  • is it hard to get a degree to make games?BEST CAREER EVER!!!

  • hmm i'm from Canada.. wonder if going to another country is asking 2 much even though its like only couple hours a day. but flight is.. pricey

  • Me: So Boss, I'm going to be coming into work late tomorrow, is that alright ?

Boss: Oh sure, don't worry about it !

OKAY, I'm going to be a game designer..

  • @vincentpol ummmmmm you basically described every type of design job ever created.... theirs hundreds of jobs were you have to start at the "bottom" and work to the top, its not only this job...... you have to start somewhere its called hard work!... its reality with any profession out their, though the job is different the heart you put into it is no different than the next nurse, doctor, hairstylist , fashion designer, lawyer who puts heart into their work

  • You know i always had a dream of going into this profession and finally im going to go for it :)

  • Nice. I play a lot of WoW and it really inspires me to become a video game designer. For those of you who want to do level making / map designing, warcraft 3 world editor is a good start.

  • Who else noticed her TF2 shirt

  • This is my all time dream as a child to work with games to play a game and to tell someone that i helped in making that game become a reality it would bring a tear to my eye knowing my long time dream coming true. If anyone has any tips or good schools that would help it would be really great

  • i have a dream to become a game developer, how to get there?

  • @williamkazio yeah i really wanna become a game developer when i grow up. all my friends say that its a lousy goal because it seems boring and they say its unlikely ill get there. its really fricking annoying.

  • @williamkazio Learn IT.

  • @williamkazio read lots of math and c++ books.

  • @williamkazio I'd assume you start by looking for the jobs under Game Development. Eg: Level Designer, Graphics Designer, Narrators, Programming. Than researching on each subject you come across.

Don't be afraid to try something new, and be prepared to expand your mind and learn. :)

    Good luck! :D

  • 1:16, WC3 RoC FTW. TFT is good also but RoC has more original games on it such as Nexus Arena, me n my friend love that game.

  • i need to get my mom one of those t shirts

  • I think I would rather program something thats used and executed by all people that use a computer not just play video games....I am moar into the whole making a difference in the way people do computing...however, I would LUV to work on World of Starcraft :)

  • She knows the guy who helped design Morrowind in the 2nd degree.

    ...

    *stalk*

  • @MarckMabimods I know several people who worked on Skyrim too. The great thing about the game industry is that it is super small. So chances are, you are going to run into and talk to people who worked on games you geek out over.

  • what programming software do you use to create these games?

  • @packsfan36 thats what I want to know too

  • @packsfan36 The ones in the video was an in-house editor written by our programmers. There are tons of editors out there though, and many of them get released with the games. Skyrim has the Creation Set, Portal has Source, Quake has Radient, Starcraft 2 has an editor, Unreal Ed is free to download.

  • Game Designer? Ummm I think you mean Level Designer?

  • @TheNetau It depends on the company. Even there, while I do mostly level design, a good half of my job on the project was game design.

  • @TheNetau CALM YOUR NOSE DOWN

  • Reality check

    1. The # of games you like is FAR less than the # of games out there, this means when you become a developer, you will most likely NOT be working on a franchise you like.

    2. Crunches. That's when a game company crams months worth of work into 3 weeks, to get the game to the distributor on time. This means 80 hour work weeks.

    3. You won't actually be designing gameplay, thats reserved for specialists who have decades of experience ahead of you.

My advice? Stick to the indy sector.

  • @saeklin im a volunteer beta tester for a fps on facebook and i have observed number 2 a few times and been part of them too (though not in the same way that the people at the office are). from what ive seen crunches involve clearing out the areas shops of red bull and sleeping at the office for 2 hours then waking up to keep working at it. seems brutal but its still something id like to do perhaps

  • @saeklin All of this is spot on for the most part.

    1. I have worked on 4 games, and I only really liked one of them. Only that one was a game I would have played.

    2. It depends on the company. At a now closed studio we had a 3 month deathmarch (7 day work weeks, 12 hours a day, for 3 months.) However at my current job, we haven't crunched a single day, despite having shipped a game during that time. It's all about the producers.

  • @saeklin

    3. Again, depends on your skills and the company. My first job in the industry was at a company so small, they had everyone designing gameplay. Also decades is a bit of a "misnomer" in that most people in the industry don't have decades of experience. The average burnout is 8 years. At 5 years/5 shipped titles you are generally considered a senior designer.

  • i wanna become a game programmer but i need to go to university

i wanna work for square enix :)

  • @DaTSiKxGaming

omg i hope u get in. id love to work for square enix!

  • How much dose she get paid ??? in UK Money ?

  • @AzzDaa1

    about £2 a week

  • @SupernaturalGifts777

    LOOOOOOOOOOL !! Whattt ??

  • Do you need some sort of degree to make fps games like battlefield 3?

  • @CODuploadsnow you don't NEED any qualifications to get started although a University Degree on C++ will goa LOOOOOOONG way towards getting a job in the games industry

  • @TotalJargon C++ is the BEST way to get into the industry. My degree, even from the Guildhall, it still took me 8 months to find a job. In our class, every programmer, regardless of skill level was hired BEFORE graduation.

  • i want to be a game programmer win i grow up, ow wait im working on one right know :D.

    im only 14 though :\

  • i WANNA BE A GAME DESIGNER. BUT I DONT KNOW LANGUAGES. IM ONLY 11

  • @emehmet34 start learning NOW then! u dont have to be 18 to learn things ya know

  • Morrowind is one of my favorite games ever!

  • thumbs up for tf2 t-shirt :D

  • I wish I was old enough to become a game designer

  • @benkillkim50 ur never to young to do anything

  • Nice tf2 shirt XD

  • i wants to be i game designer maybe

  • i wanna be a game maker when i get older :P

  • I'll join the ranks of you soon.... about 5 years

  • god i want this life!!!!

  • This is nice. Now I know what a video developer does.

  • She must be $75,000 or more in debt. Some people are even $120,000 in debt. People finish paying it in their thirties or older. This is one of the problems that I have in becoming a video game designer.I don't want to be in debt. I heard that companies are now hiring people that have the passion or creativity or both to get hired and not the college that the person graduated from.

  • Entry level for programming starts around 40k - 60k.

    Yea.

  • @TomRomeneesha It is true, the college doesn't matter. Neither does your degree, unless you want to be a programmer. BUT you do have to have an *awesome* portfolio. The Guildhall helped me make that.

If I didn't have the skills, my degree wouldn't matter and I would never have gotten hired. I do have alot of debt, but I am paying it off fast and I wouldn't change a thing.

  • If i'm bad at math, but i passed my game design class in HS, will i have a chance?

  • @NerdyAndJerkish Dude, I have Dyscalculia (a mental disability towards mathematics) and I can do everything a games designer can. Honestly, the role of math in games design is pretty small. What area are you wanting to go into?

  • @NerdyAndJerkish I bet you could still get a job in the video game industry.

You might not like or be good at programming, but you could do scripting, writing (maybe study English), or art for video games.

I wouldn't bet on getting a job JUST coming up with vague ideas for games, but send me a message if you want more info.

  • @NerdyAndJerkish Not likely. I use math every single day. Not just simple math either, but geometry, algebra and such. If you passed your game design class but failed math, your game design class failed you.

Half of game design is doing the math. Loot curves, exp curves, damage balancing, etc.

  • 3:20 +

    Awesome!!! :D

  • i put this for my career path in school

  • im so going to be like her soon.... :)

  • ....... my dream ; ^ ;

  • When i was 15 I always wanted to be a video game designer. But since i failed in math.I can't be 1 anymore. I am 23 working as waiter for a minimum wage

  • @Timx4 we all are D:

  • @Timx4 Dude, what area of games design did you want to go into? Technical math isn't necessary for games design. damn, who told you that you can't be one?

  • Cool cool ^.^ two words and done that how I go XD

  • Does her shirt have a heavy and a medic on it from TF2?

  • AMAZINGLY COOL. ALL OF MY FAVORITES! WoW, MORROWIND, ext. :D:D

  • This is not just a job, not because it's so different, but because of the nature of the industry. The industry is extremely competitive and gamers are ruthless in their opinions. You're going to a future boss and apply for a job together with dozens of others who might have 10+ years exp over you. You have to be the best and want to be the best. Then even as the best, you still enter for the low level tasks while you continue to slave away in your spare time, just to slowly crawl up the ladder.

  • what game is this when that man is playing that 3d car game?

  • don't do this job, you can't make a living out of it and have kids and have a good life. srsly, become a doctor or a lawyer it's much better.

  • @miyor123 what do you do for a living? If you're still in college, what do you plan to do?

  • @LANmineTFC lol

  • @miyor123 That's completely false. Some indie game developers of only a few people (or even better example, independant iphone/mobile device developers) spend a few months to a year working on a game/app, and it ends up genereting MILLIONS is sales. Plants vs Zombies, Angry Birds, etc.

  • @JamesKravenwolf Minecraft is a good example as well.

  • @miyor123 what gives you the right to try and divert people from their dream? its sad it didnt work out for you but you dont represent anyone else, i am assuming that you have had many years of experience inside the game design world otherwise you have no credibility anyway.

  • @miyor123 So, that's me in the video. HI! I am pregnant now. My husband makes games too. We not only make a living, we have a *great life* and so does everyone I know who makes games. So... cite your source?

  • hahaha awesome! i want to do this!!

  • Um, is it okay to invest in video game development if I have Bachelor in Films? Because I really love both careers (game and films) and I wonder if they can ever blend in... :\

  • @Freaky99100 Hey, when cutscenes in games are epic, everyone is happy! I'd imagine that is the best way to combine both!

  • @Freaky99100 Creating a game is or can be very similar to creating a movie.

  • @Freaky99100 create cut scenes

  • i feel like these video/computer games are loosing their edge, not because of the quality or content, but simply because there isn't anything games haven't done already: mmos, graphics,fps,minigames...etc. it's just feeling repitative.

  • @fthis1234567 Check out indie games. They're alot more creative than most mainstream developers these days.

  • Hey im 12 years old, i want to be a video game designer or someone who makes a game.... how did you start and can you tell me how i could learn? i'd love a response

    -Jack

  • @iiiSubarudemon1999 Game maker 8. You can join my team of making videogames if you learn enough it's easy enough to learn. I learned it when I was 11.

  • @iiiSubarudemon1999 you should start with something easy as game maker when you get more expiernce you should find a crack for a java program as eclipse

and start actally codering you should what some videos about eclipse and java codering cause its really really hard im 13 and im codering for almost 1 year now i make minecraft mods with eclipse but if youre talented you can make youre own games

  • @MrHAPPYBOMBER eclipse is free dude..

  • @iiiSubarudemon1999 Find an editor and make levels. Make board games. Make indie games. Do this by using tools like game maker, unreal ed, Skyrim's creation kit, Source SDK, etc.

The best way to learn to make games is to make them.

  • very inspiring

  • Team Fortress 2 Shirt Win

  • i think you should be a english teacher your really good at it. thanks for sharing this video

  • So without a bachelor's in english / art etc. this would be pretty hard to accomplish / do ?

  • @Itankndspank Nope. Your degree is not as important as your skills, attitude, and portfolio. You have to show you can do cool things. Build a great portfolio and skill set, and you are golden.

  • "you know why the dark elfs are blue?"

    "no... why?"

"because i wanted them to bed blue"

    *like a boos*

  • im aiming for this:]

  • MORROWIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am already good at modeling, but I want to be better and get a job as a modeler, so what would I have to major in?

  • @GalaxyMods Probably a 3d art program. But you need traditional skills too.

  • Brb going to play Morrowind.

  • @KhaoSBourne but skyrim's out

  • Shouts to all the Game / Web Dev3lopers out there <3

  • MORROWIND!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

  • did i see rainbow dash?

  • Graphics Engine Programmer will be my future job ;)

  • 2010 and they made a Game like this Wooot

  • Coolest female ever :D. Gamer female nerds are super awesome =D.

  • "Because I wanted them to be" XD

  • She could be a cool friend.

  • MORROWIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I NEED THAT SHIRT LOL

    the video game t-shirt

right now I want to change my major to Computer Science and learn to program and make games (and other computer stuff to be more well rounded), cause I play games more than I should and I just realized, I CAN'T GET AWAY FROM THEM. I can't imagine myself doing paperwork the rest of my left. I MUST BE INFRONT OF THE COMP FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!!!

  • Go to DeVry for Game and Programming Simulation. I have a year left but I have $467 hold on my financial aid account to pay off first.

  • She is awesome!

  • "cause i WANTED them to be blue" LIKE A BAUSS

  • COOL! no one disliked the vid. =D

  • i wanted to be a video game disinger now i cant wait till i get to collage

  • @Xxkillax123 Don't wait! When I was in High School I was making Heroes of Might and Magic 3 maps. By the time I was in undergrad I was making Neverwinter Nights mods. Make things now! It's the best way to learn.

  • I'm studying Multimedia, Graphic Design, and digital art. I have courses in 3D modeling, and Animation. i guess I'm set to be a game/new media artist! :D

  • Most video game designers have bachelor's degrees in English, art, computer science, or related areas. In addition, many colleges offer video game specific degrees (such as ITT Tech, DeVry or The Art Institute, and many others). Good luck with your career pursuits!

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia that's not true in france (and everywhere), games are cool: Little big adventure, Alone in the dark, Rayman, another world... Ancel, Raynal or eric chahi were never pro just creative, now it's not easy to do, but you can make a game for the xbox live arcade or for computers and make incredible game with more creativity

no need of paper stating that you can make video games.

i'm sorry if i killed the english language ^^.

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia ITT Tech is Institute.

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia idont know so much about english but the other stuff you are right

  • @chillipepper117 Dude... to be a designer you need to write. And you need to write good. Haha, dude, all video games need writing for stories, quest lines, objectives, whatever. That all requires skilled English.

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia Is there anyway too become a video game designer without going too school? I know this question may seem weird but I have been using computer for about 14 years now and I'm 26 at the moment. I have always been a very big Pc gamer and I was wondering what it would take? I learn fairly quick and I was wondering if I would be able to learn this on my own and succeed?

  • @kMC303 Hey! You don't *need* school. That's just the path I took. It has the greatest chance of success, so I did it.

My advice, get an editor and start making games. Do this by using tools like game maker, unreal ed, Skyrim's creation kit, Source SDK, etc. There is tons of info online, like tutorials and such, learn and editor and make something awesome. You will either love it, or hate all the nit picky work. It's not easy, but if you can do it, it's the best job you'll ever hate. :)

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia Thank you :)

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia must i have good abollity of sketching if i want to be a level designer??

  • @anonymouscitizen0101

Nope. Just enough to get your point across. I am a stick figure drawer, but it works.

  • @ConnectEdCalifornia As an addition to this, be very very careful about the school you pick. The Guildhall was a good choice because every single professor is a game industry veteran. It has a high hire rate. It's good. A friend of mine went to another school and said it was completely and totally worthless. Do your research.

  • @FlameDione just curious but what would flag a good school to a bad one? I'm Living in Canada and going next year. Things like review on the school, experience etc?

    p.s any knowledge in Canada?

  • she is cool ... i liked her

  • I love how my ringtone has been mario since I was 7

  • a TF2 shirt? :D

  • Why do we play video games? Why are they so addictive? Why do they make so much money?

Part of evolution...we can create and simulate worlds for when we go explore space and make all the mistakes beforehand in the virtual world ...we can use them to train and educate and teach skills and coordination and increase learning potential, teach people how 2 use complex equipment / machinery / vehicles via sims, retrain r brains 2 deal with the 'unexpected' & make r brain think on its feet.

  • i will someday be a very famous game programmer, you will all rue the day

  • I am going to be taking a computer animation class and I want to know if that will help me become a game designer

  • good story

  • Razer cooperhead !!! ftw !!! =D

  • Hey ive recently decided i want to be a game designer after thinking all my life i wanted to be an animator. Ive honed my skills in animation and have goten pretty good. But Have recently found a big interest in designing games. Ive got talent in art and animation is it possible for me to become a successful game designer?

  • @ nice ,yea sure but first u have to know whitch subject u have to study at college or univer to become a games designer, i wana become a game designer too but still dont know what is the subject's name if u know plz tell me :p we can make a team :D an artist is perfect for this job :) but ofcourse mostly important is using the computer

  • I've been wanting to be a game designer for a long time :)...sadly idk how schooling would go, and how to find a job in it...

  • @KiTmGoldenGamr I have the same problem. No school in my city. Ill just make history and start the first game company in my city. Good luck to you, hope you find a way, and dont let school stop you. Get some demos of your game online. Its not imposible to make it without schooling if your game is good.

  • Morrowind, is an epic game. if the UI was updated I would spend another 500+ hours on it. :)

  • @paulistheKillZone agreed

  • wonderful video!! make me wanna get into the industry so much more.....but slowly im learnin the difficulties of getting into the industry!!

  • This made me want to become a video game designer.

  • I love her personality!

  • @L0932 I love her Moms personality...how cool is that T-Shirt story!

  • @ogicabp4u I do have the very best mom ever. She supports all my games, and loves sitting down and playing them with me, even now. :)
