  • I'm a fan of Manilow but I hate his version of this song, everytime I come to on a CD I press 'next' song. I much prefer this version with the different lyrics - which is closest to the original? I think Karen excels singing this personally.

  • is that Bonham on drums?

  • This version is not the best Barry Manilows version is much butter, better lyrics, better arrangements, very good singers but the carpenters should have done it like Barry

  • @dontmesswithadrew Disagree. :-( Love the Manilow, but the Richard Carpenter orchestration, finished -years- later, is AMAZING.

  • No, No...this is Barry's song!

  • @123Rockchild While it was a big hit for him, I wonder what would have happened if the Carpenter's version had been released at the same time.

  • @catman916

Well, it might have become a hit for the Carpenters. But when the Barry's version would come along and hit the airwaves, I think Barry's hit would have blown the Carpenters out of the water. This Carpenter's version is too sleepy.

  • @123Rockchild I absolutely agree with you. Too sleepy and too sad. Barry's version is simply superb.

  • @whydoesmypussysmell Keep listening to the Karen version. I thought so too at first, but upon repeated listening, the Richard Carpenter orchestration is AMAZING and you really look forward to when all the instrumentation kicks in at song's end. :-)

  • You can hear she flipped the page of lyric at 1.51

  • Hidden Carpenters good song.

  • Karen Carpenter, without a doubt, has the most beautiful recording voice EVER. No one can compare to her. No one! It is such a shame that her recording years were cut so short. You will always be remembered Karen!!!

  • page turn at start of 2nd verse section adds to melodrama cool

  • one of her best recordings go karen

  • I love this song..thanks

  • Manilow is agood singer BUT NOBODY can compare to Karen!! Just the best voice ever!!!

  • This is just brilliant. I remember nabbing a copy of the "Interpretations" CD, as well as the VHS collection, as soon as it was released, just to get a listen of this song. There will never be another KC.

  • @howzitgoin1970 It is a wonderful recording particularly since the vocal was never intended to be released. Karen's expression of emotion is unsurpassed.

  • @catman916 Beautifully said.

  • Karen's voice was a s smooth as glass.

  • I'm a MAJOR Karen fan, and I believe she had the most beautiful angelic voice since earth was created. But she didn't beat Barry Manillow on this song, in my opinion. Still, Karen could sing a Cherrio's commercial song and I'd listen spellbound.

  • I wish someone could splice this and manilows together as a kind of 'both sides of the story" thing....

  • Absolutely beautiful: Karen, her amazing voice, her soul and this song. Love her!

  • This version is just too melancholic. With a title like "Trying to get the feeling again", the song should be uplifting. I prefer Manilow's version hands down.

  • @jamessmedley82

Barry's take was great, but this hidden gem by Karen made the HORIZON album, arguably Carpenters' greatest album. And melancholia was Karen's assets-- this is SUBLIME.

  • @jamessmedley82 Why should it be uplifting if she's not "getting the feeling"?

  • @auerstadt06 Well, yes, you DO have a point !

  • Karen was a fox!

  • @greg4161 I agree. Besides being an incredible singer and drummer, she was quite attractive.

  • the build up at 1`23 is fabulous

  • Yayyy! ! You did good!

  • This is a good version, although I prefer Barry Manilow's version. It's funny though, I prefer the Carpenters' "Ticket To Ride" over the Beatles'. I prefer Anne Murray cover of her hit song (what was the name of that?) over the Carpenters.

  • @koalasarah

"I Just Fall in Love Again."

  • i love their version of this song! <3

  • Seems that Karen and Richard got the tune "before" Manilow did...

    ...also...it's on "The Essential Collection"

  • Yes, and there are some differences in the lyrics between the 2 versions.

  • @sunnysoundblackpool:

"Tryin'..." is also on "Interpretations" [first release of song and album in 1994], "Gold" and I am sure others.

She had a delicious voice that can't be matched in today's music---bar none! ;)

  • Yes, I mentioned this in the information section.

  • Yes, and I added my comment. Love Carpenters' music! Have been a fan since the 1970's.

Thanks for your comment. Have a nice day.

  • She was, indeed, one of a kind.

  • @richfincm i second that. it's like a smooth, rich, decadent dessert

  • :-D <3<3<3 Karen

  • A SUPERB recording. Showing off Karen and Richard Carpenter's talents, in the best ways possible. Karen did ONE take of this vocal. Listen at approximately 1: 51 and you can hear her turn her music sheet over! They were working on a lot of things, and this was forgotten. Thank you Richard for finishing this song so beautifully! It should have been a NUMBER ONE hit. Barry Manilow had the hit, just as he did with "Can't Smile Without You".

  • I agree and do not think that it could have been done any better by anyone.

  • I also noticed the sound of the lyric sheet being turned over! I like Karen & Richard's treatment of the song very much.

  • @ChrisOtheBigC ...page turning @ 1:51 as mentioned in the cd booklet .......

  • you missed it, its also on the carpenters ultimite collection, i should know cos ive got the albumn wen it came out in 2007, plus great song , and best singer ever karen carpenter 4 ever luv uuuuuuuuuuuuu
