Wonder how this broken tooth moron from the New York Times feels about his idiotic hand throwing comments now? Two more years of Nobama and now a lot of people feel the same way Jindal did that night.....enough is enough of government involvment in everything.

BATON ROUGE -- Jindal`s $50 million appropriation to keep a chicken-processing plant open in Farmerville may help Gov. Bobby Jindal win legislative support for an $85 million Superdome overhaul at the other end of the state, some lawmakers say.
Is a chicken plant going to make me like this (Saints deal) better? Probably so," said Rep. Noble Ellington, D-Winnsboro. . This gives me a lot more reasons" to support the use of surplus state funds for the Superdome project.
ill give you a mulligan and say that when you typed "remmber" that was a keystroke error, but be careful who you call a dumbshit when in the same line you use a possessive "republican's" when an apostrophe isn't needed.....quite ironic
give us some more brilliant insight from across the atlantic about our political system, then go fix your fucking snaggle teeth, oh wait, with a government run dental plan, you cant. We're trying to save our country from slipping down the slope you're already flying down, so sad
Here's some brilliant insight for you dickface - Bush fucked up our countries by dragging us into a war that didn't make any sense and costed us shit loads of money, this worsened our recessions and has put higher taxes on us. Obama will improve things for America and tighten up the economy so that even if a Republican gets in to the whitehouse next term(which he won't) he won't be able to fuck up the country to the magnitude that you republican scum have.
ok....so obama should drag us out of the middle east right? Are we spending any less now? How will obama improve things, he might put a little more money in the pocket of jerkoffs like you so you can buy more weed and playstation games, but overall he will hurt business, republicans are UP in congressional polls only 100 days into golden boys term, america certainly has buyers remorse
This mess was a Dem created mess. It's getting worse as they play socialism and elitist corrupted games to make more crisis. Americans are beginning to figure his hope and change garbage is a bunch of hooey.
Screw the Republican party, I think they need to have their heads examined. Bush and the rest of the Republicans got us into this shit hole and now the Democrates will get us out.
Gov. Jindal needs ot be run out of off for the stupid path he's suggesting.
Pilgrim's Pride has rejected Governor Jindal`s $60 million offer for its Farmerville chicken processing complex, but made a counterproposal to Gov. Bobby Jindal for $80 million. Jindal right hand man said, Jindal planned to contact potential buyers, including Foster Farms, this weekend to discuss Pilgrims counterproposal.
Too bad more governors (and regular people) weren't like Jindal. People need to stop looking at the government for a handout every time something wrong happens in their life.
All these Republicans don't believe in big government. But look how many have spent their entire adult lives in big government. Being in big government has been very lucrative for Republicans as well as Democrats. Many are far wealthier now than what they were when they were in office. This "big government" thing is what they use to make them look different than the Democrats. It means nothing. Both parties are the same.
The US manufactures 2.5 times more things than China. We sell industrial goods which few consumers ever see. China sells consumer goods which are visible in every store...
Devotees of free market economics missed a fundamental lesson of macro economics 101. The point is not to have fee markets, its to have efficient markets. Efficient markets require free flow of information (transparency). Regulation that required mortgage brokers be licensed, financial rating agencies look at the securities that underly what is being traded and set reserve requirements for selling credit default swaps would have avoided this catastrophy by creating an efficient market..
Brooks, a conservative voice, for fiscal responsibility, reminds us that fiscal responsibility requires some form of engagement, management, and investment.
Nihilism. Wow!
Its as if the party says, "We have decided to stand down from economic leadership and become the idealogical auditor for the nation".
We need both parties engaged in order to be successful ...
Bobby Jindal is a RACIST! The way he spoke of poor black Katrina victims like it's some sort of happy tale just shows his true color. Jindal deserves to be convicted of Hate Crime and sent behind bars for life. Despicable racists like him have no place in our country.
He didn't use a teleprompter?? Are you blind? You can actually see his eyes moving! He's reading...and giving you the benefit of the doubt (not) let's say he didn't use one. HE SHOULD!! He sucked...completely. PRESIDENT Obama didn't. Clear, concise, with substance, gravitas. Jindal? Weak, at best. Sorry.
Well, like it or not, Barack Hussein Obama is your president now...and you Republicans have only yourselves to blame...because if they hadn't f**ked up SO INCREDIBLY BADLY like ol' Dubya did, Barack Hussein Obama wouldn't have gotten elected.
You've made your bed....now you have to sleep in it.
Though maybe if you hadn't been sleeping at the time, the Bush administration wouldn't have been able to get away with all the crimes they did.
bush shoulda used a teleprompter, i guess he kinda made it up as he went, although you did not vote for him, your president is Barak Huessein Obama,,,,,,hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, actually looking back on your last few comments, Decider, you coulda been a bush speech writer.
Jindal's proposed "solution" isn't the rhetorically beautiful phrase of "believing in you, the American people", its "don't look at us, if you're in trouble, your on your own! OH, but pay your taxes!! ON TIME YOU UNGRATEFUL LEECHES!! Pure brillance. Obama is doing exactly what he
said he was going to do during the campaign. 67 million Americans signed off on his plans in November. They told the GOP loud and clear that these "ideas" of theirs...SHOVE THEM!!
Jefferson also said, "...I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State". Righties are notorious for cherry-picking when it comes to Jefferson.
A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government. Thomas Jefferson
Perhaps you could offer up an explanation of how the liberal philosophy is consistent with that?
I'll never understand why anyone opposes small government. Liberty takes a backseat to convenience
see, the thing is, the government IS the people, the people ELECT the government. it is unfortunate that conservatives got control of OUR government in 2000 and destroyed it from within and now feel NO responsibility whatsoever to own up and fix it. Our government is how the conservatives have crafted it.
That shows a fundamental misunderstanding of our constitution and the principles our founding fathers stood for. They set up a form of government that factored in human nature and its inclination to be selfish and made it work for us. Our current government acts as if all human beings are perfect and thus minimizes the efficiency of programs while simultaneously maximize their abuse.
Perhaps you could provide specific examples of our federal government running something efficiently.
You will not be able to cite any examples. Any social program you list is outperformed by the private sector. Whether it be the mail, or retirement or health care or welfare etc.
You are delegating inordinate amounts of power to an organization (term used loosely) that has repeatedly proved it is inept and insufficient to meet the needs of its citizens.
Perhaps you would benefit from reading through the constitution and then making a determination as to what exactly gov'ts role is.
The rightwing wackos are just looking for the next new Neo-Con to push through their policies of war, persecution and greed. Only Ron Paul can save the (R) brand - with a true Libertarian agenda.
And Obama is more of a centrist than a true socialist, but Neo-Cons see anyone left of them as evil commies - including Norway and Canada... LOL.
The GOP is DEAD. maybe Socialism IS the answer after all. The GOP has ruined the country with its capitalistic greed. Nice try with the all the gimmicks but it didn't work.
Wrong. Despite your disdain for self-determination, your attempt to relabel something into something it's not makes no less true the fact that this was corporate socialism. And that's still socialism.
hahaha...what piece of far-right propaganda did you pick up that little nugget from...?
The thing you're obviously and conveniently forgetting is that ol Dubya had done more to erode your civil liberties than any other president in history, with his so-called 'Patriot' act.
How could taking a big, steamy dump on the Constitution be considered *patriotic* in any way, shape, or form...??
this is not a product of an unregulated dirrivative market allowing bundles of bad mortgages to be sold as securities, 9TR for 1TR worth of real estate? coupled with massive lax enforcement and oversight of loan practices and loan qualifications, with a big part of these credit ratings firms not doing their job of even knowing what they were rating. starting the snowball effect with the insurance industry that had no idea what they were insuring (AIG) and moving downward through the banks,
to call this corporate socialism insults corporate socialism,,,,THIS IS SOCIALIZING THE LOSSES, however nescessary to avoid the collapse of the dollar that is not far away with inaction. do you think we can rebound from a depression with absolutley no manufacturing base?
Certainly not, though that doesn't preclude the rekindling of our manufacturing base, albeit purged of the over-unionized leeches and over taxation, which would bring it back much faster. Nobody wants to buy an over-expensive car of the same quality as cheaper foreign cars. Unions, while initially a good idea, have over reached their usefulness, and are little more than legalized racketeering outfits.
That is the way that Fannie Mae has always operated...All profits go to private banks and all losses go to the government in the first 70 years Fannie Mae gave 1 trillion dollars worth of secured loans But in the late 1990's Clinton changed the requirements In the past 10 the number has jumped to 4 trillion.. But they don't have the financial regulations of banks or Sarbanes Oxley. I am glad that you realized it now.
Keep in mind that we are still the number one manufacturer in the world..
Yes I am sure... But its not the number of things we produce..China produces a lot of low value stuff but a ton of it. Its the value of things that we produce that matters. Most doomsayers point to the manufacturing as a percentage of the economy has declined. But the overall out put over the past few years is increasing...
Democrat politicians also bullied banks into giving those loans to the "poor" high risk applicants with threats of lawsuit if they didn't comply. Welfare housing? Maybe you'll be able to say no, since it wasn't officially on the law books.
If you think that Clinton eliminated all financial rules your smoking something... Or that Reagan unregulated everything its factually not true and your dreaming.
The crisis occurred because of 4 trillion loan guarantees to Fannie Mae.... They were a government sponsor enterprise which means from the start that all profits go to private banks but all losses go to the government. Clinton eliminated rules for participation in FM. All of this is Government intervention and not the free market.
lol Wow they are huge waiting lines of people waiting to move to Sweden. Sweden has 40 percent of the entire stock market owned by 1 family the Wallenbergs. They incredibly regressive taxes. Such as 25% national sales tax but the US doesn't. 33% payroll tax and But the US has half that. They have a lower corporate tax than the US. 28% to 40% in the US.
Socialism is still dead even Sweden has privatized sold state industries.
are you stupid? brooks is a conservative...and china may officially be run by the communist party, but it has adopted capitalism since the late 80s. where have u been? still pursuing your GED I take it...
Personally I'm neutral on the matter, the federal goverment should be a part of it of the solutions to the credit crisis, but it shouldn't be the sole solution.
Where's this guys argument? Up his ass, just like he's talking out of it.
Jindal is a nice enough guy but the LAST thing this country needs is yet ANOTHER Republican leader INCAPABLE of seeing BEYOND "Reagan" (CREDIT CARD "conservatism").
The GOP has been a joke for so long. One man (Ron Paul) has the ability to think OUTSIDE the (self-imposed) Reagan box. The other 99% are clueless. But then I consider Ron Paul a libertarian more than a Republican. He's too smart for that gang of idiots.
Oh they are calling Jindal crazy now? After he TRANSFORMED LOUISIANA? Doesn't surprise me at all. That' the first label our neo-Feudalist lords put on people who say what is true. After all... they killed Galileo, Socrates, and Jesus too. Let those be examples for us.
The shit eating grin on Brooks face gives away his embarassment, guilt, and lies.
first,,,transformed louisiana into what? and are you really putting kenny the page from 30 rock into the same class as JESUS, GALILEO, SOCRATES???????????? they killed galileo, socrates, and Jesus too??????you may be what is commonly referred to as the "crazy right" jindal just came off as a rube, with a plan of inaction. hard to be the voice of a miserable failure of policy that is the last 8 years of "conservative" rule. YOU own torture and that unitary executive thing, remember and wear that
Peace. The last 8 years of 'conservative rule' have actually been quite the opposite of inaction -- have you noticed? Patriot act, two foreign wars, stimulus checks, war on drugs, the so-called "conservative" Republican party has contributed to the ruination of our country with their excessive spending (granted, everyone helped put us in this mess, yes even me and you). YOU own torture too... pay income tax lately? Our conservatives have been socialists all the way. Obama is no different.
The Bush Years were all about deficit spending on everything... Huge spending increases in every department. The problem was spending and the solution is even more spending on domestic issue?? WTH? Democrats campaigned won on fiscal responsiblity less than 18 months later they changed their tune... They want to solve the financial crisis.. with 50 billion dollars of spending on birth control... That policy change flip flop is like something out of 1984...

This turd Brooks is a PBS conservative. If you have ever seen him you know he is the most milquetoast conservative you could ever find. That fact is manly men are conservative. Liberals tend to think like women. This guy is no conservative..............When President Obummer fails..........The Republicans are going to look like geniuses. And Obummer WILL fail. I am sorry to say this because I do not expect my savings to be worth much when he is done with his misbegotten schemes
Your just saying that because you don't agree or HATE on Obama so course and your eyes he will fail... But if the econmoy under Obama gets better thats the death of the Republican party and its long history..Farewell
Abolish the federal reserve, this guy didnt say anything besides that the federal government is finally big enough to take over the union of the united states (:40) and hes all for it. he does work for the new york times which is obama propaganda
David Brooks is an idiot. FDR tried to "stimulate" and it was more like a "depressant" during the depression. Real employment did not improve until WW2. If they let me keep my money may be I can spend half of it and save half of it (which the bank can lend). Hey idiot, government is not an engine of growth, it's a Caboose.
Having immigrated to USA from a third world country, I get a sense of DejaVu reading the comments here. Back home, havenots demonize the haves like a lynch mob.
My name is Trevor Gilmore of Ohio and I need your help to win a scholarship. I am in a contest at this site called zinch please go there and vote for me or ask me more about it Thank you.
Brooks is absolutely right. Would the capitalist system fix itself eventually? Sure. But I'd rather not see half my friends and family lose their jobs, homes, and food. The government has a chance to prevent that from happening and I think they're on the right track.
Jindal is just about socialism for the rich. A neo-feudalist society were the working class will be satisfied with the leftovers their landlord(banks) throw at them. Were there is no separation of church and state and bishops and holy men tell us how to live our lives.
You are referring to the democrats and the church of global warming are you not? Get a clue. Everything government touches turns to shit. Its the reverse Midas touch......and President Obummer will be an epic fail.
Pollution is a real and empirically testable externality for which collective action is apparently necessary. Governments do have a space in society. Fire departments, police, mail, roads, bridges, laws, the list goes on... The only problem is that stupid radical ideology that says all government is bad. We elect the government... the reason it does not work sometimes is because of the stupid Republicans they elect which WANT government to fail in the first place.
Ideology doesn't matter in times of emergency. This is one of them and, left or right, we should all be pulling together for the good of the country. The problem with Jindal's speech - and Republican congressional tactics - is that they're all about politics. Let's not argue in a burning building, ladies and gentlemen, but approach this problem as if it were war.
You must be nuts. Democrats are nothing if not all politics. The opposition to Iraq was solely based on political gain...and there were lives involved. You think they are going to cut you some slack in anything regarding money? Terribly misguided. Absolutely blind. Horribly naive.
the explatives i would use here had you said that somewhere in earshot of me would really not do purpose to the idea that anyone who would oppose a war of occupation in an arab heartland country, fought in an urban setting, at a great cost in souls and treasure, would be "solely political" F you for that and do not underestimate how many current and former Marines now consider them selves dems because of that. I would like to hear your justification for that war and see if it is not political
Yeah while they're at it,they should push themselves out. They are the moderate Republicans just like Brooks. The correct name is Neo-conservative, which is an oxy-moron.The Neo aspect is no where close to true conservativism. It is closer to fascism & socialism. It relies on defecit spending, which is what the Dems are doing right now but at an even bigger rate. The spending is the problem but most people are blind to this. You cant spend yourself out of a problem that was caused by overspending.
Another fake conservative whose policies led to this crisis. The government HAS been involved for the last few decades. They artificially interfere with the free market and then pretend that we really have a true free market. They havent followed free market capitalism. Thats the problem. Bush did not follow conservative viewpoints. He spent us into oblivion. And now we are supposed to spend even more. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over & expecting a different result.
Thank you! Jindel should shut his mouth and let President Obama do what he is doing he will see that everything is used up correctly, OH! and NO JINDAL '12!!! STAY IN Louisiana!!!!!
Blah blah. This guy doesn't understand history. This government was born out of the idea that the government wouldn't interfere with people - good or bad times. The governments role was to protect its people from outsiders... not make life fair. This guy is ignorant IMHO.
Republicans are a slave to ideology. When the economy breaks down you can scream about ideology but if the government has the capaibility to keep a family in their home until the economy comes back. Why shouldnt it? These same people have made the rich billions, given them priviledged lives. To abandon these normal people in their hour of need is inhuman.
It's better to do nothing than to try something insane and stupid like the porkulus bill and fail horribly. At least you can't be blamed for screwing things up if you do nothing. You can only be called "heartless" and other epithets thrown by the Left.
Um, what happened to ambition in this country? Is that your answer? Do nothing? There's some exciting pull your bootstraps up attitude. I hope Americans are more thoughtful and ambitious than your comment.
If the Democrats did nothing you would be crying all the same... you fucking baby. We have to help fellow Americans. We had 1,000 people applying for a fireman job which only had 36 openings. I don't know where you live but people need help.
David Brooks?? Lol! I'm not a conservative, but I can smell a fake one when I see it. And Brooks is the very definition of a fake conservative/Republican. He's a neocon big spending d-bag who supports the welfare state. No wonder the NY Times hired him.
I mean, you really think the NY Times is gonna hire a REAL conservative to write for them?
Yea I felt extremely awkward as well watching him last night. I had to drink some hard liquor after his speech to get my testosterone back because I felt SO "sissified" and "verbally molested" lmao
What Obama wants to do is the opposite of Clinton he wants to increase spending... Increase regulation... Increase welfare... decrease free trade.. Obama is doing the exact opposite what Clinton did in the 1990's and now he thinks he is going to get the same outcome in the 1990's ?
If we really want to improve the economy why don't we do what Clinton did... Pass large free trade deals like NAFTA. Deregulate the economy like the 1996 telecommunications act. Cut the capital gains tax by one third like Clinton did in 1997. Restrict spending by .4 percent.
because we have to pay off the 5 TRILLION dollar deficit left by the party voted in by the dumbass fuckers who *wanted to have a beer* with Bush. FIVE TRILLION Republican spent dollars.
Double digit increases in funding for every White House Cabinet Position. . Increasing the national budget from 2.2 in 2001 to 3.0 trillion in 2008.
2 highway bills for 700 billion.
Democrats campaigned for spending restraint Pay as you go promises... They won the election. Which were abandoned before the financial crisis.
With all of this spending the Republicans lost control of Congress and the White House and now Obama thinks that the American people want huge spending increases?
The GOP has been hijacked by war-mongering neoconservatives. I fear that the days of true conservatism are over, which is bad news indeed for true conservatives.
The problem with the budget is not defense spending... It represents very little of the federal budget compared to entitlement spending. We could eliminate the entire defense budget (which would require firing every solider and general) and not even come close to the amount of money needed to cover entitlement spending. Which Bush expanded...
David Brooks is usually pretty diplomatic and conciliatory on his views, this is as close as I've heard him come to saying "these people are idiots" on national television.
What? Bullied by the House? Yeah right, he was *bullied* into giving a trillion dollars to Paulson to pass out to all the banking buddies who contributed to his campaign. Turn OFF Fox Noise and pay attention to the REAL world.
REAL world not only did bush bail out the banks Obama gives them more money bails out the auto industries600 mill in new GREEN cars for the us govt Grants to colleges that have millions of there own
Pelosi is the one calling the shots She was the one writing this spending bill Obama is just a patsy which is sad He is not the guy I voted for....
take your lips off of Rush's tool and start listening to REAL news, not rightwing propaganda. Mysoganistic fearmongering is so OVER. It's also obvious who you voted for ROFL!!!!
Take your head out of your ass and start mking your own decsions I did vote OBAMA hes just not the guy that said he would bring change he brought the same fucking thing..think about it..rightwing left wing your all the same.you should come down from the crak clouds every now and then and let your head clear up a bit
David Brooks is one of the few republicans I respect. He is an intellectual heavyweight. His critiques of democrats are fair and insightful. And he admits that his Republicans are basically wrong on every significant issue before the country. This gives his BLUDGEONING of Jindal all the more weight.
"intellectual" is a rare word in discribing a republican. But I agree with you while I don't really like the way things are being handled by the Democrates I do think they are at least making an effort to solve the problem and at the very least Obama's heart is in the right place. I found Jindal's speech insulting towards Obama he comes up their with story's and postive talk while sounding sarcasitc then talks about how the party has made mistakes in one breath and repeating them in the next.
Does Brooks ever look at the polls? He thinks the American people don't like the way the stimulus bill was passed? Congressional approval ratings jumped 12 points, to it's highest level in two years according to Gallup.
Other than that Brooks was actually right for once; the Republicans are out of their minds...
And how can you even THINK that what Obama's doing is 'wasteful spending'? The guy's pushing for renewable energy, healthcare, and higher education! Doesn't get much better than that. He's also set up a website where you can go and see where every dollar is being spend, right down to specific jobs in specific states. Bush passed that TARP bill with absolutely zero oversight, and 350 billion just happened to go missing. oops. If you ask me, THAT, plus the Iraq war, is about as wasteful as it gets
I think Bobby Jindal can now kiss his presidential ambitions goodbye. The Republican brand is already tainted, and he just made it look worse. There must be some intelligent, reasonable Republicans around somewhere. Where are they? Are the Republicans doomed to become a regional party led by blowhards like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin? It looks like it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So the Bush years were all about deficit spending and bridge to nowhere infrastructures spending. Now Obama wants to follow the same strategy... Good luck...
Democrats were elected because they promised to spend less than the spend thrift Republicans... Now the Democrats are spending even more than the Republican Congress has in one bill...
First, Bush (a republican) passed TARP, a 700 billion dollar bailout for the finnancial institutions. He did this with almost zero oversight, and guess what happened? 350 billion just happened to go missing. oops. and the rest, who knows if it's really going to help. THAT is stupid spending. Obama would have never had to pass his new rescue plan if he had been given the country in good shape. But since Bush and the rest of the republicans F*CKED THE USA IN THE ASS, Obama had to do what he had to
TARP was a screw up by committe and there is plenty of blame to go around...It was a bipartisan screw up. Democrats Tim Geitner Barney Frank and Chris Dodd also had a large part in crafting the legislation... Bush signed off on it..
If the country had been in good shape. Yes if Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. had not blocked legislation that limited Fannie Mae in 2001 2003 and 2005 2006. In fact Frank called FM fundamentally sound... When Bush was said that FM could cripple the entire econ.
If you look at Obama's political contributers, the list is primarily banks; the biggest being Citygroup, who is also taking the most money from TARP. I believe that Obama "owes" them for these huge contributions, and while he IS making the USA better with his rescue plan (clean energy, healthcare, education), it does come at a price.
Your right.. He recieved a ton of money from them... But your proving my point. Obama is not a break with President Bush's economy policies... He is continuing them...
Obama and Bush wanted bailouts. Spending increases for the poor. Increasing entitlement spending. A military surge in the middle east...
The banks would have done what they are doing either way, no matter who got in power... because when it comes down to it, THEY are always in power. What do you think would have happened if Mccain was able to initiate his spending freeze. The unemployment rate would be 20% +
Well, davidmesaaz - I guess you're right. Spent uranium contaminating the Iraqi desert is exactly comparable to new schools, and a stronger energy infrastructure. It's less about the spending, than what you get for it. I know very few businesses that have not engaged in deficit spending, when they got good value for it. You might deficit spend to get a new mixer for your bakery. I don't know of a new car dealership that doesn't have a bank-backed floor plan. Your solution is...?

It's unfortunate that conservatives believe more in the people than they do the government?
Really?
Wow.
bigoldfashen 2 years ago
see, the thing is, the government IS the people, the people ELECT the government. it is unfortunate that conservatives got control of OUR government in 2000 and destroyed it from within and now feel NO responsibility whatsoever to own up and fix it. Our government is how the conservatives have crafted it.
natesworld23 2 years ago
That shows a fundamental misunderstanding of our constitution and the principles our founding fathers stood for. They set up a form of government that factored in human nature and its inclination to be selfish and made it work for us. Our current government acts as if all human beings are perfect and thus minimizes the efficiency of programs while simultaneously maximize their abuse.
Perhaps you could provide specific examples of our federal government running something efficiently.
bigoldfashen 2 years ago 2
You will not be able to cite any examples. Any social program you list is outperformed by the private sector. Whether it be the mail, or retirement or health care or welfare etc.
You are delegating inordinate amounts of power to an organization (term used loosely) that has repeatedly proved it is inept and insufficient to meet the needs of its citizens.
Perhaps you would benefit from reading through the constitution and then making a determination as to what exactly gov'ts role is.

this is not a product of an unregulated dirrivative market allowing bundles of bad mortgages to be sold as securities, 9TR for 1TR worth of real estate? coupled with massive lax enforcement and oversight of loan practices and loan qualifications, with a big part of these credit ratings firms not doing their job of even knowing what they were rating. starting the snowball effect with the insurance industry that had no idea what they were insuring (AIG) and moving downward through the banks,
natesworld23 2 years ago
to call this corporate socialism insults corporate socialism,,,,THIS IS SOCIALIZING THE LOSSES, however nescessary to avoid the collapse of the dollar that is not far away with inaction. do you think we can rebound from a depression with absolutley no manufacturing base?
natesworld23 2 years ago
Certainly not, though that doesn't preclude the rekindling of our manufacturing base, albeit purged of the over-unionized leeches and over taxation, which would bring it back much faster. Nobody wants to buy an over-expensive car of the same quality as cheaper foreign cars. Unions, while initially a good idea, have over reached their usefulness, and are little more than legalized racketeering outfits.
QuartuvLarry 2 years ago
That is the way that Fannie Mae has always operated...All profits go to private banks and all losses go to the government in the first 70 years Fannie Mae gave 1 trillion dollars worth of secured loans But in the late 1990's Clinton changed the requirements In the past 10 the number has jumped to 4 trillion.. But they don't have the financial regulations of banks or Sarbanes Oxley. I am glad that you realized it now.
Keep in mind that we are still the number one manufacturer in the world..
davidmesaaz 2 years ago
Are you sure that the U.S. still produces more good than China?
If that is true today I don't think it will be for long.
kingsdun 2 years ago
Yes I am sure... But its not the number of things we produce..China produces a lot of low value stuff but a ton of it. Its the value of things that we produce that matters. Most doomsayers point to the manufacturing as a percentage of the economy has declined. But the overall out put over the past few years is increasing...

Democrat politicians also bullied banks into giving those loans to the "poor" high risk applicants with threats of lawsuit if they didn't comply. Welfare housing? Maybe you'll be able to say no, since it wasn't officially on the law books.
QuartuvLarry 2 years ago
If you think that Clinton eliminated all financial rules your smoking something... Or that Reagan unregulated everything its factually not true and your dreaming.
The crisis occurred because of 4 trillion loan guarantees to Fannie Mae.... They were a government sponsor enterprise which means from the start that all profits go to private banks but all losses go to the government. Clinton eliminated rules for participation in FM. All of this is Government intervention and not the free market.

Who's talking about bringing our troops home? Iraq and Afghanistan aren't the only countries where we have them. There are about 138 more.

Pollution is a real and empirically testable externality for which collective action is apparently necessary. Governments do have a space in society. Fire departments, police, mail, roads, bridges, laws, the list goes on... The only problem is that stupid radical ideology that says all government is bad. We elect the government... the reason it does not work sometimes is because of the stupid Republicans they elect which WANT government to fail in the first place.
exinferiz 2 years ago 2
Ideology doesn't matter in times of emergency. This is one of them and, left or right, we should all be pulling together for the good of the country. The problem with Jindal's speech - and Republican congressional tactics - is that they're all about politics. Let's not argue in a burning building, ladies and gentlemen, but approach this problem as if it were war.
DwelfGimble 2 years ago 2

Yeah while they're at it,they should push themselves out. They are the moderate Republicans just like Brooks. The correct name is Neo-conservative, which is an oxy-moron.The Neo aspect is no where close to true conservativism. The spending is the problem but most people are blind to this. You cant spend yourself out of a problem that was caused by overspending.

David Brooks is usually pretty diplomatic and conciliatory on his views, this is as close as I've heard him come to saying "these people are idiots" on national television.

David Brooks is one of the few republicans I respect. He is an intellectual heavyweight. His critiques of democrats are fair and insightful. And he admits that his Republicans are basically wrong on every significant issue before the country. This gives his BLUDGEONING of Jindal all the more weight.
laxjok2001 2 years ago 3
"intellectual" is a rare word in discribing a republican. But I agree with you while I don't really like the way things are being handled by the Democrates I do think they are at least making an effort to solve the problem and at the very least Obama's heart is in the right place. I found Jindal's speech insulting towards Obama he comes up their with story's and postive talk while sounding sarcasitc then talks about how the party has made mistakes in one breath and repeating them in the next.

I love how democratic intellectuals totally ignore the overwhelming evidence in support of free trade....
Over the past 30 years Republican presidents have funded sciences more and not less than Democratic ones..

Bush passed that TARP bill with absolutely zero oversight, and 350 billion just happened to go missing. oops. If you ask me, THAT, plus the Iraq war, is about as wasteful as it gets

well said, my man!!

Obamas web page is very vauge
there is some spending that isnt great 600 mill for green cars for gov offs
120 mill new sod for WH lawn
750 billion spent and almost no one read the bill cause it was so big

vague? Reading comprehension skills are required -- and spelling helps too.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
So the Bush years were all about deficit spending and bridge to nowhere infrastructures spending. Now Obama wants to follow the same strategy... Good luck...
Democrats were elected because they promised to spend less than the spend thrift Republicans... Now the Democrats are spending even more than the Republican Congress has in one bill...
davidmesaaz 2 years ago
spend thrift republicans is an oxymoron -- how MUCH did they spend on Iraq? How much money was voted to Iraq that disappeared?
HolyHannah 2 years ago
First, Bush (a republican) passed TARP, a 700 billion dollar bailout for the finnancial institutions. He did this with almost zero oversight, and guess what happened? 350 billion just happened to go missing. oops. and the rest, who knows if it's really going to help. THAT is stupid spending. Obama would have never had to pass his new rescue plan if he had been given the country in good shape. But since Bush and the rest of the republicans F*CKED THE USA IN THE ASS, Obama had to do what he had to
musicmsnger 2 years ago 5
He can't unilaterally pass legislation douche. Who is controlling Congress? Stop this partisan shit, they're all stupid.

AMEN
going further in debt to come out of it not so smart on both sides
cs837 2 years ago
right on!!!
XMADDMARSX 2 years ago
TARP was a screw up by committe and there is plenty of blame to go around...It was a bipartisan screw up. Democrats Tim Geitner Barney Frank and Chris Dodd also had a large part in crafting the legislation... Bush signed off on it..
If the country had been in good shape. Yes if Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. had not blocked legislation that limited Fannie Mae in 2001 2003 and 2005 2006. In fact Frank called FM fundamentally sound... When Bush was said that FM could cripple the entire econ.
davidmesaaz 2 years ago
If you look at Obama's political contributers, the list is primarily banks; the biggest being Citygroup, who is also taking the most money from TARP. I believe that Obama "owes" them for these huge contributions, and while he IS making the USA better with his rescue plan (clean energy, healthcare, education), it does come at a price.
musicmsnger 2 years ago
Your right.. He recieved a ton of money from them... But your proving my point. Obama is not a break with President Bush's economy policies... He is continuing them...
Obama and Bush wanted bailouts. Spending increases for the poor. Increasing entitlement spending. A military surge in the middle east...
davidmesaaz 2 years ago
The banks would have done what they are doing either way, no matter who got in power... because when it comes down to it, THEY are always in power. What do you think would have happened if Mccain was able to initiate his spending freeze. The unemployment rate would be 20% +
musicmsnger 2 years ago
Well, davidmesaaz - I guess you're right. Spent uranium contaminating the Iraqi desert is exactly comparable to new schools, and a stronger energy infrastructure. It's less about the spending, than what you get for it. I know very few businesses that have not engaged in deficit spending, when they got good value for it. You might deficit spend to get a new mixer for your bakery. I don't know of a new car dealership that doesn't have a bank-backed floor plan. Your solution is...?
