Benicio Del Toro deserved also a oscar for his role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the best role of his life. And at least a nomination for his role in Che.
This was a joke! Most of the nominations were laughable considering many great films were overlooked (Best in Show, The House of Mirth, Saving Grace, Wonder Boys, Remember the Titans) where you can find a plethora of actors in supporting roles who were more deserving of the accolade. Mr. del Toro is a good actor but to think that most everyone was raving about his performance is dismaying.
As much as I love the Oscars it's disheartening and discouraging to see hype win over talent.
It still sends chills down my back how powerful his words were in traffic, he hardly said anything, but with some powerful lines. His conversation in the pool with the DEA was brilliant, short but detailing into his character and sadness.
@timothyw98 i 100% agree with you... the scene in the pool and also general salazar's remark "treatment for addiction? addicts treat themselves by overdosing, and there's one less to worry about." are the two most powerful moments in the film. but it also amazed me that he could be so compelling without saying much— brilliant performance, and he totally deserved to win.
Props to Benicio but I want to point out that once again a latino that is not MEXICAN wins an award for portraying a MEXICAN character. Without Mexican STORIES many of your cuban, puertorican, dominicas, etc... and many other non-mexicans that are currently enjoying success would not be where they are today with out first portraying the life of a MEXICAN character. nevertheless thank you Benicio for showing love to Nogales Sonora Mex.
