The definitive version, in my opinion, true perfection and a real understanding of the meaning of this beautiful song. Ameling's legato line just goes on and on, showing such great control. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sublime! The pianist also plays with such sensitivity...beautiful.

This is truly an exquisite interpretation of this immensely difficult and beautiful song. Elly never fails to reveal such sensitivity and musicality. Phrasing, breath-control, sense of flow and overall shape is perfectly appplied here. Such a joy to hear and of course wonderful rapport from the master accompanist, Dalton Baldwin. I recall her two appearances in Grahamstown South Africa around 1972-4 to be amongst the most memorable concerts ever.
It's a shame for recording companies that very few of her recordings are available now, and young listeners can't hear one of the finest concert singers.
Here in Japan, NHK TV is going broadcast Edith Mathis's 1986 recital tomorrow. I really wish they will do the same to Elly Ameling. She toured Japan almost every other year in 80's.
Wow... I've never come across this artist in any of my previous research, but I'm so glad I did! Absolutely beautiful!
