Hawking is an exception to the rule. Most disabled people are ticks on the system. We cannot devise a system based on what disabled people "might do". Exceptions can not dictate practice. I support government controlled healthcare because eventually a budget bureaucrat will say "you know what? You are a false supporter of health care reform. I am tired of the perceived need to hide what we are really about. This bill has to be passed to CONTROL population and eventually reduce it. The government can never do this without control of healthcare. You said profit trumps life in the current system. True, but it should The earth is horribly over-populated. With the government control, it will be "funding trumps life" just as it should be. Human life is a cancer and it has to be dealt with.

No offense, but most Americans don't think that Abortion should be paid for by the government. It's still a major gray area, and I for one don't believe in simply throwing them away, which is what they do. How many historical or cultural figures have risen to the top?
Also, the big area would be how do define undesirable? Because your definition of who deserves that label may differ from mine.
That being said, I do like an option that makes a public health care program.

While I'm not for the Sin against Earth comment, I do agree with you that the Earth is overpopulated and is causing diseases to get worse and spread quicker. Unfortunately, looking at world events, the Middle East might soon solve that problem for us.
However, that is not America. It's Africa, South America, and Asia. And while I'm all for sticking it to those screwjob masters at the insurance companies, this would only affect America, not the places where they need it.
