Both pickups are actually humbuckers. Untapped the neck pickup is a humbucker, but it's stacked - one coil under the other instead of the typical one coil next to the other. It's kinda like a P-90 with a coil slung under it for hum cancelling. Tapped it becomes a single coil, just like the bridge pickup. When you tap the neck you get a really nice and pretty single coil tone. I love it with a little delay and overdrive while playing No Rain, for example.
So basically I can blend bumbucker and single coil at the same time is what you are saying? Can I also accomplish les paul style tones with this? Not to be rude but I really hate what I am hearing in most of this video. I find the sounds extremely generic. Or is that the playing and amp settings? It sucks because I can't find a single other video showing off this guitar but this one.
@brainboob I've had this guitar for about eight months now and it is a great guitar. It plays so smooth. When I firs got it I wasn't pleased with the sound but I swapped out the Duncan Design and put a Suhr Aldrich in and that was the key. The single coil sounds are really sweet. I play mostly hard rock, Classic rock.
Can you get genuine les paul style ones with it? That is very important to me, because I am more of a melodic player, as opposed to a blues player. I am not a fan of single coil, but I like the fact that I can blend some single coil sounds with humbucker to get a versatile tone option.
@brainboob I have a 1978 Les Paul and Suhr Aldrich humbuckers in it as well and I can say that no, you can't replicate the sound of that instrument with the Schecter. However, they are comparable & the difference isn't as great as you would think. Both are mahogany bodies with glued on necks. The Les Paul has more of a growl and thicker tone but the sustain is nearly identical. In fact, I can coax the same amount out of both guitars. Also, pinch harmonics on the Les Paul are slightly more dynamic
@brainboob Also, the Les Paul is heavier and thicker which changes the tone compared to the schecter. I play both instruments live and they share equal time on the stage.
@brainboob Well I don't have the time or gear to make that video but if you go to my youtube page you can find two or three videos of me playing this guitar live with my band at a recent street dance. Not the best video quality but it's close to the sound I'm getting. In person it's a little clearer. And I'm using a Tube Amp, a Jet City JCA50 with a 2x12 Cab loaded with Eminence Gov's.
With the switching & tapping options the guitar is pretty versatile: Neck: Untapped - humbucker sound, tapped - mellow single coil; Bridge: Untapped - Humbucker, Tapped - Hotter Single Coil. Then you can put the switch in the middle and have: Untapped, Untapped - Tapped, Untapped - Untapped, Tapped - Tapped, Tapped. Hope this is making sense. I know it can be confusing trying to visualize. In a nutshell you won't have single coil one all the time. You can go either way on both.
You split the neck pickup, leave the humbucker untapped and the put the selector switch in the middle to get both. Reverse the tap/untapped above for the opposite.
Wait, I am not understanding something, please help me. Isn't the neck pickup already a p90 style? Why does it need to be tapped then? And what happens when you tap it? Does it reverse the pick up and give you humbucker sounds? Sorry, I don't get it. I would hate it if I had to have single coil sounds in one of the pickups all the time.
The neck pickup is actually not a P90 style pick up. It's more a P100 which is kind of like two P90's stacked together. It's a humbucker of a slightly different flavor. The pickup sounds pretty sweet when tapped, though you do lose some volume. Untapped is where some people don't like it, but I think it has some usefulness, though it's more limited. I use it for songs like Lighting Crashes and Other side. The "true" humbucker at the bridge has decent hot single pickup sound split.
I've owned one of these for several months now and I'm still very pleased with it. If you want a mid priced guitar with a Gibsonesque feel but with a little single coil versatility this guitar is an excellent choice. When I took it out of the box the set up was perfect and the guitar was flawless. I have also been happy with the Duncan Designed pickups.
I just picked this guitar up and it is spectacular. Flawless construction. Nice action on arrival. Perfect intonation. And the sound you hear on this video is very accurate to how it sounds in real life. The only thing that's missing in this video is an example of the pinch harmonics you can get with this thing. Awesome.
I guess you could call it weaker. On any pickup (not just a humbucker, 'Doh!), there will be less output (volume & gain) and the sound will be brighter and clearer. A tapped humbucker can sound kinda-sorta like a single coil.
When the pickup is tapped, does that mean that 1 or 2 of them are active? I know that the actual coil tapping can change it from humbucker to single, but when it's "tapped" which setting is it?
when he did both un tapped there was one riff where he played real light and it was so clean but then he'd hit a chord and it was delightfully gritty. Good response from those pickups in that position!
