@Turandot29 Dear Nessun Dorma: The Russians just love doing it, as do Moldovans and Ukrainians. See my sermon on the Sacredness of Water for more details.
This is fantastic Vladyka! We have a pond here on campus, I should have asked my Spiritual father if he'd come and do this with us students. Next year for sure!
Are you familliar with a blog called "Russia Lite?" The January 18th entry is called, "Epiphany, or the Last One in is a Rotten Egg." It's quite funny.
Vladyka, I think it is absolutely strange that the cold Slavic countries and even now the Great White North, still continue a Theophany tradition that began in the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Hypothermia isn't the best way to praise the Lord :)
@AgiosGiorgios The Slavs love the cold water. You know, they also come out of a hot banya (Sauna) and leap directly into the snow. And they do the dive for the cross with great piety.
What is the purpose of this exercise? Are they speaking Russian?

I'd ask the Father, "how about St, Tomas Virgin Island next time!"

@40chrisk Come to think of it, why are we having the Congress in Moscow in mid-February instead of Morocco or Malta?

Hope Dr. Smirnoff is waiting once they get out!

We sent a ten year old girl into the water. I'm not saying we're better or tougher or anything ;).
Of course, there's a big difference between this and the Virginia coast.

The reluctant participant removes any sense of piety from the ritual.

I would probably feel around for the Cross with my feet, but then again, I can't picture myself actually doing this. Slavs are tough! I am not!

Does it ever happen for the cross to remain in the water until summer?
