Came across the Tengu in Dead or Alive 2. My wife noticed it and told me it was a traditional monster in Japan (along with the Oni and Kappa). My response was "You're got to be kidding me" because the Tengu was pretty much the most stupid, random creature I'd ever seen.

Ever since I got into playing dead or alive 2 for the dreamcast I became really interested in the tengu. But after I found out that a single daitengu has the strength of 100 men and sojobo (the king of tengu) has the strength of 10,000 men tengu became my absolute favorite mythological creature. It blows my mind how there is so little anime,manga, and Japanese movies surrounding the myth of the tengu. the most notable atleast imo recently is gantz,naruto, and tactis

When I was in Japan, I was taught about the Tengu and saw masks that were over a hundred years old. Tengu, and Shinto in general, are really neat. The shrines there are amazing too. I love the random empty shrines in the forests and up in the mountains.

No. The Tengu is a mythical creature of japan. Kidnappers of children were considered at that time were missing. But the Tengu was also adapted for many games including death or alive.

yea I live in the US, I was supposed to visit Japan a few times; once as an exchange student in highschool, once as a graduation trip and once to see my best friend Arisa, but it ever worked out. I love naruto, it is my favorite anime.

Thats a shame that a person like you who has such deep interest on Japanese culture has not been able to go to japan yet. When you have a chance, definitely try to go. naruto is actually one of my favorite anime, but I read the japanese manga more than watching them on TV.  i finished this year's college semester so I will be flying back to Japan as my summer vacation in couple of days. Its always good to go back to my home country.

I didnt really say manga was superior to anime, but now that you mention it, I guess you are right. anime tends to change the storyline to shorten it but I have watched some really good animes as well.
