  • you are a brilliant fucking player. very nice work.

  • sounds like Echo Song or Buckethead's Big Sur Moon. very nicely done

  • flash-riffick

I like the Vanhalen type stuff

  • 2:43-2:46 wtf was that...this was epic.....

  • Your amazing, did you place as a finalist in your GC??!?!?

  • Yeah, I was one of 8 national finalists. Cool experience. They flew us to Seattle. We met Steve Vai, Reeves Gabrels, Blues Saraceno! Not to mention we each got about $5000 worth of music equipment for winning the regional competitions. Guitarmageddon 2001 was good to me. I hear things are different now. They play to backing tracks and they call it something else now. Sounds kinda lame if you ask me. I dunno.

  • And this was in 2001, daym, you're awesome dude.

  • Damn! That's rad! I play guitar myself and I got something for you too buddy! lol

  • Thanks, Bro. Keep on playin'

  • OMG my name is matt baker too. That is so totally weird! =]

  • dude my name is matt baker :O could it be me lol

  • Hey Fellow Matt Baker! It could be you if you practice long enough! ha ha Thanks for watching.

  • holy shit O_O that was awesome

  • your song is so clean and you have pants!!

    congratulations!! |o|

  • red: "jesus baker, you spend more time on your back than Paddock's sister!"

    paddock: "fuck you red!"

  • thats the guy from brothers in arms

  • From One Matt Baker to another Matt Baker!

    YOU ROCK BAKE!

Was curious, are you like the rest of my family with the last name BAKER! BEING CALLED * BAKE *?

  • I've been called 'bake' by Stormy, the bass player in Roger's band. I've been called 'shake -n- bake' by my old football coach from Junior High/Highschool ha ha

  • Matt Baker. Hey i just want to wish you the best of luck in your job. Its been a few years sence iv seen roger and you play I think the last time i saw yall play was at the excecutive surf club in corpus christi texas. Thats also when Jason swindol was on the fiddle. I remember that well because jason played the fiddle for daryl dodd in that song " one more ride to vega's" Good times

  • Thanks, dude. It's been 13 months since I've left the band and I've landed on my feet. Since then, I've moved to Houston, bought a house, got a great job, and traveled internationally. I'm a happy camper these days. There are some times when I wish I had a gig, but I realize I don't have the time anymore. I used to be able to work our at Gold's Gym 5 days a week for 2 hours a day! I was getting ripped after 10 months of that. Where does the time go? And we plan on having kids!! bracing myself

  • Matt, where did you go? You were working at R&R few months back and left. I was the old guy playing guitar at company birthday party.

I play mostly country but you play it all and shred that thing. You in a band now?

  • Sorry, Telefunkster! I don't remember you. What company birthday? I was with Roger Creager, but now I took a hiatus from the music biz. I'm in the construction biz now.

  • You worked in Rentsys Sales last year.

You stopped in dining room after work during company birthday party, played some songs on acoustic guitar, gave me your card and I never seen you again.

You have your own construction biz or work for someone here in BCS?

  • I work in Deer Park and live in Humble, TX now. I got a construction job running schedule and cost engineering for industrial projects. My last stint was in Trinidad and Tobago. Now I'm building a wet gas scrubber in Louisiana. This is a piece of refinery equipment.

  • a shame this will never happen again, now that it's KOB.. fuckin KOB. I guess blues is kind of neglected nowadays

  • Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, I guess they got tired of all of the terrible wankers out there and decided to change it up. The format will be different in a few years. I remember trying out at the Guitar Center Limp Bizkit audition in Austin. There was a big sign over the door saying "No Guitar Solos allowed" They didn't care about anything but looks and basic ability to play rhythm guitar. All good things must come to an end.

  • hah limp bizkit.. does that mean you have to be bald?

the modern lead guitarist will be forever hidden in a recording booth

  • he keeps hitting the e power chord...

    but he's good.

  • Thanks. I love power chords! The E5 is definitely one of my favs!

  • i don't think devastator meant the e5 as a compliment...

you keep ending everything with it and it sounds annoying

  • wow... you're so cool insulting people on you tube. FYI no one asked for your opinion anyway! Anyone could look at this clip and see that he has an amazing talent. Keep your petty comments to yourself.

  • don't flatter yourself whatever your name is...

this guitarist is hardly a talent...

  • Thanks, Dude! I like your clips as well!

  • Way tew go Matt! The echoe thing is fun...great shreddin! Cheers.

  • hey, in the beggining he plays that song from the movie crossroads! good stuff. i like the delay in it. it makes everything sound more complicated =P

  • Yeah, that's the trick...playing licks that sound 3 times harder than they actually are! Crossroads was a great movie. They need to redo that film with modern actors if they promise not to goof it up. They'd probably butcher it. They would cast Tom Hanks to play 'Eugene' and Denzel Washington to play Willie Brown.

  • yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa yaeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayayayyayaaaeeeeeeayayyyaya is atomic speed, live!!!!

  • Pinkertoy2002... Matt Baker is one of the best (top 5) guitar players in texas! This video just proves the many different styles this guy can do... rather it be malmsteen to james burton he is very well versed and plays with more feeling than most, so easy on the critisism.

  • The Nuno / Malmsteen feel is good but you also need to try and keep it sounding origanal and play a slower piece to give a change of mood and feeling . Over all well done guitar hero lol

  • Thanks for watchin the clip.

  • I entered this contest in West Palm Beach in 2004. I played over kind of a country shred thing and finished with a classical Paganini thing (original piece). I Did pretty well till the store finals with the celeb judges. Mine was a little too much as far as a country shred thing??? What was I thinking..LOL!

I like your solo! Very well arranged. Nuno/Malmsteen! Very cool! Add a little echo etude in it, be bad ass!

  • Thanks fellow guitar slinger! Keep checkin out my clips. I plan to put a lot more up here in the next several months. Take care and keep on playin'!

  • Pretty damn awesome man!

  • Same matt baker who played for roger creager?

  • Yeah, It's me.

  • Ha, I know Matt. He had a waitress at Bonedaddy's talking to him about Iced Earth or something when we went...and I was high as hell!

Chow

  • Is this the same Matt Baker that grew up in socal?

  • No, I've lived in TX almost all of my life. Matt Baker is a common name. Thanks for watching.

  • was the movie crossroads out by then ..your opening solo is almost note for the note the solo the karate kid plays o.o

  • yeah, it had been out for 15 years. That's an old fav of mine. Yeah I used the opening lines to that solo. No one ever said I had to be original. ha ha

  • wicked.

  • Man you are great! awesome technique, do you went to the finals? and how is that of hang out with steve vai blues saraceno and reeves gabrels, i mean you could jam with them or something like that?

    Greetings from Chile, S.

  • Thanks, man. It was cool to hang out with Steve Vai and Blues Saraceno. We were all staying at the same hotel. I chatted with them a bit in the lobby the day after. Nice guys. Their performances were cool. You should find a way to get to Seattle to see EMP, the hendrix museum. It is bad to the bone! They have a webpage I'm sure. Make a mini vacation out of it. Go see the space needle and take a float plane over to Canada and check that out too.

  • Great performance as well as great guitar playing, your a real talent. Great job man.

  • Thank you. I appreciate that. I need to get some updated clips on you tube. I've learned quite a bit since 2001. I plan to record some piano and acoustic guitar stuff that will make cool clips. Take care

  • Cool delay/picking at the begining. Very fluent soloing. I like the tapped "over-under" technique. (a variation of Michael Angelo who picks when he does it)

  • Thanks, bro. It was fun at the time and I really had a blast doing the shred thing. There's never a shortage of things to learn. Michael Angelo has some cool techniques and is amazingly ambidextrious on the guitar. I can barely play smoke on the water left handed! ha ha

  • aver-nice, I like

  • You're right. I checked up on that. He's one of my favorite tele pickers. That's pretty cool.

  • Yawn - been done a million times over the past twenty years by over a million players...

  • That's true. But it did win me 5000 dollars in music gear and an all expenses paid trip to Seattle! I appreciate your input, though. I get tired of people telling me 'dude, you rock' all the time. Thanks for your honesty! ha ha

  • Hi Matt.

    -Tim

  • Hey Tim! Like your pen videos! I wish I could do that. I've tried some of those moves and the pen winds up across the room somewhere! - Matt

  • was that intro a play on beethoven's 3rd movement of moonlight sonata?

  • Nah, I wish I was that creative back then. ha ha I ripped that intro off of this old movie "Cross Roads" with Ralph Machio (Karate Kid) It's a good movie. He plays the same intro on a tele without delay and then starts playing the lick from Paganini's 5th caprice. Actually Steve Vai plays all the guitar parts in the movie except for the bluesy slide work (Ry Cooder). They do a pretty good job of making Karate Kid look like a badass guitar player.

  • sweet! i think i hear some symphony x damnation game licks in there

  • Guitarmageddon

  • YEA! Baker, doing his thing. You are lookin sharp man.

  • if he is like this playing on public, inmagine how he is when playing all alone!

  • I was goin to say the same thing ... great technique

  • How old is this guy? 30-40's?

  • hah. i totally recognized the crossroads arpeggios at around 1:00. nice playing.

  • Still, Amazing. Regardless of Diminished G-E sweep things. I really like the reverb upscales at about 40 seconds.

  • Thanks, Gio. Good to hear from you. Hey everybody! Search for "Gio" "Guitarmageddon" and check out his solo. Pretty awesome.

  • That's hot son. It's good to find you up here man. That was totally amazing. Great time we had that night. Keep rocking son. Keep rockin. Gerardo "Gio" Williams

  • Wow man. You are killer! I loved watching this video.

  • Thanks for watching. I need to put something new up here soon. I've learned a lot since then.

  • how the hell do you do that part at 1:57, is it a diminished scale sweep thing?

  • Hey, thanks for watching and it's a legato diminished string skipping thing. You just pick a spot on the G string and hammer up in minor 3rds (every 3 frets), then you skip the B string and ascend up the E string the same way. Then come back down in reverse order using pull-offs. You can do the phrase chromatically like I did by shifting 1 fret up or down. If you want to go Zelda on them, shift the whole phrase up the neck in minor 3rd intervals. Have fun with it!

    Matt

  • Matt is amazing, and to think thats 2001. You should hear how he sounds nowadays.
