and concerts? Ok, let's get real. She's not making much from those "tours and concerts" Oh, she's broke alright. Diana on the other hand is worth 200mill.
She is still getting her royalties because she never signed them away like Flo. You assume she has spent all the money she makes from her books. You don't know how much money she has made from them being bestsellers... nor do you know whats in her bank account. You forget that she has been selling her books (along with other mechandise) on her website for years. With the renewed interest in the Supremes due to the movie Dreamgirls sales have spiked for anything Supremes.
Diana Ross admirers need to realize that it's not "superficial" just smearing exaggerated exotic makeup on your face and wearing a sparkling gown that gets you respect. It's "hard" work to become a brand and something that sells. The attitude doesn't go far if it's not backed up with "real" talent. You don't get through life treating others like they are beneath you just because you see yourself as a diva. Diana is who she is because she had a talent that sold-the world "bought" her brand.
Diana Ross is a very fascinating person. Even in this footage you can see an evolution and a metamorphosis with her. She clearly in this footage looks like a part of a "unit"-3 girls all on "almost" equal footing and evolves and emerges front and foremost from the group into a superstar. This montage really conveys the path of life from starting out at the bottom to getting to the top. It expresses what we all want for ourselves in whatever we choose to do. She achieved it and we are amazed.
I think the problem with the "rabid" behavior of Diana Ross fans is that inside themselves they see a little of her behavior. They adore the bitchy successful diva style because it communicates "power" and control to them. The idea of an attractive personality barking orders at everyone and people capitulating and placating the "diva" is awesome to them. They want to emulate it and get that kind of fearsome automatic respect and entitlements. She is 1 of a kind and has paid a price for it.
I think that all Supremes performances should be put to rest except for performance clips. All of the Sups had their faults. Who cares?!! If you can't come together in love, stop bashing each other and let it go. I personally hated this performance because of the stupidity behind it. I love Mary, but where Flo was concerned, she was not always Flo's biggest supporter like she claims.
I actually met Mary Wilson back in the 80s and the weirdest thing was that she was wearing her hair just like Diana Ross and kept flicking it back like Ross.
She had this advance man and he told us to call her Miss Wilson (which we did not). It was surreal. And sad.
I think Mary has a nice voice that is smokier and huskier, but sexy in a different way from Diana's. She should have gone her own way though. I was at a fundraiser where she sang the Supreme songs and it was not right for her voice. People were running for the elevators.
Yes, that's. She's an asshole. She wanted to be in center. She's jealous of Diana and she wanted to show her that on this evening I think. She took over the song and wanted to call Gordy to the stage. She wore the red dress to stand out with all others.
mary is like the embarassing cousin who shows up at the family reunion drunk, late, and with so many pent-up emotional issues that all you can do is ignore her. that's what motown did and rightfully so. in the words of janet jackson: edit!
I thought it was real cool when Diana called Berry Gordy BLACK!!! Real cool nickname. I'm only 29 and my parents played the Motown Sound to me, love it now as well. I got an earring because I saw on of Marvin Gaye's Album cover with an earring in his ear. Still think he was the coolest man alive. Marvin Gaye, Denzel, Obama, and myself empitimize cool. Great tho, the Motown Machine.
In my opinion Mary upstaged Miss Ross for once - she came out in that red dress, sang better, and looked better - she should have done that 20 years earlier but she was too nice.
Mary is too punk to kick anyones a--; else she woulda done it a long time ago.
The agreement was that the women would wear blaco or white for the reunion. The only one who did was Cindy. Mary planned to upstage Diana that night and got shocked! Mary did look fab though.
Why would anyone get mad at Mary for doing what Diana did early on in their career going for her own . i'am sorry but Mary did not have to sing she owned the night just by walking on stage listen to the applause when she entered .Even Barry said that Dianas biggest threat was always Mary wilson in terms of competition, beauty, grace and talent. He even commented in his own book as such.
I love MJ so much. He was the best. He's in a better place. MJ loved Diane, and he and his brothers would play with Mary's adopted son, Willie. Years later MJ and Mary took a picture and she was so suprised when MJ asked her about her Willie.
Yes, I know those songs, mkrobinson95, but I still think that they were perceived differently than today's songs about sex. I mean 'get up, get up, get up, get up, let's make love tonight' differs a lot from today's 'yo, b***h, a** up face down' crap. I think it is also the misogynist content of today's songs, whereas songs of the 80's which dealt with that subject give the impression that the women addressed in the song were on a par with the men singing about them.
Since Michael died, I'm always wishing for a possibility to turn back time. The eighties were wonderful. All those wonderful, talented music artists. Everything was so classy. I'm sorry and I don't want to sound racist, but nowadays music made by Afro-Americans seems to be mostly about b****es and h*s or who has the most 'bling' and who is the biggest pimp or the biggest gangsta. I so miss the old days. When everything was classy and when people sang about sex it was subtle and not so blatant.
Real Music created and performed by African-Americans is not being promoted and most of the songs described in your post that are being promoted are enforced by the Caucasians who are the owners and executives running the labels that release these songs....the songs are being enforced by them because they market it to sell. Listen to Maxwell, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild and a massive array of African American Artists who sing real and beauitful music and have something constructive to sing.
What did i say!!!! this was in response to something that someone wrote on here, not towards the Supremes, i love the Supremes, that's what i came on here for....
your getting sensitive about the wrong thing and your commenting out of turn...MY comment was not targeted towards The Supremes at all...i can't think of any other reason why you came at me like that, because what i said about TODAYS Music in response to a comment on here is absolutely real and anyone who can appreciate real music will agree with me. i love the Supremes, especially Florence Ballard.
When I see Michael and Berry embrace I have to think about that movie about the Jacksons. In the scene in which Berry goes to Michael and asks him to perform with his brothers for the anniversary and Michael says that when he was little someone came up to Berry and him and asked Berry if Michael was his son and Michael then said to Berry that he would have liked it if Berry had said 'yes'. I think that Berry was more of a father to him then Joseph ever was.
It was nice to see Michael Jackson and Berry Gordy embrace. You could tell it was very heartfelt. As far as the Supremes reunion, wow, the segment was really edited. I hadn't seen this segment in years and reading about what had really taken place afterwards, looking at it now, you can't tell that that other stuff took place. Wonder what Flo would have made of all that?
You know this was suppose to have been a joyous occasion for all the Motown Stars but it is clear Mary Wilson came on stage to try and upstage Diana Ross. Mary knew prior to Diana leaving the Supremes she had never been the lead singer in the group that is a fact. Now for her to come on stage and try to pick up the lead in singing is just ludicrous. Mary stay on your cruise ship and continue to bring much joy to the passengers aboard. You can't change the past. Diana Ross will always Supreme.
Well according to Mary's book Diane apparently stopped singing and Mary picked up after her (STUPID thing to do I think onstage...if someone forgets the words, taking over makes it worse) but I dont know if what Mary wrote is true.
Diane forgot words before look at I Hear A Sypmhony on Mike Douglas I think she was really just trying to help.the Supremes where better before diana distanced herself from them even singing apart from them They looked so much better even on stage.
it just brings tears to my eyes to look at all those great legends and know that so many of them are now gone. there will never be another institution like that again, ever.
But da---------------rling the 'mud-slingin' is such a blast! :-) Gotham City sTrikes AgAiN! ROFLMAO! WOOO HOOO The cAt W.oman , the Penguin, the jOkeR! ha ha ha ...psycho!!!!!
doolie50 & branchwater7 - I've sent you both private msgs, but I want to say here that after reviewing the posts back & forth between us, I'm disappointed in myself. I love the Supremes, mainly just the original group + Cindy. They are all great & we have our favorites & that's fine. I'm just ashamed at the level of discourse and my part in it. We get heated up & defensive because we have strong feelings. I want to apologize for any insulting things I said to you personally & to Diana Ross.
mary is not anywhere near ross' level as either a businesswoman or an artist. in '81, ross made a record breaking independent deal with rca and set up her own music management, licensing. management and film production companies establishing a business model that provided a template for the likes of michael and janet, madonna, prince and oprah. ross has consistently demonstrated her excellent business sense in the sound management of her and her family's financial affairs, unlike mary.
who sings the male part of this song of someday we'll be together ? ive always wondered but never knew.. His voice is really nice..

the truth of the matter cannot be denied, h&s22. before you jumped out of the woodwork again on the attack, i had merely responded truthfully to another poster's comment about mary "standing up for flo": how can mary stand up for flo after flo is done and gone when mary was every bit as complicit as everyone else involved in flo's ouster from the supremes in 1967. besides, this clip isn't about mary. mary and her desparate bid for attention were only a very minor part of the evening.
branchwater7 2 years ago
Branchwater7, we are going into 2010 and you are still discussing on a daily matter, what happen in back in the 1960's. Everyone who dealt with Flo wish they could have done more for her, including Diane and Mary. We all make our mistakes and we all learn from them and ask for God's mercy to covers us. Have a happy holiday and let the past be the past.

@heartandsoul22 that's true.
many think diana hated flo but she didn't same for mary. flo disliked diana for reasons that are clear but she didn't hate her, she though diane was a talented person but disliked her because she though diana was out too get flo which in some ways i suppose was true. mary wanted flo in the supremes but flo was not happy, flo wanted everyone too have leads and have different songs but berry wasn't about too let that happen.

What's done is done and it's past time that the fans let this silliness go.
luvcam1975 2 years ago 2

Not only did she suffer but so do we as fans
ludel 2 years ago
Mary & Diana both are in the right to hit that stage and sing while strutting their stuff. They both paid their dues from the very beginning and made and continue to make Motown many many millions.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
This performance was before Mary released her best selling book. Remember Mary exposed ugly truths about Motown just as she did on Diana. So it wasn't necessarily this night that pissed off Motown. But I do know on almost anything you see about The Supremes or Motown for that matter (including Motown's 40th anniversary special) Mary STILL is featured giving commentary on countless documentaries.

I protect Mary because I feel this level of hate and lies aimed at her is unjustified. I've said on many Youtube pages about the Supremes that I love them ALL. I don't feel people should be bashing Diana either. I love Diana for her contributions to the Supremes and for being Diana Ross but thats not to say she nor Mary are without their faults.
luvcam1975 2 years ago 3
It's good you live them ALL, I don't. I only have one question, did you grow up in Detroit during the Motown days, and if you did you would have a different upon of Ms. Diana Ross. Friends that knew her would beg to differ with you...Diana would be called a "B" then and now. I don't see the argument about Mary, what did you do?
Delcoman1 2 years ago
i have traveled all over the world including europe africa and latin america and everywhere ross is celebrated from small small villages to the most cosmopolitan cities like paris and milan. it is only in her own country that i have seen the level of misinformation and jealousy about ross' achievement and permance in the patheon of quintessential american stars.
branchwater7 2 years ago
your position is a perfectly sound one. i just find it ironic that it is only when mary comes in for the same bashing that ross haters on these sites subject ross' name to around the clock that the calls for civility come out. my comments about mary are comparable to comments made about ross on here for months and on a regular basis.
branchwater7 2 years ago
Why are there so many hateful comments about Mary Wilson? The Supremes were a fab group and gave joy to millions of fans. Celebrate the music they gave. I think all 3 of them are amazing in this video.

come on, luvcam1975! no horse in the race??? not that serious to you????? then why the FOUR comments based on nothing except your need to protect mary the real "lost supreme"????
branchwater7 2 years ago
I have no horse in this race and I love Mary and Diana both. The two of them are not even fighting anymore it's usually their fans that like to keep the drama going. I would like to also add that just because SOME of you are mad at Mary don't make her out to be some broke poor untalented nobody. She has money and lives quite comfortably in Las Vegas.. I saw her condo on Entertainment Tonight a few years ago. Some of these comments about Mary are laughable...it's not that serious to me.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
Alot of you hardcore Ross fans are just pissed because Mary was honest and told the truth about The Supremes story. Thats why Mary's book was a best seller and Diana's own book (that she herself wrote) was not. Diana's book got horrible reviews and was a huge disappointment for her just like The Return To Love tour was.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
I too believe she is not making much for her concerts but don't act as if she is broke just because you dislike her. She was getting six figures back in the 80's for her royalties so I imagine it has been adjusted since then and she is getting more. So yes Diana is definately worth more but I'm not sure it's 200 mill. I love Diana too but I'm not gonna play Mary down only to build Diana up more.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
performance??? this can hardly be called a performance by mary. a stunt or a childish cry for help would be more like it. this was the last time mary was invited back to motown.

I also heard that it was DIANA who said they should all wear black and white as a way of controlling everything and Mary just didn't want to be controlled anymore.

That doesn't sound controlling to me. That sounds like an idea. She probaly wanted them all to wear black because she wanted them to match.

When you spend time and money in court battles for years...your not in a position to be there financially for anybody. Motown ripped a lot of their artist off and Mary was one that they almost seceeded at bankrupting. She is in a great place now financially but she had to fight like hell over her own money in court for years. She doesn't retain all rights to the name Supremes but she can still use it and she was able to still secure her money from the Supremes royalties.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
I will not allow my love for Diana to dismiss the fact that she at times was lowdown and shady. People who say that Mary was not close to Flo are misinformed. There is actual audio of Flo on Youtube saying that Mary was there for her and visited her and her daughters often. Mary was having financial problems with Motown so she couldn't help Flo in that way. Mary spent enough time and money in court making sure Motown wouldn't rip her off.
luvcam1975 2 years ago 2
True Supremes fans fell in love with all three not just one. Diana tried to do the reunion tour without Mary and Cindy and it was a huge failure and had to be cancelled due to half filled arenas. So when it comes to The Supremes MOST of the fans love all three not just Diana. If that wasn't the case Diana would've been able to carry the tour by herself.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
I heard that the tickets were pathetically expensive as well.
NateNH 2 years ago
Some of you write as if Mary is broke and has no other means to support herself. Remember she still does get royalties from all those Supreme records. She is also a best selling author and has made and still makes plenty of money off of her books. She still tours and does concert dates so that is also income for her. Diana has more money but by NO means is Mary Wilson broke.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
I'll bet anything that Mary is broke and has been broke for some time. IF she is getting royalties from Motown, I'll bet they don't amount to much--and that's a big IF.Best selling author??!! She had that best seller how many years ago?It was ONE book. That money is long gone.Wasn't she getting royalties when Diana was lending her money?Tours and concerts? Ok, let's get real. She's not making much from those "tours and concerts" Oh, she's broke alright. Diana on the other hand is worth 200mill.
crut5 2 years ago 3
She is still getting her royalties because she never signed them away like Flo. You assume she has spent all the money she makes from her books. You don't know how much money she has made from them being bestsellers... nor do you know whats in her bank account. You forget that she has been selling her books (along with other mechandise) on her website for years. With the renewed interest in the Supremes due to the movie Dreamgirls sales have spiked for anything Supremes.
luvcam1975 2 years ago
Diana Ross admirers need to realize that it's not "superficial" just smearing exaggerated exotic makeup on your face and wearing a sparkling gown that gets you respect. It's "hard" work to become a brand and something that sells. The attitude doesn't go far if it's not backed up with "real" talent. You don't get through life treating others like they are beneath you just because you see yourself as a diva. Diana is who she is because she had a talent that sold-the world "bought" her brand.
JustMeHere9 2 years ago 2
Diana Ross is a very fascinating person. Even in this footage you can see an evolution and a metamorphosis with her. She clearly in this footage looks like a part of a "unit"-3 girls all on "almost" equal footing and evolves and emerges front and foremost from the group into a superstar. This montage really conveys the path of life from starting out at the bottom to getting to the top. It expresses what we all want for ourselves in whatever we choose to do. She achieved it and we are amazed.
JustMeHere9 2 years ago
I think the problem with the "rabid" behavior of Diana Ross fans is that inside themselves they see a little of her behavior. They adore the bitchy successful diva style because it communicates "power" and control to them. The idea of an attractive personality barking orders at everyone and people capitulating and placating the "diva" is awesome to them. They want to emulate it and get that kind of fearsome automatic respect and entitlements. She is 1 of a kind and has paid a price for it.
JustMeHere9 2 years ago
I think that all Supremes performances should be put to rest except for performance clips. All of the Sups had their faults. Who cares?!! If you can't come together in love, stop bashing each other and let it go. I personally hated this performance because of the stupidity behind it. I love Mary, but where Flo was concerned, she was not always Flo's biggest supporter like she claims.
Bok97 2 years ago
I actually met Mary Wilson back in the 80s and the weirdest thing was that she was wearing her hair just like Diana Ross and kept flicking it back like Ross.
She had this advance man and he told us to call her Miss Wilson (which we did not). It was surreal. And sad.
OldMotownFan 2 years ago
Mary isn't a big star as Diana but she thinks that she is.
She destroys every Supremes song when she sings lead and she shouldn't go on singing this great songs.
chrissi2810 2 years ago
I think Mary has a nice voice that is smokier and huskier, but sexy in a different way from Diana's. She should have gone her own way though. I was at a fundraiser where she sang the Supreme songs and it was not right for her voice. People were running for the elevators.
OldMotownFan 2 years ago
Yes, that's right. She should sing ither songs, not the ones from the Supremes. She doesn't habe the voice for this.

OldMotownFan 2 years ago
Yes, that's. She's an asshole. She wanted to be in center. She's jealous of Diana and she wanted to show her that on this evening I think. She took over the song and wanted to call Gordy to the stage. She wore the red dress to stand out with all others.
And then she played the victim.

Yes, I know those songs, mkrobinson95, but I still think that they were perceived differently than today's songs about sex. I mean 'get up, get up, get up, get up, let's make love tonight' differs a lot from today's 'yo, b***h, a** up face down' crap. I think it is also the misogynist content of today's songs, whereas songs of the 80's which dealt with that subject give the impression that the women addressed in the song were on a par with the men singing about them.
cassiopeiascurse 2 years ago 3
Since Michael died, I'm always wishing for a possibility to turn back time. The eighties were wonderful. All those wonderful, talented music artists. Everything was so classy. I'm sorry and I don't want to sound racist, but nowadays music made by Afro-Americans seems to be mostly about b****es and h*s or who has the most 'bling' and who is the biggest pimp or the biggest gangsta. I so miss the old days. When everything was classy and when people sang about sex it was subtle and not so blatant.
cassiopeiascurse 2 years ago 2
What about Let's Get It On? Sexual Healing? Super Freak? There was plenty of smut back then too ... and there are plenty of classy acts now too ...
mkrobinson95 2 years ago
Real Music created and performed by African-Americans is not being promoted and most of the songs described in your post that are being promoted are enforced by the Caucasians who are the owners and executives running the labels that release these songs....the songs are being enforced by them because they market it to sell. Listen to Maxwell, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild and a massive array of African American Artists who sing real and beauitful music and have something constructive to sing.

Diana Ross will always Supreme.

mary is not anywhere near ross' level as either a businesswoman or an artist. in '81, ross made a record breaking independent deal with rca and set up her own music management, licensing. management and film production companies establishing a business model that provided a template for the likes of michael and janet, madonna, prince and oprah. ross has consistently demonstrated her excellent business sense in the sound management of her and her family's financial affairs, unlike mary.
