That was not the reason, here in the States we shift with our right hand not our left. I've driven manual transmissions for 17 years now, I went to the UK last year and it was very strange shifting with my left arm and took a whole week to get used to.

yes and no... i am american... we only drive automatics if there is no need to have a car stick... for instance... we are not going to get a porsche automatic.... there are some dumbass that do and i want to slap them... but we just don't feel the need to get a manual if there is no reason to have one... and i am sure lionel richie knows how to drive stick... it just he is not used to shift with his left hand
Sticks are beneficial for racing but on public roads automatics are more coveiniant, especially when making corners. I had a '75 Beetle that I loved but got rid of mostly to get an automatic (old VWs have VERY stiff steering), I traded it for an '84 Mustang and I'm quite satisfied now.
