Examining the ideas of this man, it is difficult to place them within the traditional yet wide parameters of Islam (that are based on various factors namely, Quran, sunnah, tajdeed or renewal) as they and as Islam is known all over the Islamic world in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

While Ustaz Mahmoud's ideas may not fit within the traditional framework which we saw examples of in Sudan's NIF, Saudi Arabia's Wahibst, and Afganistan's Taliban, it still represents the essence of Islam where peace, freedom and equality co-exist.

But when talking about or in the name of Islam on an intellectual level, the application of this man's ideas within the theological framework of Islam (Quran, sunnah, tajdeed / renewal et al) becomes necessary, and this has still not ocurred at any satisfactory level even by some of this man's disciples such as Dr An-Naim.

God bless the soul of Mahmoud Mohamed Taha, martyr of freedom of thought and conscience in sudan. He was convicted of (apostasy) and hanged in january 1985. his trial was a travesty of justice. Sudan has never recovered from the shock of his death. Religious islamist extremism took power by force in 1989, and they are still ruling the country with an iron fist.

Ustaz Mahmoud isn;t the only one they got rid of..William Deng Nhial from Southern Sudan!!!..who attempted fight the divides based on religion and race. It breaks my heart to see our country being control by two isms..Islamism and Arabism!!..many of Sudanese have given their Dignities..to Arabians..this is what they were but we were different..Arabs who came should have join us not us joining them!!..Lord save our nation.
