The individual footage from any of the clips looks very interesting. However how it can possibly be enjoyed by the viewer when it is sliced and diced into tiny bits and pieces is beyond me. Why not show more of the individual footage? At one point fuji is leaping out of the water, What happens next? There is spindrift blasting over the water in another, but it has little relevance as each bit is such a fleeting glimpse. Yes, I have done my share of rough offshore sailing. Footage 10/10 Clip 3/10
Something really interesting (to sailors at least) happens at 1:22. Spray comes over the front, and a the effect of the wind 'round the foresail becomes evident as the spray is pushed into a tunnel on the leeward side of the sail. Fascinating Way to View the air 'round the sails!
love the pictures, but If I was on one of these boats the vomit would be all over the place (but washed clean in a second) and was having wet dreams of being on land again. Hat off for these guys.
@SydneyTrafic , I think it's called l'hydroplaner, Parlier's attempt at something different for the orma 60 rule, lightning fast at times but sadly not often enough.
That's a little too rough for me. I don't mind rough seas but when the waves are five six meters, You have to have enough money in the bank to buy a new boat after you wreck.
I'm trying to find this song so I can put it on my Ipod. Can U help me with the song title. I can't find anything for Alania on itunes or anywhere else. please help
my dad was sailing on a mono in a race, he was on a reaching stretch and it got really shallow, like 10ft of water, and they were heeled over just enough so that they didn't run aground. their keel is really thin, so they would have lost their keel if they had hit.
catamaran and trimarans totally scare me... i cant imagine rolling over with these would be catastrophic on the opensea... my dream would be to buy one trimarans, but ithink ill stick with a monohull so rollover is not so dramatic on opensea ... :)
I had a catamaran Roll on me when i was 9 Y/O my dad's friend had one an took us out . next thing I know we where flying on one side of the boat. there was a bouy that was in his blind spot.
we hit it , an the bouy went under the water an shot up just enough to push us to the point of no return an over I got wrapped in the lines with my feet but my dad an his friend where fine an my head was able to get out of the water just enough to tell them i was stuck, NE way's I still enjoy them
it will when i install my own wings that stick out the sides like a tri(mine will fold down when i want them out) which will lift my keel out of the water and then i will do at leat 40 knots, dont nobody steal my idea lol
Monos and tris can be pushed harder before they actually flip. Cats are faster, but when sailed to the limit they require a crew on deck. Most ocean races are for monos only (e.g. Volvo Race) or are sailed by shorthanded crews or even singlehanders. Then a tri makes more sense. Big record breakers are often cats, like Enza going for the Jues Verne trophy. Enza beat the shit out of a tri competitor that year.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWEEEESOOOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE... YEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.. i cross the 90mil between cuba and florida by windsurf.. i know what the adrenaline's feels like.. that is why i become a adicted.. !long life to eXtreme wather-sports!
kinda but it's only because multi-hulled ships tend to be racing boats. a racing yacht is obviously going to be mroe fragile than a cruising yacht because they're made to go fast, not durable. all those fins, foils, canting keels, water ballast, thin carbon fiber parts are just accident wating to happen.
yeah..i live on my ISLAND PACKET 31 1983's and is an eXtreme strong sail boat, and the pleasure that provide me is a deferent one from the exxxxxxxxxxtreme conditions that i get from an about to come or an already passing huracan while windsurfing on up to 45mil/h winds,a 75L board and a 3.5 sail... is like having god it self wispering in my ear
It's a catamaran without much of a "deck" so the masts are on the hulls. This makes for good visabiliy, and the use of two mainsails. Hobie used to make a trimaran/hydrofoil with this set up, it was called a tri-foiler. There are some vids of them on YT. I forget who the designer of this type of set up was, I think it says on the tri-foiler vid.
You need total faith in your boat, and yourself. With satellite communications you get enormous help. But sometimes you have to have that bit extra in yourself. Ellen shows the occasional HORRORS of being out there in the Southern oceans.
mwjscn; Hobie made the tri-foiler which is a smaller version as "Longshot", they are trimarans with hydrofoils. This one looks to be a catamaran with no foils, but, the sail configuration is the same, possibly the same designer; I know he left Hobie to pursue other projects. (more useless info rattling around in my head)
makes me wishing i had ...scales :)

Ocean racing is the ultimate test. When sailing in these conditions, you can't pull over and stop if things get rough or something breaks.
