  • I have a standred 20 gallon tank could I have one angelfish and some tetras or is that to many fish? (in the summer when school is out I will upgrade to a 30)

  • Yea that should be fine, just make sure to get a baby angel that grows up with the tetras. Some adult angels who have never been kept with tetras will eat the tetras. If they grow up with tetras though they should ignore them.

  • hola , im going to be getting a 30 gallon tank in about 1 week..im going shopping for some substrate and some plants probably tomorrow. one thing is that i want sand and not gravel...ive heard home depot and lowes has some but what kind is best for a freshwater tank? Gracias!!

  • if they have sand for a pool filter that is the best and least reactive. other than that whatever looks to be the cleanest and highest quality. clean whatever you buy in buckets before you add it to the aquarium and add fish. Also if you have a power filter, cover the intakes with foam so sand doesn't break your filter.

  • Toolshed333 is my big brother!

  • Can anybody tell me wether my lighting is good enough for my plants. i have a 20 gallon with a total of about 19 to 20 watts lighting flourecant full hood. i want some low lighting plants like anacharis, java moss, java ferns, anubias, some amazon swords if possible. and i would like to know if they can be planted in pool filter sand or sand. and i would also want to know if i still need to fertilze them.i dont want to use co2 because i cant afford it plese help!thanks.(ANYBODY PLEASE RESPOND)

  • I'd say not enough watts darkspirit14. 1 watt per gallon is a little low. You'd need at least 3-4 watts per gallon depending upon depth of the water. And those should be florescent watts. Incandescent lighting really shouldn't be used if you can avoid it.

  • is $150 (Canadian) a good buy for a 20 gallon starter kit?

  • Well, you could probably do better. Depends what you want. A simple tank, hood, lights, heater, filter, thermometer cobmo should be under 100 in my opinion for a 20 gallon. I buy all my gear separate though, and my tank probably added up to $400 easy.

  • i got a 55 gal and thats how much it cost me everythign seperate

i think ill do the same wiht a 20 gal

  • I would suggest buying everything online to save money. pet stores are very overpriced.

  • but you dont really know if it will work, is tha what you did?

  • Yea. I haven't had a problem yet. I buy from Dr. Foster and Smith. They have a catalog they send me in the mail but i make purchases online. A lot of what they sell isn't available at my pet store. Also they warranty everything on top of manufacturer's warranties.

  • do you now if 83.95 canadian is a good price for one of those 55 gallon metal stands

  • It sounds good to me. $1 canadian is close enough to $1 U.S. right? Stands for that size can go up to $1,000+. If the stand has 4posts make sure it is stable at all corners. I'd recomend getting a stand that possibly touches the floor with a large surface area to disperse the weight. Shouldn't make a huge problem if it has posts, but large surface area helps in stability, and helps prevent floor damage.

  • yes but it will be on carpet and also i think it has bars at the bottom going from leg to leg so it should work ok?

  • It should. Anything designed for fish will be more than strong enough. Just make sure it is level when you install it.

  • a question i had is fish stores are rip offs for gravel right? and i was wondering if i could go to the hardware store and buy gravel? if i washed it good

  • That is a good idea to save money. Sand or gravel is cheap at a hardware store. As long as it doesn't cloud the water, you should be fine.

Should be safe if you give it a good washing 2 or three times.

  • with soap? lol

  • no. soap will hurt fish. aquarium salt is a good and safe disinfectant for fish.

  • what about regular salt?

  • should be fine

  • thanks

  • yur absolubltely right my friend! even sand is cheeper at home depot or lowe's. sand in pet stores are like 15 dollars up for 25 pound bags . but in hardware stores sand are $4.99 for a 50 pound bag. pool flter sand and playsand too!

  • I had a 10 gal. tank and upgraded to a 20 gal. I was very fortunate to find an upright 20 gal. at PetSmart for $89 Canadian. It is the same width and depth of 10 gal. but the height is twice that of a 10. I used everything from the 10; hood, lights, pump, gravel and heater and just got a new filter unit. If you can find an upright tank is can be considerably cheaper.

  • just boguht a 55 gallon starter kit for 300 canadian

  • good luck. keep us updated fishbreeder87.

  • Nice plants. Mine usually die. I just got a new one a couple weeks ago. So far so good. I've had 2 for a year but it they are half the size as when I got them.

  • Good luck! What has worked for me is strong lighting, liquid fertilizers, and keeping the tank as clean as possible.

  • these fish all still with us?

  • yup. alive and well. i'll update later this weekend hopefully

  • dood u gotta fucking help me

  • Just ask a question and I'll be happy to try and answer. If its a long question just message me.

  • I gave you thumbs up.

  • the tank looks awsome, i love all the plants, i wish i could have live plants in mine, anyways looks great.

  • very nice my man, thanks for posting
