It's amazing that while in Europe there were great artists like Picasso, Dali and Bacon working - Americans were lauding this rubbish. In two words: Colonial Garbage. America is like Canada and Australia - They have never really produced a genuinely great artist.
Well, but isn't it counter-intuitive to enjoy starkness, at least by conventional sensibilities? There must be some psychological condition that wants for starkness, to enjoy this.
I'm about to go to the Met in NYC to see a collection of his works in grey; also of note is the MOMA's showing of Lucian Freud's etchings and related paintings.
Very bad artist.

Wikipedia says "In 1958, gallery owner Leo Castelli discovered Johns while visiting Robert Rauschenberg's studio." Johns was born in 1930.
