In fact he played nearly all of his career with a defensive midfielder supporting him from behind (Petit, Gilberto, even Edu who was a deep-lying passer). However he had very good defensive skills and could drop back to play defensive midfielder alongside his partner, but never by himself.

That is indeed true but 2006/2007 was his best year he was brilliant sure enough we finished 4th but his defensive play was brilliant and we saw how good his offensive play was and he was a surprisingly good passer of the ball.
