My Dad was the drummer for "Two Guns-Balls Out" a band signed in 1979 by Capricorn Records with the Allman Brothers. Check out their music on youtube if you love classic southern rock n roll!
I love the sound of this, it makes me thankful for those I have. There is nothing better than a song that reminds you of how beautiful each person in your life is. Sweet Melissa reminds me of my daughter because she is such a free spirit, and it reminds me of just how precious our children are. I know it sounds goofy but it takes me there.
actually greg was sitting in a graveyard and saw a tomb for a girl named melissa and wrote this song. check out skydog, the duane allman bio. you might be right though, but that's the story behind this song.
I read somewhere that the song had been written, no title yet, and one day Gregg heard a mom calling after her daughter named Melissa in a supermarket and decided to use that name as the title.
This song still sends goose bumps up and down my spine everytime I hear it, and I was a young man when this was released. Today I'm in my sixties and it still sounds great. I'll never tire of hearing this song.
Lol I always thought being named after this song was original, until I discovered youtube..haha feels great to know how many people love our song though <3
This is a song for guys that have spent time on the road and have encountered a few women along the way, but not to good result due to a preoccupation with some one from the past that will always hold him in deep check. The shit part about this is one's inability to put this person behind and get on with it because she will always be there in the back of one's mind to make one recall the sweetness of the time spent with her with. The sad part is learning that she settled for some clown.
@newmorning59 You hit it the proverbial nail, friend. I've also always considered this a railroader's song, being one who feels passionately and nostalgically constantly, which makes for very, very long trips literally and psychologically.
@newmorning59 It is true that this song is about someone who can't live totally in the present due to their heart being somewhere else. But Melissa is the name of the guitar. Music can be a terrible and wonderful lover.
There was a little girl named Melissa who was killed after a long night of horrible mistreatment by her daddy or stepdaddy, can't remember which. There were weeks of horrible details on the news, and this song was playing often on the radio. Now 40 years later, I still think of that little girl when I hear this song. I wonder if anybody else from Nashville does too. Poor sweet baby deserved better. . . .

Crossroads will you ever let him go
Or will you hide the dead man's ghost
Lord, or will he lie beneath the plain. Or will his spirit fall away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa
Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa
