Most under-rated band EVER EVER EVER. And Annie ... what pipes. I made sure my son knew who this band was and he was taken with their creativity and talent from the get go. They perfected the art of merging classical and rock. The perfected art rock.
Wow, what a performance. Annie looks like she's about to, um, 'fall out' of that dress! But what fantastic singing, as usual. I miss the orchestration a little bit, but it's pretty impractical to bring an orchestra on tour, I guess!
I heard this song the first time on Halloween night while driving past "The Amithville Horror" house in Amityville NY. What a perfect tune, words excluded to listen to something so spooky, while driving past a spooky place.
Saw Renaissance four times in the 70's and early 80's I look a bit like Annie and she blinked and smiled when she looked at me. I am sorry I never got to see more of them

I have been a Renaissance fan since the middle 70's. I saw them in 1977 at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada. Annie's unique style of singing has been nothing but great range & perfect pitch. I saw them again in 2010, at the Mod Club in Toronto, Canada. Her voice is still outstanding. A great performance; I loved it all, especially Mother Russia, Running Hard & Ashes are Burning. Steve Hackett followed her. He & his band were superb; a fantastic night of entertainment.
I went to a concert in the mid '70's. It was supposed to be Renaissance, Angel and Camel. Camel wasn't there, but I didn't feel cheated. My cousin came with us and was able to score a cool single seat ticket at the box office. Annie was dressed in a light blue chiffon full length dress. She was also back lit. Over 30 years ago, but I still remember it.
Had a chance to see them in the 70,s at Pitttsburgh civic arena with Al Dimeola. Opted to see Stanley Clarke with his band across town at the Stanlel theater. Didn't Al come across town to jam with his old friend after he was done. Drove Stanleys guitar player off the stage. It was awesome. I'll never forget it.

Great post. There's got to be so much of this stuff out there in cyberland.
Saw them in Phoenix Az with full strings. opening for Yes in 197...? I think it was 76. Going For The One tour. It was awesome. But it was an arena show. It would really have been nice to see them at a small venue.
I love Annie's voice. But she really shone with Ren. Her solo work lacked any good material. No dis. Just IMO.
I saw them in Akron, Oh in '77. Mr Big opened (good band but bad placement), then Gentle giant, Renaissance headlining. Their plane was late, but they made up for the wait. My God, did it make up for it..
@LEHIGHDRIVE Oh WOW! The Tower! Haven't heard mention of it in such a long time. I lived in Delaware 28 years (Indianapolis now). I saw Renaissance and Procol Harum the same night back in the early 90's at.......yup..........The Tower! I saw soooooooo many good shows in Philly from 1970 to the mid 90's (when I moved away)...The Tower, the Spectrum....f_ _ _ing awesome times!!!!!
@technocrash09 Yep, The Good Old days...Saw many a band there. First being GENESIS w/ Peter gabriel in 1974. Later GENESIS w/o Peter. Peter doing Solo tours 3 or 4 times. shook his hand. kept all my ticket stubs. They are on Face book albums...Good Times...good Times
Renaissance last night in NYC at Concert Hall - magnificent. It simply isn't possible for Annie to deliver anything less than a virtuoso performance. Her range, her effortless delivery, her haunting voice - I never tire of hearing her.
I was there too (2nd row in front of Annie!). Could you believe they way she held that final note of this song? I really believe Annie sounds better now than on this clip. An incredible performance and a dream come true to see them again.
Glad to hear about that...I hope they will make a DVD out of it. In the meantime, anybody from the audience managed to get any video clips? Please do share. I will never be able to make the journey from thousands of miles away to see her! :(
Saw them many times at college in Manchester and Lancaster in the 70's. Brilliant, Brilliant. Where is Jon Camp? Brilliant and totally original front base lines .
For a few years in the mid-70s, the owned the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. And if you've been there, you'd understand the incongruity of that. Nevertheless, wonderful stuff.
Got to see them at the Meriwether Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD, 1979. Fell in love w/Annie, such a voice!
Hey wintermoon 1939, where the hell was Ripley's? WIOQ was one of my favorite stations back then. Loved Ed Sciaky's Sunday night program .... Sunday night progressive show, mid eighties. RIP Ed Sciaky.
Annie now lives in an area not far from my home and I had the pleasure of seeing her and a few of her former Renaissance band-mates perform in a local high school auditorium (a nice one, with good acoustics) - it was incredible to see them in this small venue - almost like a private concert. An unforgettable experience!
One of those bands I could never figure out Why they didn't make it bigger, anyway I always loved them...Having Annie out front with that dreamy voice didn't hurt...
I remember seeing them at Philadelphia Academy of Music. I think the show was temporarily stopped due to Annie getting a splinter in her foot...the risk when not wearing shoes. LOL
I was there that night in the first couple rows, Thanksgiving night I believe. Ripley's was a small place, just a a bar really, couldn't have held more than a hundred or so people.
I got to go backstage after and meet them, tried to get a kiss from Annie, I remember she only let me kiss her cheek
She's about 5 foot tall, had to bend way down. Jon Camp's a short guy too.
This show was broadcast live on WIOQ radio during the Ed Sciaky days...
They sound like the Pretenders? I don't get it, but you do. Anyhow,,,,, "THEY" don't sound like the Pretenders, you should have said the Pretenders sounds like Renaissance and not the other way around. After all, Renaissance was playing decades before Pretenders were even a band
Is that really Annie? Where's the floor - length flowing gown? I didn't know she actually had legs.
Anyway... thanks for throwing this on the tube... been a long time since I've heard this... and the tempo on this sounds about the same as it does on the albums I still have.
I saw Renaissance in the mid 70's at The Place in Dover New Jersey and got to meet Annie after the show. They were awesome and thank God for youtube. They are just as awesome without being stoned. I spent many years wondering what happened to them and why they never hit it real big. They were the best. Seeing them was an incredible event that you had to be there for. I will always love their music.
Always love this band saw them live in Bloomsburg Pa in 74,Didn't see her feet though,it's still amaseing how much a studio can do for a band, the bridge in this song where they build and the piano works give me chills, all in all the studio version has more impact than this tour they did, thanks ICEMan

It's funny - of those poeple who have heard Renaissance, they either love them or hate them. I've yet to meet anyone who does hate them. This music is complex, and not for the ADD crowd.
This song in particular strikes an emotional chord with me. Powerful.
I saw Renaissance in the old calderon hall in Hempstead NY in the late 70's. Annie was great,I love the dress she is wearing in this video, nice and short, great legs. Annie always goes barefoot.
They also executed millions of their own people. And still further millions of "liberated" peoples. This song is inspired by Solzhenitzyn and is bit of a biting criticsm.
I had the wonderful experience of meeting Annie Haslam last year. I worked a veterinarian's office in Lansdale, PA, and she brought her puppy "Daisy" in. SHe was super nice, and personable, too She even returned on a day her puppy did not have an appointment to bring me an autographed photo.. What a super nice LADY !!!!
I met her too when I was 14. I used to actually pray that I would meet her. And then I did. And she complimented my singing at this fan club party when I was 18.
With the recent death of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and the even more recent troubles in Georgia with Russia, this song could not keep itself out of my head. So glad they have this live version of Renaissance's great song on the tubes.
Had the pleasure of seeing Reainassance at Red Rocks many years ago. It was a magical experiance. I also saw them as they went through line up changes in the 80's when Annie went from the long dress to the short fairy dress. Excellent then also but the Red Rocks experience was the best. Love you Annie!
Annie wearing a Mini-Dress! Didnt see that at any of the concerts i was at back in the 70`s! Great band , great people. I met them quite a few times back then and was lucky enough to be invited to Abbey Road studios to see them recording "Ocean Gypsy". Great experience, terrific times!
They got exposure, but were not appreciated by the mainstream crowd. I think Midas Man made it to mainstream. I missed them so much when they disbanded. They are classical rock but no other progressive band compared to them. They were creative/unique, extraordinary... their music is emotional, intimate. They had disbanded only because they had reached an end to what they could do musically ~ to continue would have been repetition.

Back then, I did my best to get them more exposure, calling up DJ's all over NY & NJ to make requests, giving radio stations free tickets for callers to win on the air, even giving a radio station a collection of Renaissance albums to play. Because of the length of their songs, plus the fact they were not appreciated by some, it was rough sailing. To meet the members of the band, and their appreciation of my efforts was a great reward, especially when my wife freaked out over the phone bills! :)
