  • wow thanks for uploading this, brings back old memories!

  • This has got to be about the lamest attempt by even infomercial standards, to sell a product...Damn this was shitty........

  • If you think this is lame, you should see the video response I posted on part 2 of this video! (Check out my channel for more info!)

  • The pedophile reaching inside the girl's dress had me sold. I'm definitely getting me one of those! Compact size, higher resolution, and endless recording possibilities definitely makes me to throw away my JVC VHS player and get a Sony Betamax player!

  • What model was in this commercial? I aso wonder if this little girl's parents had a fit when she tried to use it? That was the case with me when I was young with my aunt and uncle's machine, (SL-6200/TV combo). Their attitude about me using it didn't change much when they upgraded to VHS in 1983!

  • a creepy old man magically appears into a little girls bedroom. that's disturbing.

  • I know I'm probably going to get shouted at, but Sanyo Betamax machines were a lot better than Sony's, the early Sony recorders (as featured in this video) were absolute monsters which were hard to repair and even harder to move around, Sanyo's more basic VCR's were much more user-friendly and a lot cheaper (The VTC 5000 was even cheaper than most VHS decks on the market at that time)

  • You will not get shouted at because you are totally correct. I also had a 1978 Sanyo Betamax and it was much easier to work on and was a lot lighter than the equivalent Sony unit. It also cost about a hundred dollars less. I used the Sanyo for about ten years with no problems till it finally would only record in black and white. By that time I had switched to newer Sony units.

  • Thanks for posting this video here in YouTube! I really enjoyed it!

  • This is relay fantastic. I don't believe I could see this again,

I watched this video when my father brought it in 1984, I was 4 years old. my mother used to play it for me and my sister, we watched it 10th of times.

This affected my intention to chose Engineering study, since it was very rare to see that devices in Egypt at that decade.

One of scenes still impressing me when they was standing inside the picture on wall.

    Tamer

  • This is brilliant; thanks for posting it. Like many others here, I, too, haven't seen this in decades.

  • "Contrived" would be an understatement

  • Thank you for posting this! Even though I haven't watched this for 20 years I remember it all so clearly. I must have watched it far too many times in my childhood.

  • i wasnt born in 86,87!

  • holy shit i just had a flash back to 198?. i remember this video from when my parents purchased their first vcr.

  • in 10-15 years people will post ads of blu-ray players and hd lcd tvs and laught at our era.

  • You know, when I watch early 80's TV footage, it freaks me 10 times more than seeing a Freddy movie ou a slasher movie.

  • What a cruel man! He put the Beta cassette right into the girl's pocket (lol sarcastic of course).

Oh my god, I just love those L-500 L-750 L-835Sony Beta cassettes and their colored boxes. It's just appealing, I dont know if it's only me but... and the word Dynamicron, way better than Bravia. (Sony had always a key word to define a new technology)

  • IS that... INSPECTOR CLUESO??!

  • hey guys this tv set are the Profell Sony line its a trinitron component tv KX-2501 and a tv turner VTX-1100R.and the rack mount. i get one like this in perfect working conditions, the bad thing of this system had not S-video inputs...

  • This is hilarious! I wonder if they were really serious about this. ;D

  • wow! high-def back then wasn't so... high def.

  • What country was this made for? I have two tapes of this and both play with sound but no picture, making me think it's not NTSC format. Looks like Arabic lettering on those VCRs in the factory footage, and that magician guy's first language obviously isn't English.

  • Sony Japan probably commissioned the marketing plan and the video was an American production based on the actors (even the slightly pedophiliac French-accented magician). The video was primarily distributed in PAL format in developing markets, that explains the Arabic stickers on the T7's the hosts are riding. It's an interesting relic of a video.

  • Interesting- the sound plays properly on my machine, I thought PAL Beta ran at a different speed than NTSC. I have a few recorded tapes that came with this which someone must have recorded overseas- my machine blacks out the picture during playback but you can see a little when you fast-forward and one tape I checked appeared to be a US show with Arabic subtitles- don't know if any commercials are on it. Will have to find a compatible machine, supposedly current LCD TVs can display PAL!

  • Betamax tapes were not designed to last 30 years, and over their lifespan they made so many variations, and most players were multisystem, most TVs were not. I have not used a betamax in close to 15 years, so it's all fuzzy, but I loved this silly video and wanted to share it.

  • You can a pal to ntsc converter or take it somewhere to get it converted. That's what I did with a video casette I had.

  • @eyeh8nbc

This demonstration video was made for all sorts of markets and in various video standards.

For the factory footage, you've got to remember that Sony's Japanese factories had made products destined to be sold in all sorts of countries, so it shouldn't be a surprise to have seen a foreign market VCR in a production line that also turned out equipment for export to the USA.

As for the magician, he is supposed to be French. Stereotypical magician.

  • Did they seriously intend for that lady to carry that cinder-block-like Betamax around on her shoulder? Ouch.

  • Great; teach little girls to go off hand in hand with charming adult male strangers...

  • That's what I was thinking. Then she sleeps with the guy in the second video. :D

  • That kid is spoilt. I did not get a VCR in my room until 1996 and eave then it was a mono top loading VHS.

    Any way...

This video is great thanks for posting.

  • whoever came up with Sony land was on something.

  • the betamax, despite being a very advanced -for then standards- product in terms of image, technology and capacities, ended up losing the war due to its expensiveness, lack of format acceptance and sony's protectionism on letting its format be acepted by other brands

  • wacky 80's

  • Thanks for uploading. This is the clearest betamax video tape recording I'd ever watch since my dad bought a Sony betamax.

  • damn nice. been looking for this. wonder where she is now?
