I saw Sam in one of his last Las Vegas appearances. You could tell something was very, very wrong. He was rambling and, at times. mumbling. He even shouted profanities to some in the audience who got up and exited. It was awkward and embarassing. When Sam was good he was very good. Now, he appeared to be running on fumes. Maybe, literally.

Yes, Dave. He had Kinison on his show for the first time in 1985. Kinison was virtually unknown at that time. Letterman, on the other hand, had the number one show in that time slot, and won 5 Emmys for that show. Letterman also introduced many other stand-up comedians to a national audience, such as bill hicks, david johansenn, chris elliot, and many, many others. During the WGA strike, he paid his employees out of his own pocket. His show was the only WGA approved late night show.
