I'm tempted to think Ryo is to Makoto in the voice department... and some other things. Makoto feels like she has more of a masculine feel to it which sort of detracts from her being feminine. Ryo on the other hand has a feminine voice that detracts from him being a boy.

By the way I think Ryo alludes to female impersonators in Kabuki theater when it was made law back in the Edo period that Kabuki had to be all male acting.

I don't think that it lessens the likeliness of a release in the US, though it doesn't raise the likeliness much, either.

A crossdresser/boy pretending to be girl / girl pretending to be boy isn't uncommon, really.

Mulan = kids' movie = girl pretending to be boy.

In the US it "seems" that females are given a bit more leeway when it comes to cross dressing. I personally don't find it objectionable, however i am not employed by the ESRB--in some aspects thankfully, then at other times I'd love to work there so they can understand that some things are just not-that-bad.

ESRB isn't really the issue when comes to games being published (unless they rate something AO). It's more to do with the company responsible. IM@S is handled by Namco Bandai, and if you're a gaming nut that knows about their U.S. publishing corp (Namco USA), then you'd know that they are extremely picky - if not random - when it comes to publishing games. Truth is, if they were interested in releasing IM@S outside Japan they would have done so by now.

Thankfully, DS and PSP are region free.

we were comparing it to some of the stuff in Persona 4, which contains some...questionable stuff as well XD However, Persona 4 is 'protected' by the M for Mature rating. You're supposed to be 17+ before you play it.
