  • To me the song is Great...nice version here,,

  • waauw, this is excellent!

  • No bad for a Kiwi LOL

  • DAAS is best

  • Neil is always impressive, but will always have to agree that its Marks song, and his raw emotion when he sings it, is unsurpassed.

  • One of the best singers ever

  • sorry guys but a bit gay compared to the raw power of the Hunners.... & Im a Kiwi not an Aussie

  • ...and certainly among the people I know too.

  • Seems last name Finn exist NOT only in fairytales like Huckleberry Finn.

  • A nice delicate rendition of a song made famous by a guy with a very deep and rasp voice, Hunters & Collectors are Aussie legends Neil Finn is A Kiwi legend, but it is all good Kiwi Aussie or Aussie Kiwi it's all the same, as far as I am concerned.

  • Fantastic Neil ,Tune! Dj(Unite)Mc - UK.

  • New Zelands finest!

  • I will never ever get sick of his voice. Heaven.

  • Freaking brilliant! Neil ages very well I might add, but man his voice is AH mazing!!

  • love this......

  • great songwriter, check out uk band kulu's video change of heart on youtube

  • My all-time favorite poet.

  • Neil Finn is one of the greatest!! His rendition is from the heart and soul of a great singer.

  • I usually like Neil, but I do not think he does this millenial classic justice. I am sure if I had not heard the original I would have been enthralled

  • I wonder if Sharon inspires his songs...they are so wonderful. She is one lucky woman

  • A great song and Neil sings it from the heart and soul.

  • MAKES ME CRY...ITS SO HONEST

  • This song is just amazing.

  • He's hot and talented!

  • Definitely a Hit...Such Beautiful song!..:-)

  • I think this might just be my most favourite song ever..bliss

  • neil has this way of turning emotion into music. to me in my humble opinion that is what music is. shit thats not his song is it? heh heh oh well. I still mean it!

  • Nice.

  • bloody amazin, this is perfection, I must admit i listen to Vedders version a lot, but this was wonderful, and your right..better be home soon, is a beautiful song, im off to listen to it now.

  • proud-porn?

  • @longisland45 proudPOM!

  • heyy, that realy was funny, I mean from Longisland :-)))

the song was made great thanks

  • @proudpom in lower case it at a glance it does kind of look like proudporn.

  • @jakeyw11 yeah I know, I've been changing my username on most sites for that reason!

  • Playing this well live without all the usual studio 'Magic' really shows raw talent at it's best

  • youtube.com/watch?v=C1AUN1pBOsQ&feature=related

    Wow makes neil look amatureish!

  • This rendition is soothing perfection. What a master of his craft is Mr Finn.

  • this song HAS to have the desperation mark brings to it. ( we may never meet again )...

  • fantastic, i didn't know there was a conection between crouded house and H & C! so there you go

  • Beautiful, beautiful song.... thankyou Mark Seymour for this gift to us all.... Neil, nice version ....and finally, thanks for the update proudpom ... very cool song... love it!!

  • Hey Erika, nice to hear i'm not alone on this one. I remember a break up a few years ago that involved a half dozen bottles of red and my collection of crowded house cd's. These guys deserve a place in music history much larger than they currently enjoy.

  • Must say that the one band I have never been ashamed to admit absolutely worshipping, no matter what company I may be in are crowded house. These guys got me through break ups, clean ups, fuck ups and just as many downs. I would say that in the annals of absolutely unashamed pop music these guys are right at the pinnacle. Plus another thing I love about their stuff is that even a mediocre singer and guitarist like myself can sing their stuff and have it sound better than a phonebook lol.

  • @raff32 I agree completely. This band has been my emotional go-to for soothing whatever ails me. Neil Finn is amazing.

  • Nice.

  • Beautiful

  • i dunno, he's good but Eddie Vedder sings its WAY better....WAY WAY better...

  • Thats an amzing comment i would love to hear that man sing the phonebook kiwi dialect ist super Geil in musik form i believe ich ben in deutschland but ich komme aus kiwiland...I love this mans music ( he was enlightened) way ahead of his time....like every amazing musician

  • magic

  • Pure gold....crisp, beautiful and perfect X

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Q : Why haven't the Kiwis been to the moon?

A : Not enough scaffold hey bro

  • @buskerbuoy oh the aussies have been to the moon hey bro

  • @sherazuki You got me there

  • Neil,

You are a talent that I have always admired.

We are both growing older but, while i still draw breath, I will listen.

    Cheers cobber,

    TheUTE!

  • Idon't like the way he sings,in fact I don't like anything they sing..but the sexist female voices are kiwi and irish

  • Neil Finn doesn't get enough credit as a song writer, lyricist, and artist. Those of us who know and love him are truly blessed.

  • Chooice !!!

  • Neil is a New Zealander, from Te Awamutu in the North Island.

    Nice version.

  • top effort love to listen too.

  • Neil is a true hero

  • Neil Finn is so incredibly talented

  • great Version

any Aussie singer can sing a Aussie song for me any day

  • @Msizzyblue

I'm pretty sure he's from New Zealand, could be wrong!

  • who cares great song still

  • Yes he is.

  • haha he is a kiwi.

he just spent alot of time in australia

  • @Msizzyblue He is a Kiwi not an aussie. Why do you guys constantly think he is?

  • Have always loved this song - this seems like quite a sad version by NF?

Still love the version with Jules Shear best I think.

  • first heard this when Toni Collette sings it in "cosi". have been in love with it (and her, by the way) ever since.

love the h+c version, but i think this is my favorite. just awesome.

  • ref:gazomaz.u say average singer songwriter.neil has wrote and sung some timeless classics.if u ever went to c neil ,crowded house, finn bros,at a gig u might agree with me and a few other million.

  • its nice, not te best, but nice. His"Falling at your feet" acoustic is an absolute wonder.

  • Compared to who?

  • awesome. Love it one of the greatest bands ever. i love this version but (yes u can hate) i like Marks better. Not trying to be a dick this is awesome this bloke can sing :)

  • Thank christ for Neil etc, u can hear the pacific feel of this version, word, great song by H+C, good bands both side of the tasman oh and the area...and not just cause they're from here, world class and enlightening.

  • Im from Peru, I like the word of this song..lindo

  • Says something that someone like Neil with his amazing songwriting talent does a cover of this song. Hunters and collectors never really got the credit due. Looks like Neil likes Aussie guitars too (if that is a Maton he's playing)

  • Love Neil! I agree, he could sing the phonebook and make it sound amazing....

  • You took the words right out of my mouth!

  • neil is neil.best in the buisness as far as i am concerned

  • neil could sing the phonebook and make it sound amazing

  • brilliant cmmt. and completely true.

  • @tubestation66

best comment about Neil Finn ever!

  • @tubestation66 and this is better than the phone book :)

  • @tubestation66 Too bloody right!

  • @tubestation66 You know, that's the BEST descripiton ever!!!

  • @tubestation66 I couldn't agree more

  • No-one sings it like Neil

  • @MsSez but Mark Seymour fronting Hunters and Collectors or as the true believers know them, Hunnas, sings it best. As a fellow Australian, I genuinely hope you had the opportunity to have seen a live performance by the Hunnas. If you have, then your life has been well lived as mine has.

  • this is my fave None written By Neil track I adore it with a passion, I love Neil and Crowded house so much Neil is such a beautiful songwriter and the words he incoprates into song are such honey I will NEVER not love this man he rocks my whole musical being he is amazing...

  • Yeah but it's a Hunters and Collectors song. :)

  • we know like my previous comment says fave Non ch song :)

  • Listened this song again, i only can say : this is really straight to the heart!

  • Sorry about this ugly comment, but Neil/Finn are for me a world star...Ok NOT a little bit commercial, but the different styles really did/does straight to the heart and many bands from there has given to me are incredible pure life.....Since 1980 I love this band (as several other bands of course) with is brother : it keeps me in mind forever

*** And in fact as growing older, Split Enz**** Old man, who I am LOL no not at all*

  • sacred? that's a bit over the top. if mark seymour had issues with people covering this tune, he wouldn't be showing up to play it live with them. neil finn has given this song an extra 20 years of life that it wouldn't have had without him

this is a great version, how much emotion should a guy with an acoustic guitar playing for a corporate mag display? all the songs in his catalog and he chose to honor seymour with this.

nothing in rock n roll is sacred!

  • Agreed. Besides, Mark himself has played alongside Crowded House many times and is good friends with Neil. He should be, considering his bro is Crowded House's bassist. I agree as well, without the constant covers of this song it would probably have been forgotten about when H+C disbanded.

  • The thing is comapring Finn and Seymour's voices is like comparing wind with fire. Seymour is raw and powerful, while Finn's voice is subtle and gentle.

  • Why don't you say the same thing about James Blunt's atrocious cover of fall at your feet, or Sixpence none the richer's raping of don't dream it's over?

  • I love it! His voice is subtle and beautiful. I reckon his expression is just him concentrating.

  • A beautiful performance, the Finn Bros are as talented as they are modest. I prefer Neil's vocals to those of H&C, enjoyed this.

  • on ya Neil, at least you got more of the words right than eddie vedder...

  • i love this version

  • Go Neil

  • It's interesting to compare Finn's version of this song to Seymours; Seymour's voice is rugged and powerful, and sends shivers down your spine with his passion. While on the polar opposite, Finn's voice is very smooth and subtle, and his voice captivates you with it's light and shade, something you won't easily forget.

  • @SpencerIves definately agree with you, but i loved hearing this version, good to hear this song in a more subtle way

  • @SpencerIves Hi, no disrespect to you, your comment, or the great Mark Seymour, but if you just type in " neil finn better be home soon live " (or just click on the link for it over there --->). Watch that, and tell me if you don't get get a shiver down your spine. I just about cried, and I'm ten foot tall and bulletproof...

  • Last night we saw Eddie Vedder and Neil's son Liam sing this together, Awesome!

  • Neil Finn is wonderful here although some of my favorite lines are missing.

  • This is from me to my mates who lost everything including their lives on black saturday R.I.P.

  • What was black saturday?

  • The name put to the day Victoria was ravaged by bushfires. Worst fires to hit Australia..and we get them every year!

Sympathy to those who lost everything..

  • I love this so much, i agree tho Doug Anthony Allstars do a fantastic version. I even bought their comedy album once just to hear this lol.

Just made a lovely singer/songwriter discovery, Phoebe Peek who is a british girl of just 12/13!! Loving her songs, specially Stay That Way

  • Mark Seymour sings this song with great passion. Neil looks bored compared to him.

  • That's why i noticed, he actually looks kind of sad, doesn't he? But bored or not, you can't deny that he does nearly as good of a job as H+C would on this sing :D

  • daas do my favourite version of this - it's on youtube

  • I forget how incredible Neil is live, most beautiful voice in the world!!

  • pearl jam - best version!!!!!!

  • Yeah the boys from Crowdies often played this song at their live gigs

  • i loved the original, but Neil has such a magical touch to his voice - ah makes me cry! Beautiful.

  • Dedicated to Tina

  • shuttup fools, this sick as... best ever

  • jbinjjk09 , Neil is actually being quite true to the original lyrics of this song. H&C released no fewer than 4 different versions of this song- later versions only had the two verses, I guess pandering to a more commercial audience. (I still have the 1986 single on 7" and a live H&C concert record from 1984 with slightly different lyrics again) Thus endeth the history lesson for today : )

  • Thanks for that, never knew that there were four different versions!

  • amazing voice <3

  • Amazing singer but......nahhh cant beat Mark Seymore

  • class

  • Totally agree with some of you...Sorry Neil, but you just don't seem to have the PASSION required for this...

  • ppppffffffffff

  • i so agree! he doesnt have the same powerful passionate voice like mark. mark's voice is so intense that u feel u could drown in its heat, but this guy sings it too coolly

  • It's a little silly to compare fire and wind, I think. Neil Finn has the charm of a summer breeze about him.

  • I love you Neil. You're massive. x

  • I think he is deliberately holding back out of respect. Obviously nobody does it better than Seymour. Finn is an amazing performer, but he is not letting it fly here.

  • Whatever Neil touches, turns to gold in my opinion.

  • You wont get any argument out of me on that note.

  • the original lyrics was way better. why mess with something that works. if it aint broken, dont fix it.

  • Because music is all about interpretation. Not repetition.

  • i'm a big fan of this guy... but yeh...

why mess? unless he was not so well-rehearsed or something... :/

    nice, anyways

  • Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

    Great rendition.

  • What year was this?

  • I can very much relate to this song at moment

  • Kiwi or Aussie this song breaks a curry muncher's heart.

  • max respect to neil and him singing his own songs, but gimme mark seymour for this one any day. softcocked the vocals here, with not enough emotion to tell it. seen buskers do this better. keepin this real. come on neil you can do way better than that. it does sound though as if he had a throat problem that day. truth spoken.

  • kiwi

     NEW ZEALANDER

  • this is amzng i love it

im a proud kiwi never ever forget it

  • a proud what? so what. does that mean something to this song?

  • each to their own, but for me just hasnt got the emotion there.

  • neil finn is great and this is a brilliant song but def a poor performance here

  • what? you are so wrong, this is amazing!!

  • What's the definition of Neil finn? New Zealand's best songwriter ever in history. so talented he is definetly one of my main idols in music

  • blossum - i will make u laugh and make you cry - this is true.. i will watch u in your sleep, so i will. and i will never say goodbye - we will always be "bffbf" no matter. and we may never meet again... well who knows. xxbfgfxx .

  • What a classic version I heard him singing it with crowded house on mtv unplugged in 95, great voice... Great song.

  • love this song <3

  • only heard of hunters and collector a few days ago when a friend in Aus told me about this song - what an absolute classic - i am going through the various versions and this is a good one - love accoustic variation of good songs - strips them down and reveals if they are good songs afer all !!!

  • poor buggers got a cold......but he still performs & still sounds better than most!

  • Poor boy, should have been settled down on the sofa with a rug and a hot lemon drink, not out performing.

  • hes a bloody Kiwi, thats what they sound like

  • listening to neil is like being mugged by an angel

  • wow - best comment EVER!! <3

  • check out Jon Nickoll's "Goodbye Sanity" for music of this ilk!

  • Thanks for posting this. I've heard many renditions by H&C and Crowded House. This is another good one that I haven't seen before.

  • The credit must go to Mark Seymour for writing it... his voice is beautiful, and him singing it with Eddie Vedder is sublime, but Neil Finn is lovely too... just the best song, no matter who sings it!

  • Mark Seymour and Eddie Vedder! Have I been living in a cave! Why isn't this commen knowledge!!

  • Yeah yeah ...this guy was 10 times better than that guy rah rah rah....

  • was this supposed to make me cry

    doz it did =]

    just...extrordinary lyrics

  • neil is the man!

  • Apparently versions exist where it's 165,000 places instead of 4 :P

Beautiful song, the version he did with the band at Farewell to the World was brief but brilliant. Lovely to hear him do it so beautifully and honestly. This is such an enduring song, I've heard Paul McDermott do a great version with the Doug Anthony All Stars. It's truly a classic

  • Gosh, didn't know this song was apparently about Mark Seymour and a hooker? Seems a bit odd.

Crowded House have been playing this song since they started touring back in the mid 80s. Figured they played it because of the Seymour brother connection.

Another song I saw Crowded House play at Festival Hall Brissie back in 1987 was Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". To see and hear Neil Finn do this classic song justice was simply amazing. There is a screaming rock god in him too! Miss u guys!

  • I love you Neil.

  • i recon eddie vedder's is the best

  • your ears are second rate if you think that

  • we saw Neil at Liverpool a couple of weeks ago he was awesome [as always] and sang this beautiful song
