I have to differ with you about Lutgens.he was not a "political hack nazi stooge"fanatic as he was portrayed in the movie. In fact he had no use for Hitler. If you have seen the film clip of Hitler inspecting the ship, all the sailors on deck give him the Nazi salute.Lutgens gives him the standard military salute. He could have left Germany at the begining of the war and went to Switzerland where he sent his family, but he stayed because he loved the navy and he loved Germany.
He did`nt rise to the rank of admiral by being an "idiot".Both he and the Bismarck were vicxtims of circumstances beyond his control. He was trying to make it to France for repairs but with a crippled ship that could`nt make much speed nor speed he had no choice but to fight when they caught up to them.

According to the crew members that survived, Bismarck`s main guns were out of commission, but her secondary ones were still functionable. But they were useless because the Brits were out of their range. They could have surrendered the ship but it had technology they did`nt want the Brits to know about. So they scuttled it.Evidence in the hull supports this. The majority of the seamen froze to death in the sea because the Brits were afraid to stay and risk sub attack.Only 100 Germans survived.

The Bismarck was an awsome battleship and ahead of any ship built in that time. As everyone knows, the British were no match against the Germans and their technology, thats why they needed the total combined forces of everything they had to sink one battleship.

NO, it was fatal that the otherwise honest Sir Winston C. turned 2x against Germany.

CAHOON14...are you some kind of moron. Well you are. King George V and Rodney destroyed the Bismarck beyond recognition, so much in fact the ceased firing and sent to the Devonshire to topredo her. You sound like some kind of german sympathiser? Hope your grandparents are pround. CRAP POST CRAP COMMENTERY. PEOPLE FOR FACTS ON THE BISMARCK WATCH THE DOGFIGHTS SERIES ON HERE. THIS IS AMATUER AND HE BORROWED FOOTAGE FROM A PC GAME LOL. FOOL.
"The Bismarck was capable of sinking any ship it faced" - quote. Yes, it was, but it would actually have been very fortunate to survive a 1:1 encounter with a King George V battleship.
Why? The KGV ships had many years of experience behind them. They had excellent armour which protected ALL their vitals and guns and fire control easily capable of disabling any opponent.
The Bismarck had too many systems above the armour, hence the ease with which it was reduced to a hulk in its final battle.
Bismarck would have inflicted considerably more damage had it not been for the Fleet Air Arm. The endeavour of the brave Swordfish pilots in extremely poor weather and the fortunate disabling of her rudder by one of their torpedoes ultimately lead to her demise. She was destroyed by the RN.
i think its time to look at this the easy way the bismarck was sunk? yes. the bismarck was left with all major guns out of action and a useless hulk? yes she is in a few hundred feet of water well call me a fool but i would say that means she lost and was sunk? or am i reading this all wrong
The video evidence of the wreck shows Bismark did not scuttle herself, she was sunk, Hood was found to be halfway through a turn to give her a full broadside but did not have time to complete the move, but at the end of the day 2500 men died, never good or "kick ass"
But that's entirely irrelevant. Even if they did that, they appear to have failed because Bismark was still floating fine, upside down, when the brits put the final torpedos into her and she sank.
But as I said that's irrelevant. RN destroyed Bismark. When you destroy a ship it seems to usually finally sink. Exactly why is irrelevant.
The RN had reduced the Bismarck to a floating wreck. She couldn't fight anymore. She couldn't escape. If the ship was scuttled it was a direct consequence of this damage. Whether the killing blow was a result of RN torpedoes or her own crew scuttling her is, ultimately, irrelevant. The ship was finished long before she sank.
Well Technically the bismarck suffered no water line damage. Only 2 shells made it through the armor ont he side of the ship, 1 11 inch and the other 16 inch. Torpedoes no a single one made it past the bulk head which protected the ship from any serious Torpedo damage, despite evidence of several hits from torpedoes along the length of the ship, not one broke the armor bulk behind the torpedo bulkhead. Over all the only part of the ship that was damage or destroyed was the super structure.
how you know that? you been down and looked here over for a few weeks to work it out? well seams strange if all them 16 and 14 inch shells did no damage whay did it stop fireing and sink? or was all that smoke a BBQ for the men on board and realy she went back to port for a touch up? nooooooooooo it sank get real havent you worked it out it lost it got sunk stop trying to say it won lol its at the bottom
Last under water exploration of the bismarck showed all the torpedo hits didn't make it past the designed torpedo bulge, meaning the torpedos didn't sink it. It also proved all the shells that hit the Bismarck just destroyed it's super structure, not because the Bismarck was far better, but because the British commander was an idiot and went for point blank range shots meaning shells would skip across the water and not hit below the water line even if they were 15" shells or not.
@Luminahawke You type absolute Shite, read the statements made by men of the KM that worked in the boiler rooms, read see the video footage taken of the Bismark 2000, 600 shell holes, 3 torpedo s punctured below waterline and 1 Torpedo damage to main deck
@ChrisisBass13 They sank themselves to save themselves from the torment of British guns which were hammering the upper deck and super structure of the ship setting it a flame from stem to stern.
The original name of the Bismarck was Deutchland. Hitler had it changed to Bismarck because the ship' name translated to Germany. If the ship was ever sunk. The pride of the country and its name would go down. apparently he made a wise decision on this one.
that´s stupid! There was a german Pocket battleship "Deutschland", build at the late 20ies. This ship was renamed "Lützow" in spring of 1940, to disguise the sale of not finished heavy cruiser "Lützow" to the soviets AND to prevent a ship named "Deutschland" could sunk by enemies.
I am sorry, why does it matter if she was sunk by the British of Germans. She was dead, she would have been sunk one way or another, or even maybe towed by the Brits and captured. If she was scuttled it simply quickened the inevitable. Its not like the brits were out of ammo. Hell they had a flight of swordfish flying during the battle, could of used them to make an unopposed run on the Bismark. It was dead, doesnt matter who did it, it was gonna happen.
The jury is still out and likely will never be in on whether Bismarck finally sank because of scuttling or torpedoing by the Royal navy. The fact if KGV and Rodney totally smashed an already wounded Bismarck. She was obviously already in a poor watertight condition before the finally foundering as all reports pointed out that she was *very low in the water* before the sinking. So it could be the torpedoes or the scuttling charge that caused her to turn over finally. But does it matter which?
for a start, hood and prinz eugen were heavy cruisers. obviously none of you have read dr ballard's book on the bismark. The idea that she was scuttled is not one that can be discredited or proved, i believe norfolk and suffolk both launched torpedoes towards the end. the british did NOT leave the area before she sank as british ships started to pick up survivors, but left due to U-boat sightings in the area, hope this clears up a few things
benash04a - Actually HMS Hood was designated a Battle Cruiser, which meant that it was as large (41,000 tons) and as heavily armored (15" main guns)as a battleship.
Actually HMS Hood was designated a Battle Cruiser by the RN due to her rated speed. The only British Battleship to have a greater displacement than Hood was HMS Vanguard which was launched after WW2.
you are confusing the bismark with her sistership the Tirpitz here, she was destroyed by Lancasters carrying the "Grand Slam" bomb, not the bismarck. she capsized and eventually sunk in a norwegian fijord a year or so after the bismarck was sunk
lol ive just read ballards books on the titanic and the bismarck like 4 times, both books include more than one eyewitness account of the happenings, from survivors. an excellent read :D i knew she had to be sunk, but she has to have been one of the most beautiful ships there has been in the last 100 years, absolutely stunning. just found that the grand slam wasnt 1000lbs, or even 1000lbs, one grand slam bomb weighed 22,000lbs! jesus, must of been a hell of an explosion hehe
sorry but your wrong, she was heavily damaged and yes all the guns but one were disabled and the germans scuttled her,get some facts before you start making uneducated comments you stupid fool
nice video except for the part where u say british ships could not finish destroying the bismarck... r u joking? king george V completely annihilated the bismarck on bombardment and and it was finally sunk by 3 torpedoes from Dorsetshire, from less than 2 miles away. Cool video, but lets not take the merit from the british navy
It´s not true, the documentary from James Cameron, showed that bismarck had a special armor for torpedoes. It couldn´t sink by torpedoes. See the documentary. All the british battleships hadn´t fuel and armor to continue firing, they had to stop to go back home to take more ...
After the British Battleships had finished with the Hood she was a floating hulk, totally wrecked. The point that she was still afloat is moot, she was afloat, but effectively destroyedm
Denmark Straigh, was a shot engagement, HMS Hood had an inherent weekness, she had wooden decks. In only the fourth or fifth salvo from the Bismarck, HMS Hood received a shell which found one of her magazines, she blew up and took all but three of her crew with her.

@ChrisisBass13 They sank themselves to save themselves from the torment of British guns which were hammering the upper deck and super structure of the ship setting it a flame from stem to stern.
Luminahawke 7 months ago
the great modern german tactic in w1 w2 sink your own ship farmore advanced than the royal navys dated idea of sinking that of your enemy lol.

The original name of the Bismarck was Deutchland. Hitler had it changed to Bismarck because the ship' name translated to Germany. If the ship was ever sunk. The pride of the country and its name would go down. apparently he made a wise decision on this one.
lja364 4 years ago
that´s stupid! There was a german Pocket battleship "Deutschland", build at the late 20ies. This ship was renamed "Lützow" in spring of 1940, to disguise the sale of not finished heavy cruiser "Lützow" to the soviets AND to prevent a ship named "Deutschland" could sunk by enemies.
adlerhessen 4 years ago
The bismarck was not the original name of this ship.

Mcplkelly 4 years ago
she was scuttled.
svaran 4 years ago
The jury is still out and likely will never be in on whether Bismarck finally sank because of scuttling or torpedoing by the Royal navy. The fact if KGV and Rodney totally smashed an already wounded Bismarck. She was obviously already in a poor watertight condition before the finally foundering as all reports pointed out that she was *very low in the water* before the sinking. So it could be the torpedoes or the scuttling charge that caused her to turn over finally. But does it matter which?

the hood was blown up!!!!!!the shell from bismark hit his ammo

The bismarck was sunk by germans this is right look the flilm "der untergang der bismarck"
SebastianBrach 4 years ago
for a start, hood and prinz eugen were heavy cruisers. obviously none of you have read dr ballard's book on the bismark. The idea that she was scuttled is not one that can be discredited or proved, i believe norfolk and suffolk both launched torpedoes towards the end. the british did NOT leave the area before she sank as british ships started to pick up survivors, but left due to U-boat sightings in the area, hope this clears up a few things

benash04a - Actually HMS Hood was designated a Battle Cruiser, which meant that it was as large (41,000 tons) and as heavily armored (15" main guns)as a battleship.
stonethrower88 4 years ago
thanks for putting me right, :)
benash04a 4 years ago
Actually HMS Hood was designated a Battle Cruiser by the RN due to her rated speed. The only British Battleship to have a greater displacement than Hood was HMS Vanguard which was launched after WW2.
GazC 4 years ago
That's partially right. Hood was not as heavily armoured especially on the deck armour as battleships, and as a result could attain a higher speed.
The problem was, lighter armour and the placement of the armour made it vulnerable to incoming shells, which, as it turned out was it's undoing.
stonethrower88 4 years ago
Specifically, Hood was vulnerable to plunging shells.

the sinking of Bismarck in the simulator is really impresing,it's in James Cameron's documentary about bismarck!!!
EmperorDragosh 4 years ago
1.its guns werent disabled, thts wat happened to scharnhorst, another major battleship form germany.
2. bismarck was not scuttled, she was destroyed by a nuber of 1000 pound bombs dropped by lancasters, along with many other raids
jeebateeba56 4 years ago
you are confusing the bismark with her sistership the Tirpitz here, she was destroyed by Lancasters carrying the "Grand Slam" bomb, not the bismarck. she capsized and eventually sunk in a norwegian fijord a year or so after the bismarck was sunk
benash04a 4 years ago
seeing as its all flowing back to me now i realizw you are correct. but i bet u just looked it up :p lol
jeebateeba56 4 years ago
lol ive just read ballards books on the titanic and the bismarck like 4 times, both books include more than one eyewitness account of the happenings, from survivors. an excellent read :D i knew she had to be sunk, but she has to have been one of the most beautiful ships there has been in the last 100 years, absolutely stunning. just found that the grand slam wasnt 1000lbs, or even 1000lbs, one grand slam bomb weighed 22,000lbs! jesus, must of been a hell of an explosion hehe
benash04a 4 years ago
sorry but your wrong, she was heavily damaged and yes all the guns but one were disabled and the germans scuttled her,get some facts before you start making uneducated comments you stupid fool
dewsman 4 years ago
the bismarck wasnt sunk by the british.
mArC9134 4 years ago
nice video except for the part where u say british ships could not finish destroying the bismarck... r u joking? king george V completely annihilated the bismarck on bombardment and and it was finally sunk by 3 torpedoes from Dorsetshire, from less than 2 miles away. Cool video, but lets not take the merit from the british navy
palfcadia 4 years ago
It´s not true, the documentary from James Cameron, showed that bismarck had a special armor for torpedoes. It couldn´t sink by torpedoes. See the documentary. All the british battleships hadn´t fuel and armor to continue firing, they had to stop to go back home to take more ...
andrelptube 4 years ago
After the British Battleships had finished with the Hood she was a floating hulk, totally wrecked. The point that she was still afloat is moot, she was afloat, but effectively destroyedm
GazC 4 years ago
er you mean The Bismarck right?
GrandMasterYodda 4 years ago
Oops ,yeas I meant Bismark. I must've been tired last night. Hence the use of "m" instead of "." at the end of the comment!
GazC 4 years ago
Denmark Straigh, was a shot engagement, HMS Hood had an inherent weekness, she had wooden decks. In only the fourth or fifth salvo from the Bismarck, HMS Hood received a shell which found one of her magazines, she blew up and took all but three of her crew with her.
