  • WTF v_v ...

  • just amazing, congratulations!!

which video card are you using? AMD/ATI 5000 series?

I'm about to get an AMD Radeon HD 5750 to run 3 monitors with Ubuntu, searching a lot at Ubuntu forums about this but information seems to contradict... Do you think the AMD drivers will work well (with eyefinity) in Ubuntu?

    thanks

  • Can this be done on Ubuntu 11? I am driving myself insane. Can't find any site where it explains if and how to do it. I can get it working with xinerama but performance sucks - massive flicker when moving windows across screens and lots of ugly stuff. Please somebody point me in the right direction.

  • @jackatube I don't think nvidia's drivers enable this feature using two video cards. I switched to ATI/AMD using eyefinity which is built into their drivers to support this. With the eyefinity 6 cards I can power 6 monitors using a single video card, and probably 12 using two video cards.

  • @jackatube On another note, this was done using xserver-XGL which is no longer maintained and was basicly a software driven 3d environment. This worked well on this quad core machine at the time, but since then there have been many changes to the xorg/xserver and I have not re-visited this in an attempt to get it to work again. Ubuntu Jaunty was as far as I was able to get this to work on.. You may want to check the thread in the ubuntu forums to see the latest info.

  • I would be so productive with 6 monitors

  • EPIC

  • Aaaaaaa3 n7eb na3mel haka :'(

  • i only have 3 displays... actually ubuntu is not suporting the whole virtual destop

  • Awesome job!

  • You should sell setups like this to rich people and make a fortune!

  • repent to Jesus everyday! Jesus can come at anytime! repent! repent! repent!

  • this sure is necessary.

  • that thing when you spinned the windows.... awesome =O

  • i'm looking at ubuntu. I'm running win xp pro still. vista and 7 not really impressing me enough to switch yet.

you to rework your station. lower your monitors height so they about spit at eye level and you can work from a recliner w/small mouse pad. you won't hurt your neck looking up at the top screens all the time. unless you only keep them for show.

i also got a mini fridge by the chair and stereo system with qaud 15" subs for real sound, couch in back for other WOW gamers.

  • what kind of video card do you have in order to do that.

  • what graphic card do you own

  • @circutracer150

I can give you the first step:

    1. Buy 6 monitors

  • lol kung fu panda

  • how did you configured the vlc to play the movie like that on multiple monitors?

  • wow this is so fucking awesome

  • nice one mate can you send me your xorg.conf please

  • frinking great mate. can you send me your xorg.conf please.

  • It is not possible for me to project video on projectors with Ubuntu 9.04 in my laptop. It is easy with Windows XP, but with Ubuntu 9.04, the whole system crashes if I try to project something on a projector. I'm not sure if Ubuntu has issues with Intel video cards (which is the brand I use) or what.

  • i drooled when i saw this

  • can i have one?

  • Thanks for the info! Just one more question: does it work using ATI cards (without eyefinity)?

  • aewsome work man!!!

may I ask you how much stable is this setting (without eyefinity)? How hard was to make it work? Which videocards did you use? I've tried getting 3 screens to work on 9.04 but failed cause xinerama just hanged my X session.

  • @D4ftPunk3r This configuration was very stable with 9.04 and Xserver-XGL - I think it had a lot to do with having enough memory (8gb) and quad cores - it was a great setup, fast, stable, flash 64bit even worked great once pulse audio was configured correctly. For information on how to setup this configuration check the ubuntu forums and search for 6 monitors - there is a very long thread there detailing everything. All the information you need can be found there.

  • Nice man, gotta check it out on ubuntu forums. Have you tried this same setting on 9.10?

    thanks for the info!

  • @D4ftPunk3r Myself and others have also got the same method to work with 9.10 - those instructions are also in the thread. Good luck!

  • @d2globalinc

Nice, nice, nice! Really thanks for the info, man!

  • @d2globalinc

Thanks for the info! Just one more question: does it work using ATI cards (without eyefinity)?

  • @d2globalinc

Thanks for the info! Just one more question: does it work using ATI cards (without eyefinity)?

  • i gotta say, you are more then a nerd then me, I Respect you lol

  • @neel35 I've been called worse! LoL! Nerd is one I'll be happy to be called!

  • @d2globalinc thats tight

  • for this you need a motherboard with 3 pci-e en you connect 3 videocarts & on all of them use 2 monitors en make them use together

  • @pim47 Or.. the current system I'm using now uses two ATI Eyefinity 6 cards ( you can do it with one but I wanted to also link them with crossfire (AMD/ATI's SLI))

  • I thought you have to use xinerama as soon as you use multiple Cards and xinerama is slow and makes compiz impossible.

    So how does this work?.

I have a triple-head setup with 2 Nvidia-GPUs and it is about 100 times slower than yours.

  • @schmolck Search the ubuntu forums for 6x Monitors and you should see the howto / information .. It uses a hack of the old Xserver-XGL to make it work.. Not sure if its working anymore with latest ubuntu/kubuntu versions however. I've officially switched to ATI Eyefinity 6 now.

  • I will subscribe you because im jealous

  • :O no mames yo kiero una asi ;D jaja GoodBye Windows!

  • @abelyto0 Si de verdad te quieres cambiar yo y muchos mas te podemos ayudar en la transicion solo avisame

  • who do i have to kill to have my ubuntu flying like this? :'(

im not able to play a damn video or dvd... shit!

  • @oficinax: install and use VLC* to play almost every kind of video and google for medibuntu ppa and/or libdvdcss2 to get DVDs run.

    * "sudo aptitude install vlc" (without quotes on a console) or use synaptic/kpackagekit, type "vlc" and select "install".

  • @p1703 yep, im using vlc, and when things are too slow i use xine, ive just discovered that ir runs almost without problems on my note (1440x900) and as slow as a snail when i plug a 24" in (1920x1200) =/

anyway, it seems that using kubuntu 10.04 it runs a little better

    thanks anyway

    take care

  • U can call it Kubuntu if u installed on it KDE...

  • i guess he can watch his porn in, well, porn-o-ramic view, huh?

  • awsome

  • What is used to mount them?

    Thanks

  • @TonkatrainHONKHONK Just buy a Mainboard with 3 PCIExpres slot and buy 3 Video cards with dual video output like GeForce 9800GTX+ im using 2 displays... but im still jealous

  • @EnavSounds

I was wondering how they were mounted to the wall in the video. I'm doing a similar setup with eyefinity.

  • what is tat circle fing at 2:00

  • Compiz Effect. search for that.

  • haha incredible! ubuntu for the win!

omg man that musthave taken ages to configure lol great job!!!!

  • PLEASE say you are going to do a how to vid man.. PLEASE!

You CANNOT tease us with tech porn like this and NOT share your wisdom!!!!

  • what tech wisdom? get 6 monitors link them. simple.

  • I don't know how to do that. Not everyone in the world has the time on their hands to figure it out themselves either. That is why people ask questions from those more knowledgeable than they.

  • This aint no magic. Get 6 Monitors, get a adapter to be able to attach them all to the pc and than create 6 Workspaces. That simpel.

  • After doing this, the monitors and computer will automatically create the one large image as is shown with the Kung Fu Panda movie??

  • no, thats for 6 working screens on which you can switch between the workstations. To get the collaborating, you'll first have to have the right graphic card. Cause not every card has a linux driver that supports twinscreen-option (its called so, but used for everything higher than one). NVidia for example works fine.

I did it like that: Open xorg.conf In the module section replace "nv" with "glx". under the heading section make sure the driver says: "nvidia".

  • At the screen section and add this:

    Option RenderAccel true

Restart X and pray, that you have done everything right. Otherwise you'll have to replay your xorg.conf backup, that you hopefully have made befor starting.

If everything is okay, open xorg.conf again in the Heading "Screens" and add the following lines

    ##This turns on NVidias TwinView

    Option TwinView

##Here Im setting the resolution to the individual monitors.

    Option MetaModes 1280×1024 1280×1024″

    Done. 2 mins work ...

  • wtf unless your a day trader why would you need six monitors.

  • Works great for Web app development or any other software development, as well as graphic arts (have all your tools and app opotions open at once).. Also works great for monitoring our datacenter while doing all of the above :) - can't live without it :D lets you do everything faster :)

  • my bad, i didnt know it was used as a business computer, i thought it was one of those youtube 'hax0r' kid videos or something, the kung fu panda screen threw me off.

  • Yah - this is one of many videos of this system.. The video was used to demo the FULL Screen video across all 6 screens, and the mouse gestures and movement of the video.

  • great stuff

  • wow tell me how i can only do iton 2 screens and how did u get tat circuek part in 2:18 - 2:22

  • Amazing!

  • whats the techspecs on that computer?

  • ok dude, nice pretty nice... but what do you need for a 6 monitors for???

If you are in the stock market that would be fucking nice but what are the linux software to monitor stocks positions?? haven't found any one yet!!!

  • maybe wine could help with that

  • i want that too :D

  • Good job!! This is a truly OS. Regards from Doha. Rating 5 star. :-)

  • very nice!the future is ubuntu!!!!

  • that is not a gdm enviroment is kde4 :)

  • Actually its a bit of both ;) - but the one shown here is KDE 4.2.2 - we will be showing off a full Kubuntu / KDE 4.3.x environment soon hopefully with Karmic x86_64.

  • wat are the stats for your tower/towers?

  • ha - good one - but check the ubuntu forums for more information about how this is done.

  • Nice try. He is showing features microsoft could only dream of. This surelely is linux.

btw, this is the new gdm environnement, in which the taskbar looks indeed a little windowsish

  • i have a question, when i try to make a video fullscreen on ubuntu 9.04 in dual monitor on two 19" monitors, the video goes in fullscreen only on one of the two monitors... how did you make it in fullscreen on all the 6 monitors?

thx in advance for ur answer

  • I'm not crying.. those are happy tears. :D Nice video. I haven't ever seen 6 LCD's in action with Ubuntu. I now know that I do in fact want 6 LCD's. Thanks a lot lol.

  • You sir, have won the game!

  • very nice

  • wow you are crazy!!! i love those screens!!! i wish i'll have that someday haha.

    Thanks for your video

  • cool

  • That's awesomely insane, lol. I'm thinking who needs this though, unless your doing stocks or some other work that requires multiple windows.

  • owned

  • carbon footprint?

  • dude gorgeous display! im a mac/ubuntu user and ill tell u what...i dont even know how microsoft is still in buisness=)

  • Linux Rocks, Windows Sucks

    ,

    that's my theroy xD

  • That is soooo coool homie!

  • thx

  • I think I just was converted ... ! I want this... Could you please share the details for machine details for this?

  • how hard was setting up your ubuntu? All nvidia same model cards?

  • I think I just shat myself. Awesome!

  • could you for kicks and giggles give us the computer set up as far as how many video cards and speed all the hardware info please......looks awesome

  • I agree

  • wicked dude........just wicked

  • OH MY WORD! my jaw just dropped when you went full-screen with the film across all six monitors!! Magnificent!

  • Ubuntu works best with Nvidia cards.....i have a ATI 4850 and it crashed my ubuntu when i updated it. But now im back on windows XP 64 bit and it's fast but i still love ubuntu the best, so now im going to get a case for my asus a8n sli board and get another video card with a dual core cpu and setup a stand alone linux pc to watch movies and to play around with.

  • lol

  • SO guys, to set up this, u need 3 video cards( usualy come with 2 vga or 2 dvi ports, or mixed 1 dvi and 1 vga port) 6 monitors, then run multiple dysplay wizard if u have Nvidia cards.

PS: Alot of proccesing power is needed only for programs that realy need , such as video rendering, 3d rendering, and games)

  • Unfortunately it's a little more complicated than that when dealing with multiple video cards, and multiple monitors, in ubuntu - in order to enable compiz effects, desktop effects, 3d rendering, etc.

  • I don't agree with the Windows bashing, (you need Windows to game) But awesome setup, what size are the monitors? How is it all hooked up?

I swear I'm going to do this someday when I actually have the money..

  • Just need to hack the monitors into one giant one so you can run NORAD from that.

  • Cool. Would you please tell us how to set this up?

  • Lol,I have this on my computer itsreally awsome i recommend everyone gets Ubuntu its beta then window vista and xp :P

  • SWEET.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. This thing is ... is ... i don't have words! can you tell me what hardware do you have? Thanks. :D

  • Why would you need six monitors. Are you preparing drive Star Ship Galactica? j/k

Love your setup, and I'm green with envy.

  • The matrix setup. Very sexy. But there weren't enough stressful tasks running. How about a live TV session and some heavy video editing on one of the screens.

  • Yeah, we need Windoze. Not!

  • W000000W!

  • cool i am have a woman i must be a free man $ i can do it toe .lol

  • that is awesome!

  • man wow

  • Omg....

This is my dream setup... :O

  • That's what I thought, too, but the video doesn't show any work being done, it's just candy. Can another video be made whereby some work is actually do leveraging these 6 monitors?

  • I guess that's true- if you're not using it for work, the only other thing it might be good for is movies.

By the way- this may sound random but - it's nice to know that there is SOME intelligent people left on youtube.

  • The movie is Kungfu Panda

  • @wesso707 DUH!!!

  • Thanks..

  • Sorry, it went as a reply to you... It actually was for gravaera!!! LOL

  • what gfx cards are you using, did you have to faff around with xorg.conf much?

i have always found ubuntu troublesome when trying to use laptop + 2nd monitor.

+You appear to have GL working fine on all screens, i'd read it usually only allows that on one monitor or something?

  • it all depends on the graphics card, I have used both ati and nvidia cards and nvidia are better at rendering compiz even with multiple monitors, ati not so much, ive always had problems with compiz and ati

  • nice, i want this setup!

matches full definition of "Command Centre", although 8 screens would be better.

  • the "fullscreen" (all 6) is pretty awesome! :)

  • with this, and bit more changes, six persons can use 1 computer at the same time.

you can watch your videos, while your mom see they mails (without busy the entire powerfull machine, or lag the video), while your father work, and maybe even some one playing something. =D

windows can use multiple monitors but can't select multiple windows.

just one thing, where you found a video card with 6 video outputs? USB monitor?

  • It's called using 3 video cards.

And why would you want your family next to you while you do your own computing?

It's not supposed to be a picnic.

  • was just a example of what you can do.

    thanks for the answer.

  • Only 1 problem with linux. Games. Once the Games Go to Linux, then We will all follow eargerly. You get the games, you get the geeks, gamers, nerds, tech junkies and the entire hardcore PC fanbase.

The word of mouth starts with them.

  • Go Ubuntu and say goodbye to Windows forever!

    Welcome to my world! ;)

  • cool stuff !

  • That's awesome but what do you use 6 monitors for? I can't wait tell Chrome OS comes out. Maybe it will get so big that people will make mainstream games for it.

  • Could you please post or send me the Xorg config for your setup ? I have a very similar one, also with 6 displays running on two separate video cards.

  • Comment removed

  • I can see needing 2 screens by 6? Really, who does that much work at once?

The fullscreen Kung-Fu Panda was cool though.

  • XD i always wanted either one screen completely covering my wall, or a bunch of screens coverying my entire room!!

  • it's not about need, about having the money to be AWESOME!

  • wow, specs?

  • :D Wow.. Este es mi sueño ¡¡¡ Muchos plasmás de 45 pulgadas ¡¡

  • JAJAJA tambien era mi sueño hace dos años ...si k estaba loco XD jeje

  • Please, post instructions on how this can be setup. I have a setup of two 24" and one 30" Screens and I would really like to see compiz in action on all screens. So please share your wisdom ;-)

  • my dream

  • hmm. Doesn't look like it fails here ;) - and its not exactly a default install ;)

  • Beautiful. I'm lovin' it. I just wish I had the money to do such a thing

  • you're the man.

  • Ahhh shite, now i've got to go buy me 5 more screens... thanks dude :)

  • lol, youre running windows still(a windows virtual machine is still windows), along with windows applications, which isn't really saying goodbye to windows...

  • Actually running windows apps better than they ran if windows was the host OS, and running them in a secure environment where they can't harm the Host or my vital applications. This setup turns windows into what it should be, and that's nothing more than an application. To be honest, there are only 2 applications I use windows for, one is Internet Explorer and one is VMware Infastructure Console.

  • But it still grants access to the Z: drive.:( I am glad you responded, you obviously know more than the average youtube video poster. I like your setup. What are the hw specs?

  • Details on this build are in the info under our video titled "uBuntu 8.04 Compiz Fusion 6 x 20" LCD XGL 3x NVIDIA 8800GTX" - you can find it under our channel. There are pictures and spec links there.

  • Internet Explorer is only needed when some idiot web-designer still refuses to publish a website with proper standards, and vmware infastructure client will only be used until the linux alternative is available. So with this setup - I get the performance and reliable operating system 100% of the time, and can still run windows applications for testing and work if needed in a secure environment.

  • You could use IES4LINUX. o.o

  • Besides, I have to have a place to test and solve windows issues for clients until we get them all converted over to ubuntu ;)

  • Convert them to the ways of bash + screen. (:

  • WOW! Sweet RIG!!!

  • Linux IS taking over the world...

    Go ubuntu !

  • The movie and ubuntu go in sync. :-)

"He was so deadly infact his enemies will go blind from over exposure to pure awesomeness" (i mean ubuntu. Windows users will go blind after seeing ubuntu's awesomeness.)

Windows Users: "how can we pay you"

Ubuntu: " there is no charge for awesomeness" (ubuntu is free)

    :-)

  • Yes.. There are no accidents.. Ubuntu is my KUNG-FU :P

  • How the hell did u manage to run Yahoo messenger on Ubuntu?Pls don't tell me via a virtual simulated windows enviroment....been trying to make the damn thing work for ages via wine

  • why not use pidgin? it has yahoo messenger built in doesn't it?

  • I'm using it,but only because of the lack of alternatives out there, also, why not use the real thing if u manage to get it working?(I need both the send file feature and the webcam)

  • i was unaware you couln't use the webcam or file send feature. im not much of a online chatter. im sure theres a trick to pigin that allows you to o those tasks? have you searched for it?

  • u can send files with pidgin, but you can't voice chat/view,send webcam, you can't photoshare.....basically pidgin just strips everything to....chatting,and nothing more, that's why I kinda want the real thing

  • man i can berly get 2 monitors setup on 9.04 the screen set-up thing sucks

  • d2globalinc: congrats on getting this working on 9.04. I used your blueprints to do this setup on 8.04 on 2 machines so far, and its amazing. Your tutorial saved me a lot of time with my xorg.conf. I wouldn't mind going up to ubuntu 9 so i can get raid support for my hard drives using the dmraid drivers instead of mdraid. It seems like there's a bug in ubuntu 8.04 on the dmraid support for my intel matrix raid controller. It works fine with 8.10 so im sure 9.04 would do it too.

  • awsome

this just proves why linux is the best

  • you are my hero

  • I'm just running 9.04 on a cheap 22inch. But that is amazing though. Not something you want to bring up though on a date.

  • Depends on the date!

  • What graphic card? DVI/VGA?

    or 2 Cards?
