How much richer our soundtracks were when we had Bernard Hermann, John Barry, Edwin Astley ... etc. I'm fortunate enough to have grown up to the film and tv composers of the 50s, 60s and 70s, who left me with warm memories decades later - a testament to their superlative talent.

I recently heard a composer on Radio 3 describe current Hollywood soundtracks as poorly conceived racket. Very true. Can you imagine what the theme to Bullitt would be like if commissioned now?

@herringfly My good sir, I believe you forget a select few composers who bring true art to the music world. Hans Zimmer, Craig Armstrong, Clint Manstell and dozens more.

@daedilus5 There's no question that there are still talented composers working in film but for me the older scores have a particular quality that isn't present in more recent work. That isn't a criticism of the composers, I think it's more to do with the industry - everything has to move at 100mph, there doesn't seem to be time to weave a score like Lawrence of Arabia, for instance. I suppose it can't be easy being presented with Kung Fu Panda and The Incredible Hulk to score.
