The reason why this scene still strikes me as one of the most thrilling and moving scenes I have ever seen in a film (even after 30 years) is not at all the politics of the October Revolution, but the fact that one has the sense of the excitement of actually being a participant in a major historical event, even as one's own life path and one's own close relationships are being transformed. @loufalce a very similar scene was in Zhivago.... after reading Anthony Sutton I think he is saying reporter John Reed was a rabble rouser NOT a reporter.....curious. it shows a historic time that was great for about five minutes. women's rights and freedoms then it got really evil with stalin. Beatty is from Arlington and loves the study of government and the US. so this is a deep movie.
@TheRhythmCollection You would be wrong. The eventual end of socialism is communism, and yes, communism is a stateless society. That said, with historical context in mind, socialism would last a very long time. Bolsheviks advocated for the dictatorship of the proletariat, a revolution that was LEAD by LEADERS. Other parties advocate different programs for the socialist transition. As far as Stalin/Trotsky, im sick of that debate, and i'd rather focus on something that actually still matters.

Over half a million on the second largest demo in British history. A response to cuts in wages, jobs, pensions, care homes for the elderly, education, grants, youth clubs, hospitals ... In the end it's about right and wrong. But that's mostly left and right. I'm reestablishing a Marxist group in my town. Appreciating both the success and the reasons for the collapse of the first workers state will help us put these robbing Tory b******ds in the Museum .. where they belong.

in our society, communism is unworkable. However, should do something about the issue of social justice. We need a revolution that would eliminate any real privilege, and discrimination, need a different system that combines the economic freedom of all with justice and equal.
The cccp was just another nazi fascist regime with slightly different ideology. Communism and nazism are just two branches of a common trunk, that is,fascism. WW2 without cccp would have been better. It was General Tibbets and the great scientists at the Manhattan Project that enabled victory against fascism. Communists just replaced one fascism with another.
Comunism=ideology of expoliting the working class and monopolising the means of production to a few high ranking party members. Capitalism=liberation of the working class and means of production belongs to working class. Communism=North Korea, Kim Jong Il.
@xxwzaebd you got that all wrong I understand that modern so called communist states say they let the worker have their freedom but really oppress and exploit them like the dictators we have today but if your talking about REAL communism the worker has their freedom they have the means of production, maybe you think the means of production is who makes the stuff but really the means of production is who OWNS the stuff like a factory in a capitalist society the Boss is the owner not the worker
In capitalism, factories do not belong to the bosses who are just paid managers. Factories belong to institutional investors on which the working classes have invested huge sums.
@Wolfen443 guess what it was a reality, Beatty shows the first five minutes of a great experiment in government, they killed royals then set up their thing, then it got evil and lots of regular people died under a man named Stalin. it failed, but yeah the music was good and Beatty's film spared no expense. learn some history.
Game over for capitalism and his crimes,,,i'm not stalinist but capitalism killed more people than nazism and stalinism....it's up to you it's time for real socialism not for stalinism but for revolution against capitalism!
@Drstrangefeeling he is not depicted in any of these scenes and that was not even his real name, read anthony sutton and learn some history, great as a movie however.
@darthnarodnik Trotsky's views were not in line with those of the Bolsheviks. Stalin was more of a Bolshevik, his problem was that power got to his head, just like any leader in a Communist country, hence its downfall, the human factor.
What's a few million deaths in the scheme of a revolution, aye? Communists make the Nazis seem like nice people in comparison when you look at the body count.
The people of the USSR and China died because the economy was very poor managed. Many soviet workers died during the collectivisation of 1929-1932. It is true that Stalin murderd many people, but he never killed them for their race or skin colour.
Hitler wanted to kill all none German/Arian races. He hated the Jews, Communists, Liberals and all those who opposed him. Those 6 million Jews were killed largely between 1943 and 1945. 12 million soviet citizens were murdered between 1941 and 1945.
@darthnarodnik i'd like to emphasize something Bro. how about the European navigators who plundered, raped & enslaved tribes whenever they go. How about the racist policies that America had even before Hitler thinked of White Power. So in short, Red or White, there is a shit factor.
@darthnarodnik why m i stupid? what i'm sayin is that whatever form of government, ideology, there are some flaws. Think again before you comment, stupididiot...
@darthnarodnik What about the many millions killed by Stalin, Mao and other Communists, it sounds as if you're an apologist for them, too.....ALL social systems and religions have been corrupted, we need to find, if possible, a way to live in freedom and peace...how we get there is, and has been a problem for thousands of years. Greed is probably the biggest obstacle, though.....let's exchange ideas, not insults nor gunfire, friends
@johnross12 "Communists make the Nazis seem like nice people in comparison"
Considering that Nazism saved German capitalism, & that capitalism never admits its own crimes, it's a fair bet capitalism is responsible for far more deaths than any socialist society. And if socialism is such an inherently horrible system, why has the US spent ~$5 trillion over the past century on attempts to undermine every socialist system that's ever come into existence? I know the answer.
@johnross12 "Communists make the Nazis seem like nice people in comparison"
Considering that Hitler sent communists to the death camps along with Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals (all done, by the way, with a routing system devised by IBM -- that's what the wrist tatoos were about!) -- my guess is you think Hitler has the right idea about many things.
Get a grip. It shows your ignorance to assume I am an evangelical. I'm a Greek Catholic, and your friends suppressed my church and murdered 10s of thousands of my co-religionists.
If anyone is ignorant, it's you. Mussolini started out as a member of the Italian Socialist Party, but left when he realized nationalism was a better way to sell his movement. In any case, Bolshevism and Nazism are two sides of the same coin.
The Nazis and fascists were socialists who rejected internationalism for nationalism. Mussolini for one started out in the Italian Socialist Party. The rhetoric employed by the Nazis and Bolsheviks was similar with the exception of the scapegoats. For the Nazis it was the Jews and for the Communists it was Christianity.
@johnross12 fucking ignorant. this is what they teach you in evangelical conservative schools? people who want to actually comment on this vid about the film SHOULD WATCH IT FIRST. If anything this film is anti-communist and anti-bolshevik. It has a much more leftist point of view.
This was actually a leftist anti-communist movie. Plenty of people on the left - social democrats, anarchists, left socialists etc - opposed the bolsheviks and believed their brand of socialism would lead the reform movement to ruin. In hindsight it looks as though they were right.
@Anekantavad that is one great movie, but deep. Warren is from arlington and loves all things politics. I need to watch scenes again on you tube. I am not sure if it is pro or anti but I think historically accurate....he is saying John Reed was NOT a reporter...but a rabble rouser.....I recall it was a very long film.
@Montyleeny14 "We should organise another revolution."
It's in the works. Find a socialist/communist group near you and work on it. Send me a PM, I can help. This time it will be for real. For it to last, the revolution has to come about -- as Marx envisioned -- in the advanced, developed industrialized nations. That is why the Soviet Union and China have fallen back into capitalist modes of production: their respective revolutions occurred in countries with an undeveloped economy.
@DevoutSkeptic yes actor playing him. also Beatty implys that John Reed was NOT a reporter but a rabble rouser, I came to the site to watch scenes again, I am bright and thought I studied this in college (Marx could not feed his own children for example) and Beatty paints a picture and his points are a bit lost, must see it again.
The real communists were the Socialist Revolutionaries.
They sent Fanny Kaplan to kill Lenin.
Lenin survived, got rid of the Social Revolutonaires, and the world was subsequently treated to nearly a century of Russian Naziism, also known as Bolshevism.
This is a great movie and the Internationale is a very stirring song! I just listened to another version done by an Irish folk singer that was amazing!
In recent times i had seen a disappointing trend - many people, who were Hayekians or American ultranationalists had claimed that Nazis were actually socialist, since for some reasons they analyze morality by economic policies and placed Nazis in the same light as the socialists, leftists, trotskites, Leninists etc. I mean, that is the most absurd notion - politically they are mortal enemies, complete opposites of each other. Anyone who disagrees with this could fuck off.
@TheVoiceOfReason93 That's curious. If I remember right World War II started as an agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to divide up Poland between the two of them. Keep your enemies closer? And many people would argue that people who's ideologies are similar are more likely to fight each other, like two brothers fighting each other or many Civil Wars. Maybe TheVoiceOf Reason should give some rationale why this is the case instead of telling dissidents to "fuck off."
Lenin was smart, Stalin was too much of a brute, he purged the party of intellectuals, and that's why the experiment failed, communism will only come when we all get assimilated by the borg, haha
@lmartyanov "only in hollywood you can hear the internationale and at the same time watch this guy descend into diane kiaton's vagina. still a great movie though."
it's about this guy, john reed and his girlfriend, louise bryant before, during and after the russian revolution
he's famous because he was a journalist who covered the october revolution and wrote a book about it, he was smart enough to realize that the february revolution was just the start and that something big was coming after that
this is not a film adaptation of the book, it's a film about the author of the book, and as suggested by this movie, he had a pretty interesting life
@shanmugamlakshmanan No need to spread the "news". Everybody knows that communism is the bloodiest, most oppressive, most despotic ideology that only brought death, ecological and economic disasters where it reigned. No need to spread the "news" about communism. Planned economy is the epitome of idiocy. What is good about communism?? What problem did communism effectively solve in history?? Name me only ONE country where communism did not end up in a rotten shithole?
@joaquinveyron when you pertain to Communism, it is not limited in a single country or achieved and practiced in a single state, but an international economic, political system based on solidarity of workers from different countries. It was socialism that was practiced in countries like Cuba, China, former Soviet Union and the like. In case you do not know what's the difference between Communism and Socialism is, read and study more. An empty can makes more noise than a filled one.
Dipshit, doesnt matter whethere it is limited to a single country or not. If it is not limited, to a single country, even worse. The more people had to live under communism/socialism, the worse. It was nightmare and a complete disaster from the beginning to the end. 120 million dead. Get your facts straight, you fucking dipshit and get in touch with reality, fool.
@joaquinveyron you are so wrong and you sound like a fascist. Why did you even view this clip?
' Everybody knows that communism is the bloodiest, most oppressive, most despotic ideology that only brought death, ecological and economic disasters where it reigned.' sounds more like capatilism!
it's called The Internationale, it's calling out to workers all over the world to get together and stand up to their oppressors
i think if there was ever a 'world anthem', this would be it, but it's most commonly described as the international anthem of socialism
i love this song, it fills me with a sense of nationalistic fervour, then i realize that it's not just limited to a single country or ideology, it's an international thing, that's why i like it so much
Dressden, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the begining of a confrontation with Russia. Tha unofficial declaration of the Cold War. Military talking, they had nothing to do with WWII. I don't think we should feel proud about that part of history.
No matter what I think of Communism, Reds is a fantastic film, and modern epic makers (cough cough James Cameron) could learn a lot from everything in it, especially the story line and the way it is shot. I also suggest that everyone reads "Ten Days That Shook The World" the book Reds is based on, by John Reed. But make sure you read a version from before 1923, as that's about when the owners of the book rights, The British Communist Party started manipulating it.
Oh, wow, WallyCurtain, never knew that. But still, can any other ONE American, besides perhaps you and some others, admit that USSR contributed more in Europe and significantly in the East than the US and western Allies had?
Oh and I forgot to mention that the US was largely responsible for feeding the Russian people during WWII. I once heard a Soviet veteran say, "There was this wonderful American meat that came in cans." The Hormel Corporation saves the Russian proletariat, while there own government's agricultural and military shortcomings was hanging them out to dry.
@WallyCurtain Yeah right. American imperialism was one of the capitalist countries responsible of the masacre in the "civil war" where 21 foreign armies invaded soviet russia. Stalinism was a minor helper of american imperialism. Its very diferent the stalinist era than the soviet era.
An inspiring and moving moment from one of my favourite films. The ideas expressed in the song have been around a very long time , and always will be, as long as one man is exploited by another. The Soviet Union failed for many reasons, but the events portrayed in the film show that we can win and learn from the experience of the first attempt of common people to rule and govern themselves.
Next time the people will get it right. The world had to learn something from that desastrous transition from Lenin to Stalin and beyond. And yes despite the exagerated fears of Conservatives in the U.S., Comrade Obama is not going to turn the White House Red. He is more of a Center-Left Populist than a true Far Left politician. By the time the elections come in 2012 the Far Left will support the far more Leftist Social Democrat Hillary against a Conservative ticket featuring Palin maybe.
@anarksee, that is an interesting thing to say, then why he is using the Far Left Progresive Liberals for his Domestic Agend while pandering to the far Right and Conservatives in foreign policy. He is trying too hard to fix all the problems at once, while appealing and pissing off everyone at the same time. I personally see him as a Chavez type populist, but a more politically savy Right-Center-Liberal Left than that wanna be Socialist nut of Chavez.
Further on from the point below, DON'T give me the Crap that America singlehandedly won the Pacific War alone - does anyone know, that shortly after Hiroshima got nuked, USSR invaded Japanese Manchuria as promised earlier, leading to a crushing defeat for the Japanese forces, and that it was this shock and the Nagasaki bombing three days later that ultimately convinced the Japanese to surrender?
America won the war - my rear! (no offense meant to the US veterans who fought the Pacific War)
It is generally regarded that the Soviet Union would have had no hope of beating the Nazis without the Allies strategic bombing campaign. HAVENT YOU EVER READ JOHN KEEGAN!!!!!! Otherwise I would agree with you, the Russian Front of WWII was by far the most important front of the war. The USSR was an evil, but just the lesser of the two during WWII.
On that fact below, i would like to ask every Proud American a question: How do you have the audacity to condemn USSR as the evil empire, when countless more Russian men, women and children had been sacrificed than the Allies, so that such greater genocidal evil as Hitler could be destroyed? How noble is America, knowing that it was Russia who gave more so that justice could win, and yet claim the greater credit?
To all those anti-commies: Remember it was the USSR who stormed Berlin and crushed Nazism at its heart, nearly every Western media produced since then had completely ignored the valiant Russians' contribution in the war - "The Americans won the war" they would brag. had they forgotten that the Western Allies lost like, less than 2 million deaths, while Russia had suffered 28 million or so? And that only THEY REACHED BERLIN while the others are way off?!?
I'm just sick and tired of those people who hold simplistic view of the Cold War as an "Us" Vs "Them" game, compared to the horrible and complex realities of nuclear war and all the checks and balances. I'm sick and tired of those who blast an ideology when they don't even understand it properly! I mean how many of you guys even READ the Communist Manifesto and Das Capitale?!
Those guys hate USSR so much, when they didn't actually realize WHY the Russians became what they were! Could you say communists were evil when the Tsars and aristocrats and upper class in Tsarist Russia were just as bad? Could you say that communists were evil when USSR sacrificed innumerable numbers of people to save the world from the Nazis?!
To understand WHY Russian communism failed and appeared oppressive, we have to understand three factors:
1 - Years of oppression under Tsarist rule before 1917 had made them believed anyone opposing communism as completely evil
2 - History of invasions by Napoleon and Hitler had made them insanely hostile to west and maintain huge armies, which reduces consumer goods and cripple economy
3 - capitalists manipulate world opinion to save their own asses.
Exciting scene. A pity that Marxism-Leninism is simply the replacement of one opressive, statist system with an even more oppressive, statist system. There was no dictatorship of the proletariat, only a dictatorship OVER the proletariat.
Still, this is no cause for resignation and disillusionment. The effort to create a fairer, freer world must go on, despite what happened in the countries that hung the label "communist" on themselves.
@mpgingdl John Reed is there NOT as a reporter as I was taught but a rabble rouser. Beatty shows the five minutes that it was great then it went to hell and stalin, sad history.
Communism was shockingly brutal, they had to bring a huge medieval country into the 20th century overnight and tens of millions of people died in the process. They also suffered horribly in WWII, even more tens of millions of people died. Despite that, they gave us Sputnik and the greatest film directors and classical composers of the past century. I don't like the ideological nature nature of their system, but we didn't give them a fair fight. They might have won, and good for them.
Yes, but we should remember that communism should grow out from an industries country, highly developed. And not from peasant feudal societets. The factorys ect should all ready be there and not as you said let an peasant poor population build an modern society, no wonder why meny died in does early years.
I understand your point, modern "social democracy" in Europe is the most successful system ever, maybe the best that can be possibly achieved under current circumstances. I meant to be objective and sympathetic towards the circumstances and achievements of the USSR, as against the fundamentalist crazies in the US, where I am. Are you in Europe? I ask because, if so, you are coming from a very different (and better) perspective.
My father was a victim of McCarthy, if you know US history.
Yes I am european, and I know EU and US have very different perspective. I was in the US last year for 1 month, and when I spoke about EU and how we have it, most of them look at me as if I was an communist.
But meny of them still admitted that EU has an better system, when I said to them how the system look like, I could see on their faces that they still are scard of it, but they like the achievements but not the system??
I think it is the effect of long years off propaganda against socialism
As a leftist from Sweden, we think EU is a neoliberal union(state), very much like USA, which is really bad. I hope we can leave it soon :/ I wonder what the US citizens would think of us swedes then if they call EU communist xD
americans on average are too stupid to understand socialsim or any poitical concept they are braindead, if you tell them some other country has a better system that canadians live longer or there is less crime they say the statistics were made up by comunists seriously i'm begining to think this is the stupidest nation on earth these tea baggers
its sad but the EU is nice in that it is like the soviet union use dto be a counter weight to USA hegenomy
Don't be so pessimistic, Comrade. We Americans prize individualism, which can have a downside at times as well as being a positive attribute at other times. And we've been brainwashed, which is something to be overcome. When we go red we'll be the best damned reds that ever were. We tend to do things in a big way. :)
HAHA I'm watching this right now, one of my favorite movies ever and I haven't seen it in 25 years! What's shocking me is that it's so beautifully made, for example the sheer quality of the photography is up there with abstract art films like "Koyaanisqatsi". I saw this, I think, SEVEN times in the theater when I was in my teens, I loved every minute of it.
@odnom99 Tell that to the millions that died in communist gulags. Communism is a worst form of tyranny even if the corporatism and usury of the status quo social order is baneful.
Your hypocrisy would be amusing if it wasn't so disgusting. Tell the 24,000 children who die every day from hunger and preventable diseases about your capitalist freedom. They die because of the imperialism that built up global capitalism and the IMF's extortion racket. You know nothing of what you speak.
It's good that in Venezuela and Nepal right now people that think like you are being run out of town on a rail by radical union workers and students.

in our society, communism is unworkable. However, should do something about the issue of social justice. We need a revolution that would eliminate any real privilege, and discrimination, need a different system that combines the economic freedom of all with justice and equal.
TheYuyube 10 months ago
The cccp was just another nazi fascist regime with slightly different ideology. Communism and nazism are just two branches of a common trunk, that is,fascism. WW2 without cccp would have been better. It was General Tibbets and the great scientists at the Manhattan Project that enabled victory against fascism. Communists just replaced one fascism with another.
xxwzaebd 10 months ago
Comunism=ideology of expoliting the working class and monopolising the means of production to a few high ranking party members. Capitalism=liberation of the working class and means of production belongs to working class. Communism=North Korea, Kim Jong Il.
xxwzaebd 10 months ago
@xxwzaebd you got that all wrong I understand that modern so called communist states say they let the worker have their freedom but really oppress and exploit them like the dictators we have today but if your talking about REAL communism the worker has their freedom they have the means of production, maybe you think the means of production is who makes the stuff but really the means of production is who OWNS the stuff like a factory in a capitalist society the Boss is the owner not the worker
phan169 10 months ago
In capitalism, factories do not belong to the bosses who are just paid managers. Factories belong to institutional investors on which the working classes have invested huge sums.

What about the Ukrainians? Stalin deliberately murdered them in the 1932-1933 famine because of who they were..
Stalin hated anyone who opposed his ideology or who were seen as counterrevolutionaries. He was every bit as bad as Hitler, if not worse.
I guess you enjoy rationalizing Stalin's crimes.

What's a few million deaths in the scheme of a revolution, aye? Communists make the Nazis seem like nice people in comparison when you look at the body count.
johnross12 1 year ago
The people of the USSR and China died because the economy was very poor managed. Many soviet workers died during the collectivisation of 1929-1932. It is true that Stalin murderd many people, but he never killed them for their race or skin colour.
Hitler wanted to kill all none German/Arian races. He hated the Jews, Communists, Liberals and all those who opposed him. Those 6 million Jews were killed largely between 1943 and 1945. 12 million soviet citizens were murdered between 1941 and 1945.

The Nazis and fascists were socialists who rejected internationalism for nationalism. Mussolini for one started out in the Italian Socialist Party.

TheVoiceOfReason93 1 year ago 11
@TheVoiceOfReason93 That's curious. If I remember right World War II started as an agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to divide up Poland between the two of them. Keep your enemies closer? And many people would argue that people who's ideologies are similar are more likely to fight each other, like two brothers fighting each other or many Civil Wars. Maybe TheVoiceOf Reason should give some rationale why this is the case instead of telling dissidents to "fuck off."

Don't blame them - they didn't ask for it.
